Is the IDF held to a higher moral standard?

Today’s armies are subject to international humanitarian law, national pressure and public scrutiny. Yet they must also uphold themselves to their own specific ethical and moral codes.
For decades, Israel’s military, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), has fought for the state’s very existence. Over time, many of Israel’s enemies have moved beyond the traditional battlefield and brokered for peace…or political warfare.
Enemies like Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah have tested the IDF’s morality by using unethical tactics beyond the accepted principles of warfare, putting innocent human lives at risk. Until Israel’s enemies hold themselves to a higher moral code, the IDF will remain prepared and armed to defend Israel from constant threat while striving to maintain its own ethical code.

"Never judge a person till you get to be in his place" As a person who visited Israel for few times it seems that Israel has more tolerance and restraint than is usually attributed to. I bet that most of the countries today would be acting harshly against the terrorism with no mercy and care to civilian life buildings etc... I bet even the most moral/ humanian nation would expel the civilian executing the enemies and the agents of the terrorist organizations, instead of risking their own soldiers life to capture a terrorist avoiding collateral damage and eventually after a prosecution and a few years of jail he would be released with education and be welcome as a hero for his people since he has managed to stub to death pregnant woman and a few more innocent people and even children too. This reality isn't acceptable to live with every day.

The IDF purposely has put their own soldiers at risk in order to avoid civilian casualties. The Lebanese war was a prime example of what happens when the IDF takes that overboard and it leads to an unnecessary amount of their own dying whilst not succeeding fully in their mission. The IDF is the only army in the world to drop leaflets, to make phone calls, send SMS to civilians and give sufficient amount of time for them to evacuate. It's hard to get it right 100% of the time when you're dealing with savages like Hamas, Hezbollah and the PLO who have no regard for human life and use their own people as human shields. In many instances these are young 20 year old men having to make split second decisions when encountering Muslim terrorists shooting at them and trying to kill them. So whilst anti-Israel zealots sit comfortably on their thrones in their western countries, Israel has to deal with the fact that they are surrounded by countries and groups who want to wipe them off the face of the earth and murder Jews indiscriminately. The problem for Israel is a PR one. They've become so much better at defending themselves in the last 20 years that the younger generation in the West didn't grow up or live in the times when Israel dealt with suicide bombings and terror on a weekly basis for the longest time. I moved from Israel when I was 5 years old. I personally witnessed 2 suicide bombings as a 3 year old, one where my parents and I missed a bus by a few seconds, only to watch it blow up 30 seconds later. My older sister had classmates who lost siblings in the dolphinarium discotheque massacre. Israel was constantly under attack. We should not apologize for defending ourselves against subhuman savages. More Palestinians died in the infighting between Hamas and Fatah than by IDF operation.

One of the first things Joe Biden authorized as US president was a drone strike in Afghanistan that killed 12 civilians because the US misidentified their target. Of course Rashida Tlaib, AOC and Bernier Sanders weren't this outraged. The fact that France and Germany have swaths of armed guards and military presence in their airports is hilarious because they criticize Israel for taking the same measures to defend themselves against terror. Morals are rules for life, and the first imperative is "Survive". If someone is trying to kill you, it is essential to kill them before they succeed. If anything, the IDF errs too far on the side of caution for its own good. Decent people don't want to have to kill children, or do other unpleasant things. One of the unfortunate conseuences of war is that survivors will be haunted by memories of necessary acts and collateral damage. Golda Meir said "we can forgive the Arabs for killing our children, but not for forcing us to kill theirs". If your enemy sends children with suicide vests towards you, what option is there but to kill them before they're in blast range? The odd psychopath may get enlisted and take the opportunity to abuse enemies, but a dsciplined force will prevent or punish that. (Some Arab apologists accuse the IDF or racism, because IDF soldiers don't rape Arab women,) It's an odd fact that people whose idea of a day's fun is throwing Molotov cocktails and dancing on police cars suddenly come over all law-abiding when it comes to "International Law". , (Which is mostly a matter of agreements rather than real laws). Thet flingi all sorts of accusations of war crimes at Israel. Units have lawyers attached and monitoring all their actions, which can't make for tactical flexibility.

Considering the Palestinians routinely send their kids to throw rocks at IDF soldiers and try to bait them into retaliation while they film the interactions or the fact they spend foreign aid money on buying weapons, building tunnels or on themselves by hiding it in Qatar or the fact they send teenagers to the front lines to "protest" to use them as human shields so that they could shoot at the soldiers and bait them into shooting civilians just shows Israel is dealing with subhumans. It's like trying to argue with an idiot, it's impossible to be 100% successful in preventing collateral damage when your enemy doesn't give a $hit about its own people.

Palestine is not Afghanistan or Vietnam in the manner that their actions are observed heavily with scrutiny. With a lack of attention toward the other side of the conflict, soldiers are able to act on their grievances as long as the situation is covered. In Palestine however, any single incident can be used by Hamas to perceive Israel as an aggressor no matter the context. What the IDF soldiers suffered is not that different from what Afghan or Vietnam vets are portrayed in international media lots of time. The difference is that IDF is there to defend their nation and is loved by the people Again, this only serves to show that the situation Israel is in is not tenable and must be addressed and spoken about in a larger context on the nature of the conflict itself. Israel is not in the wrong in defending their people, certainly, but they're not that fortunate that they can convince the world they're on a higher moral ground. Hamas is the powder keg, Israel is the gasoline and IDF is the match. That is the relationship that it has become.

While it can actually refer to a large number of different deities, Baal in this case refers to Hadad, the Canaanite and Syrian god of rain, fertility, life, agriculture and thunder, particularly popular in Ugarit and Aleppo. He was at least in part derived from the Sumerian god Ishkur, but their character differed substantially; while Ishkur represented the destructive power of storms, the western Semitic Baal was the master of life-giving rains vital for farmers. Thanks to his huge influence, Baal was designated as the universal god of fertility, and in that capacity his title was Prince, Lord of the Earth. He was also called the Lord of Rain and Dew, the two forms of moisture that were indispensable for fertile soil in Canaan In Ugaritic and Hebrew, Baal's epithet as the storm god was He Who Rides on the Clouds. In the Baal (Lord) Cycle he's frequently called "Aliyan Baal" or "Baal, the victorious." In Phoenicia, he was called Baal Shamen, Lord of the Heavens. In Syria, hail was seen as a phenomenon closely related to him. He was also the king of the gods, and, to achieve that position, he was portrayed as seizing the divine kingship from Yam, the sea god, described as a tyrannical ruler. Baal was probably also regarded as the source of royal authority for human kings, and myths and prayers depict him as an ally and protector of humans. In his main myth, the so-called Baal Cycle, Baal was locked in mortal combat with Mot, the personification of death and sterility. If Baal triumphed, humanity would thrive; but, if he were to be vanquished by Mot, humans would suffer and their crops would wither away. While the myths present a decisive conclusion to the conflict, some scholars assume it was believed to repeat in cycles. Like many deities of the ancient Near East, Hadad was always represented in a horned headdress. In art, he's often shown holding a club and thunderbolt or two clubs. While Mesopotamian depictions of the storm god and the famous Baal stele depict him as a typical bearded Near Eastern god, many Canaanite depictions are instead more similar to Egyptian warriror gods and beardless. Baal was also frequently associated with bulls. The bull was a widespread symbol of divinity in ancient Mespopotamia and areas infuenced by it. Other storm gods from cultures closely related to that of ancient Canaan, like Hurrian Teshub and Hittite Tarhunna, were depicted very similarly to Baal in art, and their myths shared many similarities as well. The Egyptian god Set in his generally positive aspect as a god of foreigners was also associated with Baal, taking his role in the Egyptian adaptation of the Yam narrative. Baal is usually associated with the goddesses Ashtart (commonly called "the Face of Baal," indicating particularly close bond between these two deities), a western Semitic equivalent of Ishtar, and Anat, both of who are often interpreted as his consorts. Anat is also called Baal's sister, though it's unclear if they share the exact same parents, as in Ugaritic texts Baal calls two separate gods, El (the husband of Asherah) and Dagan, his fathers. Whether the two fathers were one and the same or if one of these was simply a courtesy title indicating superior status is a matter of scholarly debate, though cultic rather than mythical texts regard Dagan as separate from El. The name Baal, or Ba'al, is used as a substitute of Hadad in some ancient texts and in common modern usage. This is possibly derived from the fact that in ancient Canaan only priests were allowed to utter the divine name, in much the same way as in Judaism where only priests were allowed to utter the name of God, so common people simply referred to him as Baal. It's also possible the title was eventually deemed to be integral to Hadad's cult it functionally became his main name. The word ba'al and its plural form were also used in the Hebrew Bible to refer to cult images, and in this context they were regarded as false gods. Because of this, several demons were derived from Baal, including Bael and Beelzebub. Many of the most famous biblical references to Baal, for example the tale of Jezebel, are related to the traditions of the cities of Sidon and Tyre, where the title of Baal was applied to deities other than Hadad. 😇

The Jewish tradition of Passover may have begun as a ritual connected with the myth of Mot killing Baal (Hadad). Passover is held at the end of the rainy season, which could symbolize the death of Baal, as he was the god of rain. In the myth, Mot eats Baal like a lamb. During Passover, the priests eat lamb. However, the bones of the lamb are not broken, possibly signifying that Baal will return in the fall. During the festival, the priests prepare the body of the lamb in a similar fashion as Anat kills Mot. The festival may have started with the belief that by participating in the death of Baal, they would insure that rains would not come during the spring, as rain in the spring could ruin the crops. A few references in the Bible also appear to be a memory of Mot, such as vague mentions of seemingly personified death in the books of Hosea, Habakkuk and Jeremiah.

Hamas thinks they’re right by killing jews because they think that we have stolen their land. Some Israelis think it’s right to kill Palestinians because this is our territory. To decide who is right and who is moral, is easy. You just have to pick sides which means that there is no objective morality here. It doesn’t mean war in this case is bad, it just means that morality in this case is irrelevant. This is a matter of survival and morality should be thrown out the window if we want to survive.

The point of being in an army is to defend your country and kill the enemy. There is nothing criminal or saintly about it. It is simply the brutal reality of warfare. Kill or be killed. War is never nice or clean. Morality and human rights of the other never played a major factor in almost all wars historically. Conquered cities were fully decimated in the ancient times. Whether these people were innocent civilians or not did not matter one iota to the victor. The victor asserted his dominance and supremacy over the defeated that way. Nowadays we view this as immoral and barbaric but historically it was never seen as such. Human values have changed with time. As societies become more peaceful these things are looked upon with severe disdain. But when society goes in the other direction then these same morals will change accordingly and will probably allow more leniency for violent treatment of whatever or whoever is perceived to be the enemy.

As for today, the lands the Palestinians claim they're kicked out from in East Jerusalem belong to Jews who were forcibly expelled by the Jordanians in 1948. Jews were a majority in Jerusalem always, Jordan kicked out thousands of Jews from their homes and evicted them. When Israel regained East Jerusalem, those families asked to be given their homes back. The Israeli superior court ruled in 1982 that the Palestinians who now occupied those homes could stay there as long as they pay rent. They haven't paid a cent in rent and hence those families went back to court to try to reclaim the land they owned. Other land in East Jerusalem belongs to the Greek Orthodox Church and they're willingly selling it to Jewish groups. "Mourners" it's a typical Palestinian stunt. This scenario has played out thousands of times before where Palestinians terrorists exploit funerals to attack Israeli soldiers. It's a stunt, to draw the IDF to engage. Same thing that led to Shireen's unfortunate death. Palestinian terrorists started firing in a crowd first against the IDF and she was caught up in a middle of a gun fight the Palestinians started. If the Palestinians were so sure that the IDF killed her, they would have no problem allowing Israel investigate the bullet so that they could match it to the soldier. Abbas refused.

@@MartinMartinm Again, woman, LGBTQ people, men all serve in the IDF (meaning IDF doesn’t discriminate woman or LBGTQ people), they all also have the same rights in Israel, all of them go to colleges, wear what they want to wear, love and marry a person of their choice. And yes, for all of them it is a mandatory to serve their tiny country Israel, some of them choose to serve in hospitals (and choose not to join IDF), some in technological units of IDF, all of them solders and not solders help to protect all citizens of Israel (Israeli arabs including) from the Islamic terror, they fight and win wars.
