A Greek Corporation You have two cows borrowed from French and German banks. You eat both of them. The banks call to collect their milk, but you cannot deliver, so you call the IMF. The IMF loans you two cows. You eat both of them. The banks and the IMF call to collect their cows and milk. You are out getting a haircut.

when you have to ask the IMF for help means you have completely mismanaged your economy. you should be looking at yourself instead of pushing blame.

Exactly ! Boo boo, IMF force us to make tough decision. They don't force you to do anything, just they kindly give you money in exchange for structural change. Don't want to do the change ? Don't take the money.

Correct, but IMF passes the image, using your own words, of being good managers of economy, so you failed, you request money for experts and if results don't appear, you are right to blame!
@dorianodet8064
@dorianodet8064 2 ай бұрын
@@FallenLegend Said result won't happen overnight. And everytime it's always the same : Economy is failing. Governement is using debt and subsidies to keep people lifestyle higher until it blow up in unsustainable debt. IMF ask the governement to stop taking on debt, to stop unsustainable subsidies and to fix the economy. Of course there is a 5-10 years period where this will be hard, but this would've been hard without the IMF when the country goes bankrupt and can't borrow anymore money anyways
@FallenLegend

@@dorianodet8064Maybe... I don't know if you are saying becasue you know of a situation or example, or u think you know, based on your point of perspective. Remember that we live in an age of misinformation. What i do know, I'm portuguese and Portugal requested help to IMF. IMF refused to give money to Portugal so the goverment pays its debts to private, small and medium service providers to the state. Those companies went bankrupt and cripled the economy. Not the key point, but an obvious point i can say so i pass this view. Also, when the goverment recieved the program of IMF on what to do, several people complained that what IMF wasnt tested or showcased proof or evidence that if actions went throught, results appeared. Portugal was in some cases, a guinea pig for a macroeconomics lab...

IMF's bad reputation is well-deserved. Shock therapy is a terrible economic idea that has failed everywhere it has been tried. It destroys a large chunk of complex, high value added productive economic activity, usually permanently. Without that, no country has a chance to compete in the global markets and grow, so they end up as a permanent basket case. Many decades ago one could argue, however weakly, that the IMF didn't understand the full extent of what they were doing. This is no longer tenable. The fact is, while the IMF itself is not there to turn a profit, they do turn a massive profit for the countries controlling its policies, just in a different place. That high added value production, guess where it goes? The internal markets that were cleared of local competition in this way are forced open and US companies (or companies US benefits from through private equity funds etc) take their place. Th IMF's "successes", such as South Korea, are not really their successes - South Korea benefited from the US using them to dump semiconductor manufacturing they ripped out of Japan, in a previous round of "tank the economy that threatens to overtake us" that they're currently attempting with China. S. Korea does deserve credit for being competent and taking advantage of the situation, but it's certainly far from a success story for the IMF.

The IMF was designed to support and develop the global economy after WWII when most of the world's nations had gone bust. Unfortunately, nowadays it has become more hindrance than help by preventing the natural economic and social revolutions that see countries turn themselves around.

If those countries needed the help of the IMF it means their political class have no accountability so : they are very good at miss managing, they have very poor credit ratings, very likely to default because they have no one to answer to after their mandate is finished and the reforms the FMI demands limits how much they can drain out from the economy

If poor countries do not want to borrow money from the IMF and then pay it back following the agreement they signed to get the loan, then do not borrow money from the IMF in the first place. Live within your means and do not try to emulate the developed countries if you are a poor, underdeveloped country. Just like sensible folks in developed countries do not take out large bank loans they cannot afford to repay to buy luxury goods so they can keep up with the Jones next door.
@jaytanatswamuzhingi971

You actually have it wrong. One if the reasons why deveped countries are so developed is their ability to get large amounts of debts to finance development. In the us debt to gdp is 120%. Whereas a poor country struggling to develop and requiring bailout like Pakistan is 77%. Developed countries are definitely not living within their means. They are just not being bothered by the debt collector.
