I read Watchmen the first time years ago (in the year 2010) and I was blown away. In my opinion it is hands down the best comic ever made, when it comes down to plot structure, parallelized themes, deeply fleshed out characters and of course the sugar at the bottom is the original ending, which I'm not going to spoil here. On top the numerous accolades it has received, the Time magazine has included it on their list of "the 100 best novels from 1923 to 2005", being the sole comic on that list.
@IwanAWESOMEstuff7 жыл бұрын
I feel that Logan is much, much better than the original Old Man Logan. I feel that its grounded story, amazing scenes and brilliant character development make it shine and run paces ahead of the original comic it is loosely based on. I just feel that Old Man Logan is too over the top, too comic book-y and too short to really tell what should be a grounded character study, and James Mangold did this through Logan by just taking a few element of the original comic (Logan is old, based in a apocalyptic-like time, gives plenty of bloody violence) and while also giving time for characters to develop properly. I also like the father/daughter story between Logan and Laura, but to be fair, all my favourite stories are parent/child stories - I just feel they are the perfect type of stories to study both character and humanity and I love it. For me, Old Man Logan is a 7/10, but Logan is a solid 10!

In my opinion, Watchman is very much a 'thinking man's' film. First watched it when I was like 11 and liked the prison fight scene but that was about it. As I got older and actually started to appreciate the subtlety of the film and it's message it became my favourite comic book film. The Night owl and Rorschache dynamic was portrayed excellently, and Rorschach's death was emotional af. And also the prison fight scene still kicks ass.
@cmaprice7 жыл бұрын
What I did like about the movie's ending versus the book isn't that it's more "realistic," but that it creates more meaning and better stakes for Doctor Manhattan. It's almost like the end of The Dark Knight, like his gift to humanity is becoming the boogeyman. It also makes even more sense out of his disrupted perception of time; the explosions were directly involved, and were in essence a part of him.

I'm disappointed with this video. It wasn't a breakdown between mediums, it was just "I like that one more too bad." People have to understand the change in medium and how different it can affect the end product. The film is an adaptation of the comic, but it doesn't outright reference/subvert other comics, because it isn't a comic, it's a film. What Snyder's Watchmen does is reference OTHER FILMS. Saying "I like comic books" as a replacement for any kind of answer is mistake #1. James even referenced "the nipples" and no one stopped to think "maybe that has something to do with Joel Schumacher's Batman films?" That's mistake number 2. What to do: watch Watchmen again and look for the attacks/criticisms/references the film makes about OTHER FILMS. How the bomb is a traditional use of Bond villains, how suit nipples were donned by Batman first, how slow motion could actually show a cinematic way of turning pages, how violence is common until the bright blue, clean explosion at the end (which should have been laden with blood and guts but wasn't" etc. Thanks lads

The big change made in "Watchmen" (replacing the fake aliens with Doctor Manhattan) is a good change. The aliens hoax was a weakness in the graphic novel because it sort of appears out of left field without being properly set up. In terms of narrative flow, that would have involved scenes showing the setup before it happens. By contrast, making Manhattan a scapegoat works perfectly because now his existing storyline also serves to establish the veracity of Oxymandias' plot. It was a brilliant change that improved the story by making it structurally much tighter.

Do you realize the comedian refers to it really early in his monologue to moloch? And that the characters where wondering what this island with artists he was talking about was for a while? For Watchmen, I'm divided. I felt many things worked better in the novel, but there was stuff that I thought worked better in the movie. For me, for instance, counter to what you guys said, the Squid thing was just... no, dumb as all hell. It felt totally out of place in that story, and even cursory thinking on it says it wouldn't have worked anyway. For starters this plot has very conveniently out of nowhere introduced psionics that make no appearance anywhere else in the story in the slightest. Then they someone manage to move this absolutely massive creature (and develop it too) without anyone being the wiser that something is up. That's probably the easiest gimme, but then they teleport it into NY, first time for that tech too although at least that is somewhat grounded in the story unlike psionics. Then for odd reasons is the first time it uses its ability and kills everyone and itself. And then you just know scientist will be looking into this thing deeply, and ultimately will likely find out it is a fake quite quickly. And why exactly Russia care? This would seem like a perfect time to make a move when your chief enemy's main gun is out of commission and they are distracted with an attack of unknown origin. Yeah, no, too many gimmes. The movie ending by contrast makes much more sense. Manhattan effectively gave Oz the tech necessary. The attacks hit all over the globe ensuring everyone must take them seriously. Scientists examining the attacks will just conclude exactly what Oz wants that it is Manhattan's power. The huge beast is gone, replaced with a relatively tiny bomb, much easier to keep secret, build and move. There is no need for some power that is never otherwise shown. Since it is grounded in Manhattan's power, that it teleports based in Manhattan's teleportation is easy to give. This just works so much better in the world that was created. That all said, that is but one element and other elements I felt were better in the novel. Can't really speak to V although I do like the movie, but without being familiar with the novel for it, can't give a good comparison.
@byronhorde58927 жыл бұрын
Personally, I don't compare what is written on the page with the adaptation that is shown on the screen. In my opinion, it makes no sense to do so. It is, basically, like comparing an apple to an orange. Considering that what is shown on the screen does not have to be the same as what was written on the page, I choose to take each under their own merit. That, of course, includes films based from novels.

I don't think it's a bad representation of the comic, but it doesn't really adapt to film very well. There are some bothersome things about it, but its casted well and visually it looks good. It makes good gifs, I guess.

The Watchmen in its original incarnation simply featured too much material to pack into a 3 hour film and as a result too many element of key importance to the plot were eliminated culminating in a feature that feels rushed and contrived. -The Black Freighter side story is integral to the plot. It needed to be included in the film and not released afterward as supplemental material. -The treatment of Ozymandias was completely wrong. The character lacked sufficient development to establish him as the imposing figure he represents and the casting was dreadful. Sometimes a story is only as good as its villains and this movie villain just seemed like more of an annoyance than the world's smartest man. -The entire plot of Ozymandias developing a genetically created monster, and his subsequent inability to develop teleportation technology that doesn't create a catastrophic explosion being completely written out in favor of creating a nuclear explosion and then blaming Dr. Manhattan for it, well that's just lazy writing. Zack Snyder with this film proved once again that he is only good at making stylish looking cinema with little actual substance... eye candy and little else. The Watcmen was best in its initial form and any attempts to expand on it or recreate it are doomed to failure barring the efforts of a truly transcendent, visionary filmmaker. The Watchmen is not a franchise. It is a deconstruction of the superhero genre and any attempts to expand it into live action betrays the message of the original.

I watched the film before the book and it's in my top 10 films of all time, so was excited to read the book, and actually felt like all the bits they cut for the movie made sense. The book wasn't as good as the film for me.

As for V For Vendetta it is a complete and utter masterpiece and is actually my 10th all time favourite movie! Still though the comic once again is better! Alan Moore is just a genius!

Much as I love the over the top silliness of comics, I did feel that the end of Watchmen movie made more sense than the comic... that monster pretty much just comes out of nowhere, whereas in the movie a big sub plot was the harnessing of Dr. Manhattans energy for the world to use freely, only to have Ozzy use it to kill millions. I thought it was a great change.

The movie ending made a lot less sense, why would the other countries care about Manhattan destroying an American city.

I love both. I think the movie is really good, especially the director's cut. It's definitely under appreciated, which sucks. I got obsessed with the film a few years after it was released. So merchandise was harder to find and a lot of people outside the internet don't really care to discuss it.

I actually really loved V for Vendetta and liked Watchmen, but to be fair, I have never read the comics either of them are based on.

The movie adaptation of Kick Ass is infinitely better than the comic, which I hated. Funny thing is, I actually read the comic before the movie came out, so I was like "wow, they made that comic I hated really good"

The only thing the movie does better is the ending, how Dr Manhattan was tricked in a far more interesting way compared to the comics, it's a ending that makes sense, not Moore trolling his audience like he always does. Some people thinks the guy is a underapreciated genius, but in fact Moore is just a good writer who started trends that defined modern comics, he is a crazy old man that sometimes expose his weirdness in his work. And ignorants assumes that eccentric artists are better than the others for whatever reason. But anyway, that was a crackhead ending, as same as the "heroes" in the film breaking bones and catching bullets, all stupid as hell. Watchmen is a incredible story, but it's clear how people over praised this comic just because of the pioneer factor.
