What did you think of this video? Are the different uses of "se" more or less clear now after watching the video?

Nice for grammar nerds! I like that you make it clear that it doesn't really matter if what you're trying to do is just speak.

My daughter's university professor (native Spaniard) told her class...this is hard to explain. My daughter said, "my mom taught us it is a way of passing responsibility off, so you are not to blame...you had no intention of the event happening". His response. "That's it! I have to use that".

I learned (learning) “se” in six use cases, with the “accidental” being one of them. The idea that the “blame” (for burning, breaking, running out of, getting dirty, falling) passes from the person (who manifests only as a pronoun victim) to the thing involved is a way to get your head around the use. And to remember /group the verbs that act this way. I remember watching a video and the guy is talking about some extraordinary ice cream. He goes to taste it and he drops the ice cream off his cone. And he says immediately “se me cayó” with a stricken expression on his face. It was not just an accident. He was victimized by that ice cream! I loved your video explaining that really it is the underlying pronominal verb driving this not a different se construction.

Yes, that's exactly right! It's generally the difference between the pronominal vs non-pronominal of the verb that provides this change in meaning.

This is excellent Andrew! I had for some time been wondering why, in these phrases, the focus was on the "se" when it seemed to me that what was changing, was the use of the personal pronouns. And now you confirmed and clarified that AND made it much easier for me to understand how to use this construction. Muchas gracias desde Nueva Zelanda cobber!

Gracias por tus vídeos, los disfruto mucho, y puedo entender muy fácilmente. Just a comment regarding the 2nd person plural which is very common in Spain, but possibly less so in America (N or S). Could you please introduce the “vosotros” form for us? Por ejemplo “os veis mañana” no solo “nos vemos mañana”, o “se ven pronto”. Soy inglés pero vivo en España después hace cinco años, y más común aquí son “tu” y “vosotros”. Una vez más, gracias y espero tus próximas lecciones, Mark

Super helpful video. Thanks for posting. I just have one quick question. One of the translations you mentioned for I forgot the bread was "Me olvidé del pan". For this sentence, why is del used and not el?
@realfastspanish
@realfastspanish 5 ай бұрын
It can help to think about the version with "me olvidé de..." as "I forgot about...". We also often need prepositions when we are working with pronominal forms.

Thanks for this video again! Another one that I've searched the internet and even AI for is "trata de" versus "se trata de". I can't decide when to use which one when something is "about" something else. The internet and even ChatGPT are giving me conflicting answers, then I go to SpanishDict and look up the differences between tratar and tratarse and the definitions are like "to be about" "to treat" "to deal with". Now I'm intimidated to even try to understand anything about "Tratar" haha.🙄

I am a detail person and find it easier and more enjoyable to learn if I understand the details. Though, I have to say that it has not been an easy road for me and I am not yet fluent. So, maybe your way of skimming could be better. Still, it’s been a long time since I have studied Spanish in detail, and this was a very good refresher on “se”. I have not watched the other video, yet, and I may have been wondering about this. 😂 I appreciate it.

Is it called "dativo de interés"?
@Raferga
@Raferga 4 ай бұрын
The "accidental SE"? No. Dativos de interés may be all the regular pronouns (me/te/se/nos/os/se). It appears in the very first sentece Andrew sets as an example: "Se me cayó ..." In this case, "me" refers to the person the action affects; the person whose "interest" is involved in the action -if this makes any sense - hence the name. There are funny examples of "dativos de interés" that could be surprising for the Spanish students such as: "Mi niño no me come", which could mean "my baby does not eat me" or "my baby does not eat (well) (subtext to translate Spanish "me": and that affects "me"). We'll discard the first interpretation as cases of cannibalism are rare especially amongst tender infants. Sorry, Cannot think now of a case of "SE" as dativo de interés. Hope it helps.

Not trying to nitpick, just want to understand for my own sake. Isn't soltar "to drop"? Or is that just "to let go of/release" and doesn't imply the object actually falls? Or something else entirely?
@realfastspanish
@realfastspanish 5 ай бұрын
Yes, you're right! "Soltar" has the meaning of "to release" or "to let go", so it could mean that something is falling to the ground but it could also mean "releasing" or "letting go" of something by leaving it in its current position. (e.g. to let go of the chair = soltar la silla)
