Tonjiru 豚汁 is a hearty Japanese soup made primarily with pork and vegetables. This Japanese style ABC soup typically contains thinly sliced pork belly or pork shoulder, along with ingredients like daikon radish, carrots, and potatoes. The soup is flavoured with white miso paste, giving it a rich and savoury taste. Tonjiru is often enjoyed as a comforting and nourishing meal, especially during colder months, and it's commonly served alongside steamed rice. Try cooking it at home and let us know what you think. Happy cooking!

Hi, thanks for introducing this soup:) i would like to clarify the referral of "gobo" (see 4:07) as huai shan. To my knowledge, gobo is actually another plant, also known as burdock or niu2 bang4(牛蒡), and is brownish in colour. The japanese name for huai shan is nagaimo. 😊

I had to look up "gobo" as I have never heard of it before. We have burdock in the states. The leaves are quite large, and the roots are taproots, in that it basically is a single long root that is difficult to extract from a regular field without breaking, although I suppose it is easier to harvest when it is actually farmed. It is edible. I wonder how different my wild burdock, which grows all over my pastures, is from that sold in Asian groceries. A few times I saw burdock root in a specialty grocery here and it looked exactly like the weed on my farm. Great cooking lesson as usual, thank you! ETA: I just thought...parsnip might be an interesting substitute. It is like a carrot but with a stronger flavor.
