Love watching you guys and the genuine personalities and honesty makes these videos more enjoyable. I ALSO love seeing small screw ups for it is showing that real life isn't slick as a Hollywood movie and just laughed out loud at the approaching storm and a new type of vehicle "Wrap" installed on the Hummer.. Brilliant as always lads..

I had a Hummer 2004 H2 in 2004, then when that lease was up I got a 2006 Hummer H3, that was the first year of the H3's..I had the H3 for 4 years I never had an issue with the springs.. A month ago I went out and got a 2007 H3 again, since I really dig the vehicle.. THAT vehicle you were working on has some serious rust.. Guess it is a Canadian issue.. Mine has very little rust, it is 14 years old and has no rust on the springs except for some surface rust.. Eventually I will replace the springs when I get back there to service the shocks and do the brakes, hubs, ect.. I am going to do a complete I guess you would call it restoration over the next year, but it is in great shape as it is.. But I want to keep the vehicle for many years to come.. It has a 128000 miles.. Runs great, looks great and was a 1-owner.. and IMHO any vehicle can be a death trap.. Have a Hub go at hwy speed because you are not paying attention to the hub noise.. seen that a few years back.. I am in Transportation, been in this industry for 45 years.. Seen vehicles burst into flames going down the road because of a gas-line breaking and spraying gas all over the engine.. If one does not keep up with maintaining their ride, it can kill them.. Cheers..

I was mostly focusing on a poor design flaw. We actually replaced 2 more broken main leaves this week in the shop, all where broken the same way. The Hummer H3 was the only one that came apart like that simply because of the shape of the front spring eye. We believe the spring eye broke on the H3 because of rust buildup around the bushing which caused the eye to snap. thanks for watching =)

You are right. Any vehicle can become a death trap. A lot of it stems from the owner negligence. Hear an unusual noise ? Turn the radio up. Problem solved. I'm a professional technician.. I see this all the time. Brakes grinding so bad they have ground the rotor down to the cooling fins. Wheel bearings just screaming in agony ,,,,, etc. There is always one common factor when I see a vehicle clearly neglected. That is the owners answer to one simple question. "How long has it been making that noise ?" "It just started yesterday." Quit with the BS. Every customer lies when you ask that question. Why ? I tend to believe it's one of two things. - They are almost embarrassed that they let the vehicle get to that state. - by saying "It just started yesterday" obviously the damage cannot be that bad. And therefore the repair bill won't be very much. I actually had a customer tell me that. I've been in this trade for a long time. More than 30 years. I would like to believe that I have seen it all and heard it all. Nope. Every day comes a new adventure in neglect and stupidity. You have to think, driving an unsafe vehicle on public roads is a potential hazard for you and everyone around you. Can't afford the repair bill ? Take the bus, take an Uber. It's gonna be a hell of a lot cheaper than a lawsuit when someome gets hurt.

Same here...My H3 Alpha was from Lake Tahoe and no rust issues but, Canada seems to love their winter road salt....Why not just use a Saws All on the spring bolt? Using a cutting torch near a gas tank especially a plastic one seems CRAZY!

Being a lifetime Mopar driver, I say you sir are full of crap. U R probably in your 20's and have been driving a whopping 6-8 years so I am SURE you have seen it and know it all....yeah right. For the longest time most Mopars were leaf springs and I owned them all... old and new, big HD 1 ton P/U trucks and small light 6 cylinder Valiants. Old beat up Dodge/Plymouth cop cars. A,B,C,E, M bodies...all leaf springs. Some with 1000 miles and some with 200,000 miles. Never...I say NEVER have I owned or even seen a Mopar car/truck with a broken leaf spring. Torsion bars yes 0ne time but never a leaf spring on a Mopar. You see Chrysler used them for so long they knew how to manufacture them. GM on the other hand was always a coil spring company so they weren't so good at making leaf springs. Lord knows the leaf springs they put on Camaros back in the day were pathetic at best. And boy did I get crap from the GM guys about how shitty Mopar suspensions were with torsion bars and leaf springs back then, which of course they were not. . Fast forward to the present and now I have a new Ram truck with coil springs and the GM guys tell me how shitty the coil spring suspensions are on Ram trucks and leaf springs and torsion bars that suspend late model Chevys are the only way to go....yeah right. Hummers were and are just status junk right out of the box. Never any good u just had to own one to be a status hipster millennial. Everything broke on them and they were hideous to drive/ride in.

@4:55 you tapped on the gas tank skid plate that is held on by 3 13mm screws, it took me less than one minute to drop the skid pan using an impact wrench... probably 3 minutes using a standard ratchet. The point is the gas tank is formed to allow that spring mounting bolt to slide past it, so while it only took you 15 minutes to burn through the spring, bushing & bolt I had the skid plate dropped, the forward spring mount unbolted and the spring removed from it's perch in under 4 minutes.... Just saying for those of us without a torch, it's usually easier to just remove a 3 bolt skid pan that it is to unnecessarily cut away at things. Hope this helps for future jobs 👍

Can the Dutch eye be replaced by a rolled end spring? New subscriber from Regina.
@simcoespring
@simcoespring 2 жыл бұрын
yes, we have actually made new main leaves for these with a "downturned" eye. that eye design is usually used on dodge pickups (and a few others) If you see the eye getting "swollen" from rust, the eye looks very rusted or the bushing is falling apart, or if the vehicle has over 200-250k and you plan on keeping it for a while, it might be wise just to replace the whole spring rather than having custom main leaves made. It will reset the "timer" on the lifetime of the springs and you'll be good to go again for a long while.

@simcoespring
@simcoespring 2 жыл бұрын
The chassis might be similar but the canyon and the Colorado both use a "Berlin" eye in stead of a "dutch eye" and I find that the difference in the eye design makes it so it doesn't let the axle move back like that and if it does, it is Super rare rather than just part of the design.

Your skill with the torch is very impressive. Having the head of the bolt on the tank side is a safety thing. If you install the bolt the other direction, so the nut is on the tank side, you run the risk of a tank puncture via the end of the bolt in a side impact collision. Gas leaks in crashes are bad... Mmmm-k... 🙂 btw, totally jealous of your pit.

One issue I see witch can happen to any vehicle is that truck is constantly exposed to bad weather look at the rust I happened to own A H3 im in California mines looks nothing like that far as rust so if your truck is constantly exposed to snow witch they put salt down on the road have it treated to prevent this.

luckily, you probably will never have an issue like this on your vehicle. Mostly a rust belt issue. Rust builds up around the eyes and splits them in half. Pretty common on almost all vehicle, just some are designed a little different which can make them better or worse.

i guess you missed the whole point of how the eye is designed poorly and when it breaks it ALWAYS slides back out of the hanger and the suspension gets loose and out of align by over 2-3" which can cause you go end up in the ditch or into oncoming traffic if you aren't instantly prepared for it. This is the only vehicle we work on with that design, so yes, i will throw it under the bus for that reason.

Ohhh no, hate to be the one to tell you guys but if you remove the gas tank shield 4 bolts you will see there a access notch in the actual fuel tank so you don’t have to cut the driver side bolt off. I just did this on my H3. 😂😂

Reusing the U-bolts? I’ve never had any I’d trust to reuse here in New England. No room in the budget for new U-bolts, cross bolts and shocks? Would only add 150 bucks or so to the job with huge piece of mind. Just my 2¢.
@simcoespring

Shocks are about 100 a piece here. About 60 for ubolts. Minimum 50 for installing the shocks so now we are at $310. Shocks are expensive here in canada now. Customer walked I to an unexpected tow bill. 2 new springs. Was out around $1200 already. Yah I should have milked him for another 300....or.maybe I don't bilk them out of every cent they have just cus they walk through my shop. Just my 2 cents.

Sure it is the way the spring eye is designed. When they break. They fall out. Other designs just dont have that feature and when the eyes break they usually just stay put.

@@simcoespring I make the argument that using the good old smoke wrench is the most efficient way of doing the job, but not the most elegant. Time is money. The customer would rather pay for few bolts than pay you for 2 or 3 extra hours fighting rust and in this case removing a gas tank. Therefore when you said it is not the most efficient I thought that is inaccurate. If you had said "not the most elegant" I would not have made my comment. Please keep in mind I did the same job for nearly 5 years as a brake and front end mechanic. Brake and Front end mechanic is a misnomer as if a bushing had to be replaced, front or back I did it. Oh yes the good old smoke wrench is dangerous no doubt but I could not have done the job without it as there were not any Saws Alls around in those days. you be careful now and try to not get any melting grease down you collar :)))

How would you have removed that bolt way easier? The gas tank straps and shroud bolts where all swollen and corroded with rust. So that wasn't an option.

@@simcoespring I would have loosened it. Knocked it back a bit and grabbed my limg saw zaw blade and cut it off. No having to deal with heat buy a tank and been done. And if anything was a death trap. It wasn't the springs coming on done it was that rusty ass frame dang. Another year the whole damn frame is gonna do what those springs did.

@Mike-qp8bv
@Mike-qp8bv Жыл бұрын
Having a vehicle "pole vault" with a drive shaft is something your going to see in the movies, not in reality. If the u joint breaks or the yolk comes out of the transmission, that driveshaft will literally beat the hell out of the underside of the vehicle. I've seen brake lines and fuel lines get severed. I've seen driveshafts tear right through the floor sheet metal. That shaft might jab into the ground once the vehicle slows enough but even that is highly unlikely. You gotta think, because it is still connected to the differential that shaft is rotating as the car is still moving. Even if it were to catch something like a pothole, that shaft will either just bend or break before launching that 4000 lb vehicle into the air. Most driveshafts in your average RWD car or truck are around 3/16 steel or aluminum alloy. That's not gonna stand a chance over the vehicles weight. It's pure physics. But I will be skeptical and say has it happened ? Maybe. But it is extremely unlikely.

@@Mike-qp8bv I believe this happened once in oval track racing. Speeds much higher than interstate. Vehicles much lighter than the the typical light truck chassis derived vehicles like the Hummer. I think the racing solution was a U bracket to catch the driveshaft if the forward U-joint failed before it could pierce the asphalt and attempt a rear end pole vault.
