I had a Hummer 2004 H2 in 2004, then when that lease was up I got a 2006 Hummer H3, that was the first year of the H3's..I had the H3 for 4 years I never had an issue with the springs.. A month ago I went out and got a 2007 H3 again, since I really dig the vehicle.. THAT vehicle you were working on has some serious rust.. Guess it is a Canadian issue.. Mine has very little rust, it is 14 years old and has no rust on the springs except for some surface rust.. Eventually I will replace the springs when I get back there to service the shocks and do the brakes, hubs, ect.. I am going to do a complete I guess you would call it restoration over the next year, but it is in great shape as it is.. But I want to keep the vehicle for many years to come.. It has a 128000 miles.. Runs great, looks great and was a 1-owner.. and IMHO any vehicle can be a death trap.. Have a Hub go at hwy speed because you are not paying attention to the hub noise.. seen that a few years back.. I am in Transportation, been in this industry for 45 years.. Seen vehicles burst into flames going down the road because of a gas-line breaking and spraying gas all over the engine.. If one does not keep up with maintaining their ride, it can kill them.. Cheers..

I was mostly focusing on a poor design flaw. We actually replaced 2 more broken main leaves this week in the shop, all where broken the same way. The Hummer H3 was the only one that came apart like that simply because of the shape of the front spring eye. We believe the spring eye broke on the H3 because of rust buildup around the bushing which caused the eye to snap. thanks for watching =)

You are right. Any vehicle can become a death trap. A lot of it stems from the owner negligence. Hear an unusual noise ? Turn the radio up. Problem solved. I'm a professional technician.. I see this all the time. Brakes grinding so bad they have ground the rotor down to the cooling fins. Wheel bearings just screaming in agony ,,,,, etc. There is always one common factor when I see a vehicle clearly neglected. That is the owners answer to one simple question. "How long has it been making that noise ?" "It just started yesterday." Quit with the BS. Every customer lies when you ask that question. Why ? I tend to believe it's one of two things. - They are almost embarrassed that they let the vehicle get to that state. - by saying "It just started yesterday" obviously the damage cannot be that bad. And therefore the repair bill won't be very much. I actually had a customer tell me that. I've been in this trade for a long time. More than 30 years. I would like to believe that I have seen it all and heard it all. Nope. Every day comes a new adventure in neglect and stupidity. You have to think, driving an unsafe vehicle on public roads is a potential hazard for you and everyone around you. Can't afford the repair bill ? Take the bus, take an Uber. It's gonna be a hell of a lot cheaper than a lawsuit when someome gets hurt.

@4:55 you tapped on the gas tank skid plate that is held on by 3 13mm screws, it took me less than one minute to drop the skid pan using an impact wrench... probably 3 minutes using a standard ratchet. The point is the gas tank is formed to allow that spring mounting bolt to slide past it, so while it only took you 15 minutes to burn through the spring, bushing & bolt I had the skid plate dropped, the forward spring mount unbolted and the spring removed from it's perch in under 4 minutes.... Just saying for those of us without a torch, it's usually easier to just remove a 3 bolt skid pan that it is to unnecessarily cut away at things. Hope this helps for future jobs 👍

Great video. The same just happened to my 2008 Hummer h3. On the rear passenger side. Same brake in the exact same area. My Hummer only has 70,000 miles on it. I was lucky. I was on the highway earlier in the day. Mind happens a few blocks from my house. I heard a rubbing sound. I made it home. When I turned off the truck and tried to apply my emergency brakes it was very hard. When I got out I saw my rear driver-side tire push backward toward the finder well rubbing on the mud flaps. I purchased this in 2010 with 50,000 miles on it now it has 70,000 miles on it. This is my backup vehicle. Another ward if I have been driving this regularly. This would have happened sooner.

@simcoespring2 жыл бұрын
The chassis might be similar but the canyon and the Colorado both use a "Berlin" eye in stead of a "dutch eye" and I find that the difference in the eye design makes it so it doesn't let the axle move back like that and if it does, it is Super rare rather than just part of the design.

@simcoespring3 жыл бұрын
yes, we have actually made new main leaves for these with a "downturned" eye. that eye design is usually used on dodge pickups (and a few others) If you see the eye getting "swollen" from rust, the eye looks very rusted or the bushing is falling apart, or if the vehicle has over 200-250k and you plan on keeping it for a while, it might be wise just to replace the whole spring rather than having custom main leaves made. It will reset the "timer" on the lifetime of the springs and you'll be good to go again for a long while.

Therefore when you said it is not the most efficient I thought that is inaccurate. If you had said "not the most elegant" I would not have made my comment. Please keep in mind I did the same job for nearly 5 years as a brake and front end mechanic. Brake and Front end mechanic is a misnomer as if a bushing had to be replaced, front or back I did it. @simcoespring2 жыл бұрын
We had a guy drop the drive shaft into the road and stop the truck in about 2 feet. Bad day.
@Mike-qp8bv2 жыл бұрын
Having a vehicle "pole vault" with a drive shaft is something your going to see in the movies, not in reality. If the u joint breaks or the yolk comes out of the transmission, that driveshaft will literally beat the hell out of the underside of the vehicle. I've seen brake lines and fuel lines get severed. I've seen driveshafts tear right through the floor sheet metal. That shaft might jab into the ground once the vehicle slows enough but even that is highly unlikely. You gotta think, because it is still connected to the differential that shaft is rotating as the car is still moving. Even if it were to catch something like a pothole, that shaft will either just bend or break before launching that 4000 lb vehicle into the air. Most driveshafts in your average RWD car or truck are around 3/16 steel or aluminum alloy. That's not gonna stand a chance over the vehicles weight. It's pure physics. But I will be skeptical and say has it happened ? Maybe. But it is extremely unlikely.
@NullHand2 жыл бұрын
@@Mike-qp8bv I believe this happened once in oval track racing. Speeds much higher than interstate. Vehicles much lighter than the the typical light truck chassis derived vehicles like the Hummer. I think the racing solution was a U bracket to catch the driveshaft if the forward U-joint failed before it could pierce the asphalt and attempt a rear end pole vault.

@@simcoespring I would have loosened it. Knocked it back a bit and grabbed my limg saw zaw blade and cut it off. No having to deal with heat buy a tank and been done. And if anything was a death trap. It wasn't the springs coming on done it was that rusty ass frame dang. Another year the whole damn frame is gonna do what those springs did.
