From my current experience and very detailed research these are my tips: When you actually have been training for some time and you have “mastered” or at least leveled up your technique skill significantly, there is a time where it’s useful to test your 1 rep max for strength increasing purposes. As a beginner (I’m an intermediate) I wish I would of just focused on the 6-12 range. I focused on the 1-8 rep range, usually 1-5. I would of gained a bit more muscle and possibly been even stronger. I can only bench 240ish lbs for 1 rep and been training for over 2 years despite training in strength rep range. (Strength increasing rep range = 3-6 reps. Testing 1 or 2 rep max occasionally increases strength but doing it regularly also increases CNS fatigue, so if done all the time you’re weaker for longer because it’s going to take longer to recover, hindering progress). (Muscle growing (hypertrophy)) training increases muscle. Usually performed in 6-15+ rep range. This is a great rep range the more that I think about it because it allows you to practice your technique more safely and correctly, allowing your balancing strength to improve, doesn’t put much pressure on tendons/joints and leads to more muscle growth which increases strength. Both increase strength and muscle mass. It’s better to focus on hypertrophy first to build an existing muscular frame while your numbers go up steadily and your body recovers faster, allowing you to keep making gains and progress longer than strength training. Lower rep ranges/strength training is very good too. It can help build explosive strength, stress out your muscles, triggering more growth if used occasionally when mainly training for hypertrophy, strengthen your tendons and joints IF form is correct. This is also the way to INJURE joints and tendons if it’s not. Strength training, while it does build muscle.. I recommend after doing a hypertrophy/muscle growth phase because it’s better for strengthening your current sized muscles to their full strength potential. Don’t train every compound lift to absolute failure (Bench Press, Overhead press, Back Squat, Pull-ups, Barbell rows, Chin-ups etc). Leave an extra half rep or full rep for most sets and go to failure occasionally. For accessory exercises like compound movements, feel free to go to absolute failure!!! Why I said I could’ve been stronger training in a higher rep range than strength phase (isn’t that what strength training does? Lol) is because I must’ve accumulated too much CNS fatigue because I was taking every set to failure and starting off with the heaviest weight I could do. YES I could workout 6 days a week, 3 times a day, going to failure every time BUT after a certain point I was making no progress. You may not consciously notice the fatigue too much but your CNS does and this will limit your strength and performance, causing a plateau. I’ve reached a couple of plateaus and just passing past my current one now. Switched from 6 days a week training, 7 sets to failure 3x a day, to 5 days a week training, leaving a rep or two, sometimes even 3 for back squats on compound, only reaching true failure for 1-2 sets. Failure to the point I can’t even lift the bar off my chest and need to roll of shame/tip weights over/get someone to help. Before I was doing that nearly every set, alone. Dangerous hahaha. I will return to strength based work and 6 days a week but right now I’m focusing on more exercises to get stronger at the main ones. Another tip is to focus on Bench Press, Overhead Press, Barbell Squat, Deadlift and pick 1 main priority out of a pulling compound exercise. Selection: (Pull-ups/Barbell Rows/Lat-Pulldowns). Pull-ups are the most useful imo and build up your whole upper body. Then add some accessory exercises. Pick 1 out of each exercise: Biceps/brachiallis - Preacher Curls/Bicep Curls Triceps - Skullcrushers, tricep extension Traps - Shrugs/Face-Pulls Calves - weighted calf raises Abs - hanging leg raises/planks (add weight to either when necessary) Chest and shoulders - shoulder press, chest press So an example workout program for you/beginner would be: Monday (chest, triceps, shoulders) - 5 sets bench press, 3 sets incline bench-press, 3 sets chest press, 3 sets skullcrushers Tuesday (legs) - 5 sets barbell squat, 5 sets front squat, 5 sets calf raises Wednesday = rest Thursday (arm/back day): 5 sets pull-ups, 5 sets hanging leg-raises 3 sets preacher curls, 3 sets facepulls Friday (full body day): 5 sets Overhead press, 5 sets deadlift, 5 sets pull-ups. Saturday and Sunday = rest. It’s a very simple program that you will probably feel underwhelming but it’s just an example. You end up working every part of your body 2x a week and focus on compounds. Compounds are the best exercises for quick muscle growth due to them targeting many more muscles at once and because of increase in HGH and testosterone. Then you also have an accessory to help in every area which the compounds don’t have as great of an impact on. Sure you’ll get bigger arms including biceps from pull-ups but pull-ups alone won’t allow your biceps reach it’s full potential for growth and strength. Once every 3 months up until 12-24 months, switch to lower rep ranges for compound lifts for 1 month at a time to increase strength. This isn’t enough time to accumulate too much CNS fatigue and you’ll get the strength benefits for higher rep work. From a 12-24 months you can focus on strength gains more if you’d like but if your progress slows down it’s good to switch back to hypertrophy for a while or Deload (lift at low intensity, not to failure) for about a week. Feel free to add more accessory exercises and alter the sets and days you workout. The best exercise program is one which: Targets each muscle group 2x a week, trains both strength and hypertrophy, focuses on compound lifts and has at least 1 accessory exercise for every exercise the compounds don’t prioritise and isolates the abs at least weekly. Examples would be 5/3/1, PPL, 5x5, full body workout training 3x a week etc. Also eat a minimum of 1.5g protein per kg of body weight. 2.0g ideally and you can go a bit above this.
@jasonshih3633 Жыл бұрын
@@universalnetwork264 Oh yeah thanks for the tip man but since its been more than a year since I first started working out, I have developed my own routine. My weakest point is obviousl my diet cuz im a college student. I no longer care for hypertrophy, not really. I also shifted my focus to hybrid calisthenics, so squat is the only big 3 I focus on. I still bench press, but I'm kinda planning to cut it off now. My routine isnt great but this is what i do (if I start on Monday) Monday (back): 3 sets of weighted pull ups 3 sets of front lever hold (adjust based on level) 3 sets of front lever raises (adjust based on level) (For the previous 2, I do 2 sets only when on schedule) 3 sets of weighted inverted rows 3 sets of bicep curls/scap pull ups Tuesday (push): 3 sets of bench press 3 sets of weighted dips (1 set warm up at half weight before) 3 sets of incline db press/lat raises 3 sets of tricep pushdown 3 sets of dragonflag (adjust based on level) Wednesday (leg): 3 sets of squats (2 warm up sets before) 3 sets of RDL with barbell 3 sets of sitting calf raise 3 sets of shin raises If machines are free, I would go for 3 sets of leg extension and leg curl. I sometimes also do 3 sets of db shoulder press on leg day I repeat the same on the next 3 days, and rest on the last day. Ofc, its all subject to change based on the day, because sometimes I go climbing so I might rest an extra day or change the way I workout.

I love you Greg but it's well known among youngsters like me that most of his content is just for laughs and is not fitness oriented. However, if there are people who want to be like him, I'm x2 shocked at people's mindset and way of thinking since recently when Speed almost set his house on fire literally. Video aside, just wanna say I love your content and you taught me 90% of everything I know about fitness for a year that I started working out and only took everything by heart in the last month ever since I became consistent with hitting the gym and going "harder than last time" and YES it took me 1 freaking year to become consistent but I did it and I'm loving it!
@kura292 жыл бұрын
If even 1% of his audience ends up going into the gym and recreating what he was doing, that's still 100,000 people who will almost certainly end up with life long injuries and damage due to his shitty gym video. Although he's not fitness oriented, he shouldn't be excused for putting out a video which can have serious repercussions for many easily influenced people.
