@@fusspot57 Had to go back and do a double take on the sui grip lol. I can't lie when I first started lifting suicide grip actually helped me practice good form on bench at a super low weight, idk why it was just easier for me to keep my shoulders blades retracted, keep elbows from flaring and forced me to focus on slow good reps. Haven't done it in years though since then and definitely didn't do any crazy noodle chest bounces for 130kg lololol

You don't have to pause the weight on a bench press. Just keep good form and control the weight. I can hit 385 for 5 reps and have never once had an issue.
@fusspot57
@fusspot57 Жыл бұрын
@@rjskum688 You only need the ability to pause in competitive powerlifting. Press before the referee's command and that's a red! If you are training for a meet it's always good to do some sets with a pause and not sink into the chest at the bottom.
@rjskum688
@rjskum688 Жыл бұрын
@@fusspot57 I will try it for sure if it has benefits and will add to my lift. I was just saying not pausing is not gonna cause injury like coach Greg said. Letting gravity take control and letting the bar bounce off your chest and using the momentum to help press the weight up will cause injury for sure.

Agree with everything said. He needs to get a coach who actually understand what they are doing. Not only that. He has his boxing match 14th of January. No need to 1 rep max and on top of that bad form an ego lift it. High risk of injury to no reward. And for explosiveness, control the weight down and then explode on the concentric part of the lift instead of letting the weight pull him down. All the best to KSI on his fight. Watching him almost a decade and only want the best for him.

I helped coach a young man with his squats. He was afraid to "go heavy". He said that to the wrong guy. He went from 135 lbs to 315 lbs for reps. And got him to an HONEST 225 lbs bench. He honestly thought he needed PEDs to reach that. Smh, don't worry. I got him more squared away than last time.

Three minutes in and I agree he is a boxer and kicks ass, but for him to say “let’s see how strong we are” and then have that type of form that could lead to an injury makes zero sense. It’s just crazy how people have amazing genetics, half ass train and look the way they do. And when I say half ass train, I just mean the technique doesn’t even have to be addressed yet they still make some pretty decent gains. Someone like KSI could’ve probably got into powerlifting and do fairly good if he had a coach.

Actually, squatting is a big part of boxing. Especially for shorter fighters. KSI is 5'10" and depending on his boxing style, he very well could bend his legs to about 90 degrees. He probably won't ever need to do ass to grass squats, but squatting to parallel could definitely be of benefit. Lunges would also be of great benefit.

In my opinion the most important things to learn first for weight lifting. Are proper that form, and how to not ego lift. A lot of people lift to much and don’t realize they’re ego lifting, they just think more weight = more strength so why not do as much as possible? And then because, they’re new their form breaks down and overtime that leads to injury.
@torr3n

Yeah, same, I was taught the proper form first, I remember squatting empty bars for the first couple of months, just to get a proper form to then progress, only problem I have is a bad hip, because I'm overweight, and was squatting more weights, like 100kg for reps, and I was 116kg at the time(my heaviest), I was trying to go deeper, but it got me injured.

@gregdoucette big fan of the channel. But I also work in Olympic boxing program and these guys are making sure there is always high bar speed . This is desirable for sports performance elasticity. Hence the chest pad and spot on the way up. Heavy eccentric and maintain as much force as possible at a reasonable bar speed. Helps the stretch shortening cycle for more snappy punches. The quarter front squats are for trunk stability and core not quads. If you want to see more training like this check out world champion throwers Frederick Dacres in discus or Johannes Vetter in javelin. Both some of the greatest Olympic athletes ever and lift exactly like this because throwing anything from a projectile to a punch is all about generating elasticity and neurological over muscular adaptations. Strength is useful for injury prevention but can be very detrimental to performance at low bar speeds. Much love and hope this provides some context.

Greg, let me ask you something. 10:15 you said “lighter weights for greater speeds” and I want your opinion on this, I’ve trained Okinawan Goju Ryu for 22 years and tournament fought for 14 years. I have always trained for explosive power and speed by pushing or pulling as fast as I can and then going slow on the release of tension. For example, bench press, as fast as I can on the push and as slow as I can on the way back down. I noticed because of pushing hard and fast I need a heavy weight to avoid injury. If the weight is too light and I push hard and fast every rep I risk hypertension and over extension. Am I training wrong?

Hahah i was waiting for this video😂 Tbh my opinion is that the weightlift training of boxers can and must be different than bodybuilding related techniques. So its not even that dumb, only the fact setting PR's close before the boxing match can be risking high injuries.

2 minutes in and to the comment you’ve made defending him about not going low enough, he’s not going low enough because of bad form, which will eventually lead to an injury, you can see his knees going inwards, which puts a lot of stress on them and restricts his squat depth because of being in a compromised position.

Great video as usual! although I have a question (for anyone who would like to answer). ROM may not be nearly as important for boxers/fighters as for someone training for strength or hypertrophic purposes. But wouldn't it still be very good to implement to some extent for the sake of mobility? I've trained fighting sports for a long period of my life (along with bodybuilding style training) and I always felt that doing a greater range of motion even had a great impact on my fighting, and my trainers advocated the same thing. Although, I trained Muay Thai instead, which is very different from boxing.

his genetics are saving him... to be honest... I think lighter weights, more reps, and as explosive as posible should be his workout... I do martial arts as well we don't really lift heavy. more reps lighter weight and as explosive as possible. but core and legs would have insane work outs... cuz you have to move a lot and power mostly come from there...

Coach @gregdoucette , research has suggested squatting slightly below parallel will increase the rate of force development (RFD), which is a measure of explosive strength. Doing partial squats maybe done to activate his gluteus. So over all it just depends on what the trainer is trying to achieve from the session for KSI. Have they done a reliable testing session to acutely identify where his fitness level is currently at?. this is why its really important to identify his needs and requirements for boxing and have a proper structured controlled training plan. I would love to see how his trainer has planned his training sessions to develop his boxing.

The type of training he's doing isn't for hypertrophy hence the lack of full range of motion, the range of motion he uses in the front squat is specific to training explosiveness and power in the quads for ducking and bursting upwards in boxing. In short, it's boxing specific training, not hypertrophy training, completely different things.
