In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been aggressively pursuing transformative judicial reforms, in his words, to make Israel more democratic. Meanwhile, thousands have been taking to the streets for the past 15 weeks straight in the largest protests in Israel’s history. We explore the history of Israel’s founding to explain why this country is so strange and why it has no constitution. We’ll also take a look at the reforms and the coalition pursuing them to diagnose what risk these policies may pose to Israeli democracy. Turns out that when you invent a country out of thin air in the 1940s, it’s helpful to write a constitution!
Who would’ve thunk it?
We would have. That’s why you need to hire Spectacles consulting for your next nation-building project. We won’t let you down!
Spectacles is a love letter to democracy, its values, its caretakers, and its ideas. Around the world, individual rights and representative government are facing unprecedented attacks from the forces of reaction and revisionism. But despite liberal democracy’s real shortcomings and today’s all-too-fashionable cynicism, we remain committed to its preservation and improvement. Join us as we explore just what liberal democracy is, how it comes about, and how it can best be maintained in a changing world.

It's not news, & it "explains" everything from their political viewpoint- a " liberal Democrat" view. It's deceptive, not disclosing it's an activist democrat channel here for the purpose of " saving democracy" which they deem endangered. So be aware it's a very biased, one sided view- & not necessarily true.

The last section, "What's Needed" was easily the best part of this video. An interesting discussion about not only what Israel needs to fix it's current issue, but also how more democracy without checks and balances can lead to very bad places. The will of the majority can be a very serious issue, hence the need for individual rights and checks and balances within the government and its institutions. As usual an excellent video. An elite cabal of Neo-liberal ideologically driven Israeli judges electing their next in line offers no CHECKS & no BALANCES, none whatsoever! A travesty on steroids. In the US, an elected president presents his ideologically catapulted judges to congress (true representatives of all US citizens) for full public scrutiny. A fully transparent essential ritual. US citizens can call their very own Senators and espouse their grievances ad nauseam. 1/2 of the Israeli populace reject the idea.Welcome to the intricate, messy, noisy & at times unruly machinations of Democracy. States that were built upon ethnic cleansing are unstable, and will surely collapse eventually. Decades of crimes against the Palestinians that were brutally concealed, and anyone dared to reveal them faced death or career loss. Due to Palestinian resistance and fighting for freedom of speech, Israelis were pushed to elect far right people to reach high positions, dropping the mask of "tolerance and peace" and exposing Israel's true face. Now, Israel is stuck with ruined reputation worldwide, and religious fanatics at the top that are calling for "finishing the job", referring to the ethnic cleansing campaign Israel committed before its creation, the Nakba, causing more and more violence. My heart goes to the Palestinians, who are the biggest victims of this government.

Thanks to everyone who watched! This is a complicated topic with a lot of issues we didn't have time to touch on. While we did our best to be as nuanced as we could, we're bound to make mistakes and welcome your feedback. On that note, you can check our sources for everything here & find corrections below: www.spectacles.news/israels-crisis-isnt-over/ 5:44 - As pointed out in a reply by Ephraim, who is a kind viewer who helped us research this topic, 10k cases is not 10k cases of constitutional review but the court's entire workload. 10:30 - One astute viewer pointed out that South African Apartheid is not an example of majority tyranny but rather minority tyranny. That's right! Our mistake. Still, it stands as another proof of the necessity of liberal rights for realizing real democracy. 11:00 - Canada also lacks a codified constitution. Whoops! But they’re in the same boat as New Zealand, so it’s a moot point.

The problem here is that Israel doesn't have a constitution proper. One of the biggest issues I see is that the courts are running wild and abusing judicial review to push the policy whims of judges. Which is not the role of judges who normally don't have the Democratic, or even institutional perview to do so. Roe v Wade in the US is a classic example. For nearly two centuries it was commonly understood that states determined abortion law. Yet the courts just up and decided one day that it violated the over century old 14th Amendment. The people who wrote the 14th Amendment, the politicians who voted on it and the people who elected those politicians did not intend for the 14th Amendment to grant abortion rights. Hell 3/4 of American states banned abortion at the time. Yet the judiciary a century later decided to butt into a very contentious issue and decide it once and for all. They completely ignored the democratic will of the people to play policy maker. The Constitution and it's Amendments which do constrain Democracy themselves were ratified Democratically. The existing demos found the issues and values so important they were willing to restrict the future demos from changing them without a significant majority. Women's voting rights and the end of slavery were achieved via Democracy and not Democratic fiat. Democracy is by no means perfect, but every level of government and every action of government needs some level of Democratic legitimacy to govern.

Yeah, only a)that's not necessarily right and b)it shouldn't change anything. We don't know whether the judges are leftists or not because they aren't even allowed to talk about politics. The only reason why this suddenly became "a common knowledge" is because the politicians have been using the High Court as the scapegoat for decades. If one looks at the actual decisions, they don't look like "left vs. right", they look like equality vs. violation of the rights of minorities/private people and corrupt decisions from the government, that happens to be right because every single government since 96 is right. And regardless, having an uncooperative High Court is kind of the whole point. The High Court is the only "check and balance" over the government, and it would be a super bad situation if the only "check and balance" is also overly lenient to the ones it's supposed to check. But to the point, I digress. The current system is completely broken, and as someone who has been protesting since January, I absolutely won't be satisfied if we just go back to the status quo. It's not sustainable anymore, which the video quite rightly mentions.

It would in fact be anti-semetic of YOU to call me so, as this would be implying that all Jews and people of Jewish/Israelite descent support the apartheid state of Israel when they do not. In fact, nearly all countries, with the major exception of the US (not a good look when your only main ally is #1 in inverventions into democratically elected countries, school shootings, and can't let people survive on a minimum wage and was created on the backs of enslaved people that the country still won't accept), denounce Israel because of the easily accessible evidence, which you could find very easily if YOU weren't an Islamophobic liberal (I'm not conservative). To be honest, I'm sure that when the Nazis were winning WW2, the Aryan populations of Nazi Germany lived a not so bad life. The real question is on the Jews, disabled, Gypsies, Romanis, Soviets, and many other groups during this time. This same thing applies to Israel, where you can clearly see the horrible things the Israeli government is doing to the Palestinian population. They don't even hide it. The reforms Netanyahu and the coalition wants basically over empowers the legislative by the fact that they want to limit judicial review and the power to override decisions. This is why a constitution is needed so that the three branches of government can check on one another to limit their powers, not just the legislative.
@raphaelcollado4285
@raphaelcollado4285 10 ай бұрын
To add, I think it is only right that the Judiciary has the power to review legislation because they are the least powerful branch out of the three branches. While these Justices are not elected, its the beauty of that they do not have to worry on their decisions out fear of being elected out of office, thus they make more democratic decisions to change society. By limiting their power to review cases, it empowers both the executive and legislative branches which could lead to unchecked power, especially if they can just overturn the decision of the court by majority both. And in that, democracy dies, by empowering the two already powerful branches while limiting the Judiciary.

I am an American who went to these protests, in Tel Aviv on a night where over 100,000 people showed up! I am very sad about what is happening in the country, and most people in the country are, young and old. The country has been successful and strong under secular rule and the secular people that built the modern state are not having enough kids. The orthodox will soon control the country, and the ideals that founded the country will die. Also, to the people that will try to make this have to do with the occupation, just know that most secular people are quite radically in favor of a two state solution, it's just the right wing and the ultra-orthodox that will fight it. This country needs a miracle.

Dear SPECTACLES, Thank you for a well researched and developed piece. As the famous Bene Gesserit saying by author Frank Herbert, "...When religion and politics travel in the same cart, the riders believe nothing can stand in their way. Their movements become headlong - faster and faster and faster. They put aside all thoughts of obstacles and forget the precipice does not show itself to the man in a blind rush until it's too late....". Israel is Technically a Theocracy in Democratic Sheep's Clothing. Benjamin Netanyahu created a term used in Israel now to foment fear and bolster the influence of the Jewish Religious Political Right, the term is "Demographic Bomb". If it's 25% Non-Jewish population continues to increase at its present rate, Israel will lose its Jewish ( and political ) demographic majority, it is important to keep in mind that the fight between the Knesset and the Israel Supreme Court is fundamentally about this. On a similar tack this same process is taking place in the one nation state in the world that acts as a Bulwark for the Israeli state, the United States Of America. Forgetting the recent news of US Immigration issues, the US immigrants continues in comparatively large populations of individuals from all over the world, and one of the fastest growing immigrant groups are those originating from the Islamic States. US census number show decade after decade of an increase in Arab / Islamic immigration, and a corresponding increase in population growth as well. Growing both demographically, religiously, and soon politically, trends indicate that the influence the North African and Arab populations will equal and then rival the vaunted Jewish American political lobbies, the irony being that far greater implications for both the Palestinians and the state of Israel will exist in Israel's own Non-Jewish populations, and also within the marbled halls of the American Congress, than whatever happens currently between the Knesset and the Israel Supreme Court.
@Muenni
@Muenni 10 ай бұрын
Did you seriously just claim "one of the fastest growing immigrant groups" to be people from the IS? How useful would such a metric be? And did you equate Arabs and "Islamic" immigration? Muslims can and do of course immigrate from countries such as Indonesia or Pakistan, not just Arabic countries, and will be part of any metric measuring the Muslim immigrant population. Muslims (not just Arabs) make up maybe 1.1% of the US population and, if you believe Pew's predictions, will double to over 2% in the next 30 years. On what basis do you assume they're going to gain such massive political influence? Jews are over-represented in Congress, whereas the smaller Muslim population is still under-represented. Why would that flip? And even if it did, why would that minority hold so much influence over American politics that it is of greater importance to Israel than the clash between Israel's own political organs and their supporters? This seems like some very wild speculation.

What's wrong with them having a country of their own where they can shape their collective society and destiny? Perhaps you have learned about many bad Jewish people, especially powerful ones. Haven't you realized that there are good and bad people that are Jews, that the only caveat is that Jews are disproportionately represented in most white collar industries compared to their small population, and that you're simply picking out the bad important Jews while ignoring the good ones? Even worse, you (I assume you're the typical anti-semite) get the bad ones to represent the entire Jewish people in your head, easily believe claims that we're all in on some really bad things that are causing the world's problems, and that we are so bad that we should not be treated like other peoples & therefore grave actions should be taken against Jews to make the world a better place? And here I am, a Jew that wonders what I did so wrong to get bullied in elementary school by a neo-Nazi German kid. One time, he even beat me up in the middle of class during instruction time after he screamed "dirty Jew" at me. This is in Canada, btw, and no one reacted in the same way they would react if I was black or something. The other kids looked away in discomfort. The teacher pulled him off of me and tells him to take a walk and calm down for 15 minutes in the hallway. And there was my family, who was very large before WWII. One day, the Germans conquered their village and they were all killed in their house, with only one person (my grandmother) managing to escape while her 7 sisters were murdered. And there are Israelis who, despite their country having done some things wrong, are very patriotic & believe in the overall righteousness of their cause but constantly have to defend the very existence of their country, something pretty much no other ethnic group has to do. And then there is you and all the other people like you. People who criticize Jewish culture - no problem with that, every culture has flaws, some are better, some are worse. But that's not what you are. You hate. And you can keep having your irrational hatred although I suggest you do some reflection on your morality & humanity. At the same time, I hope we'll remember our mistakes and stay together. God willing, we'll deal with the ironic tragedy of people wanting to kill us in our own country, take back Judaea and Samaria, deport terrorists, and offer all Arabs a wonderful life while getting rid of our own unofficial discrimination that too often happens against them by not all, but some Jews. Then, if people like you try to hurt us ever again, the ones who didn't move to Israel will be able to do so; they'll have a place to go to.
