I was watching Ryan Mcbeth, and he was talking about Victory conditions both Israel and Hamas. He pointed out that victory for Israel would entail eliminating Hamas COMPLETELY to a man. Whereas victory for Hamas only requires mere survival. As Cappy pointed out, it's a huge advantage that Israel is able to fight right next door to their country instead of overseas like the USA'S last few guerilla wars. However, I still don't think it's enough of an advantage for Israel to defeat Hamas completely. The war is going to be absolutely devastating for Palestinian civilians, but I just can't see a situation where Hamas doesn't survive in some form even if they're weakened substantially by the end of the war.

the point is not eliminating completely, this is misunderstood. the military objetictive is to destroy hamas military ability to cause israel any serious harm for many years to come. there's no way to destroy completely hamas, al-qaeda, isis etc, because they are IDEAS. the IDF knows this. this objective was purposed right at the start of the war to the knesset. people are taking the motivational and political speeches and taking it as military objetctives. it's kinda wrong. of course hamas will survive. the point is to reduce it to what ISIS is today.

Instead of sending in the infantry they came up with a plan to fast map it by using colord smoke and air survalince. It worked great led us all the way to the house where they started from. The insurgents didnt understand why red smoke was filling up their hide out untill the airforce drop that bomb on them. The tunnel i belive was over a mile long. Gaza also has a couple things going against it. Reinforced tunnels can be prone to flooding . Its also at sea level. Large tunnel systems can be flooded or partially flooded with a few industrial pumps as Mediterranean sea is literally right there. Flooding water into tunnels causes panic as well as inhibits movement making audible location easier. Sound travels well under water. Thermobaric munitions would travel long distances in Reinforced systems as well. Plus technology nowadays could include armed robotic weapons as well as drones . Armed ,unarmed, or suicide varieties. On top of typical mines, booby traps located in tunnels overall not a fun time . Unless your the guy pumping in water.

A possible way to detect the tunnels is to use Seismic Survey. They use it for exploring or oil. It has been used for at least 40 years. During Vietnam, a friend of mine was a forward observer. When not out on foot patrol, he would sometimes strap himself on the skid of a Huey and them would fly low over the jungle and drop mortar rounds to see of the could "scare up" some V.C. he dropped one whicle resulted in a large explosion. As the copter pulled up out of the fire ball, explosions continued in front of them, blowing trees into the air! The explosions continued in a line, sometimes branching out the the left or right. They returned the base and reported their find. A patrol was sent out, and it was discovered that the morar shell hit the mouth of a VC tunnel with a hospital and supplies and loaded with weapons & ammo! The number KIA was around 300! Front one mortar round...

As you well point out, tunnels have a very long history dating from the time of Alexander the Great. 2500 years have validated the effectiveness of the strategy. There are several easy ways to counter them, but they require technology not commonly employed. If large pumps rapidly as in extremely rapidly fill the tunnel with water then a cap is applied and an explosive is set off in the water. End of tunnel and all that it may contain. The physics of wave transmission in water in a contained space end all use of the tunnel. There are several key parts extremely rapid filling from hardened entrance that is rapidly closed and an explosive set off. And there are many technical details. But it is basically just the physics of underwater explosion's at work.

There are just two obvious flaws in this attempt: 1. You can't cap a tunnel you don't fully control. 2. Israel has an extreme water scarcity, so enormous amounts of water are just not available for such endeavours, except for seawater, and that introduces the problem, that it would ruin the groundwater and therefore worsen the water scarcity.

Rocket candy you're referring to there is nothing new for amateur rockets. Specific impulse isn't as good as the top of the line stuff but a decent 120 seconds should be achievable. Really not bad compared to commercial launch grade solid rockets with ammonium perchlorate being at around 240s (yes that's the unit it ends up with, it's pretty confusing weird until you read up on it). So I guess it makes sense to me that a scaled up rocket could travel those distances with such a fuel given what tiny amateur rocket engines can do. I honestly do wonder about their production locations, most amateurs have a healthy respect for the mixture as it's being prepared. The steps involving heating, mixing and forming it into the right shape solid is already fairly exciting when it goes wrong for small diameter amateur stuff. Given the import restrictions I guess most of it must enter as raw ingredients and get processed within Gaza itself, wouldn't surprise me if making so any large rocket engines occasionally results in fires/explosions during preparation. Unless there might be a few tunnels that haven't been found allowing for them to be made elsewhere and smuggled in as ready to use chunks of rocket candy/fully assembled. And since they can't really pick the best/consistent ingredients thus likely have to make do with what they can get there's not going to be a high consistency for the types of ingredients, might be another challenge making mishaps more likely or just resulting in duds.

Here's a way to deal with the tunnels. Pump in salt water from the sea. Deploy trackers on floats into the tunnels. If the trackers pop up then you've found some sort of drain that can be plugged or sealed. Carry on until the water comes out of the hatches. Not sure how well it would work, and it would take a lot of time and the pumps would be vulnerable.

Another possible strategy is if you can get about 50 metres down the tunnel, seal it off with duct tape and polyethylene sheet. Run a 4 inch duct to that point. Mostly poly over the entrance, then fill the space with a fuel air mix. Detonate a high brisance device close to the entrance, and let the shock wave from the explosion pop open any intermediate blocking points. Then get a big ass fan and some colored smoke - if you've got good airflow it worked and you can look for where the smoke is coming out, if not, the tunnel is collapsed somewhere or there was some other blockage going on. The problem with the flooding idea is that moving that much water would take a lot of setup time, If you're analyzing a tunnel entrance, you probably don't want to be hanging around very long.

Tunnel systems have been used for millennia. But they take time and lots of human effort to create and even destroy. Most recently tunnels were used in WWI to try to blow open spots in the German lines before an attack. During WWII The Maginot Line was a tunnel system. Many islands in the pacific theater used tunnels with good effect on the Marines. Then the VC in Vietnam against the French and again, against the U.S.. Plus traffickers use them along the USA's southern border to smuggle everything into the USA.

It'd run into the communication issue mentioned in the video that makes entering it with troops risky as well. So said robot would have to deploy some kind of mesh network behind it as it goes (seems expensive and will be time limited due to batteries) or have a wired connection back home (easily cut). The alternative would be a fully autonomous robot that tries to get back to the place it was deployed from and reports where it has been. Inertial navigation is theoretically possible when the rotation and speed is known at all times providing. But it'd have to be a pretty good robot both at making it back before running out of battery and not getting stuck somewhere.
