G'day Guys and Gals!
In todays video I take my 2018 Isuzu Mu-x out to Glasshouse Mountains Forestry 4x4 trails. Glasshouse Mountains in filled with tough 4wd tracks and you can pick you own adventure. From mild to insane, Glasshouse Mountains 4WD tracks have it all. I tackled some scenic trails before hitting up one of my favourite 4wd tracks at Glasshouse Mountains. The trail that I tested the Isuzu Mu-x on is a loop track around the trail called Ball Bearing. The climb is steep, washed out with ruts and very rocky.
While 4wding at Glasshouse mountains I dropped my tyre pressures to 16PSI to enable the tyres to bag out and give me more traction. I also disengaged traction control and engaged my Harrop Eaton E Locker in the Isuzu Mu-x Rear Differential. This gives the rear axle 100% drive to both rear wheels regardless of weather they are on the ground or not. While 4x4ing the tracks at Glasshouse Mountains I used Low range 1st gear in the automatic transmission the majority of the time.
Its important when 4x4ing tough tracks through mud, ruts and rocks to remember to drive slowly and pick your lines through the obstacles. Taking obstacles slower means you will be in more control and put less stress on your vehicle and its driveline. Finding the right momentum to get you through an obstacle is important also.
The Isuzu Mu-x is fitted with a 2 inch suspension lift and 275/70r17 Falken wildpeak Mud terrain tyres. These tyres are all terrain but they are a more aggressive tread pattern then some other brands. As you can see in this video the Falken wildpeak A/T's performed well in the mud, rocks and ruts.
When 4wding tough tracks the Automatic transmission fitted to the 2018 Isuzu Mu-x paired with the torquey 4jj1-txc motor really comes into its own. This setup enables you to tackle obstacles nice and slow and with a lot of control. Finding the correct gear is easy with the 6 speed automatic transmission.
My tips for 4wding in tough terrain are -
- Lower tyre pressures
- engage low range gearing and 4wd
- disengage traction control
- engage diff lock (if fitted)
- drive slowly and use the correct momentum for the obstacle
- HAVE FUN :)
When 4wding through rocks and rock crawling, try to take the obstacle slow and steady. You will be able to find the traction and allow the suspension and the tyres to claw there way up the rocks. Using the correct tyre pressures and having upgraded suspension will help with this.
The Isuzu Mu-x was never designed to tackle 4wd tracks like this. With some modifications you can turn the Isuzu Mu-x from a family wagon into a tough off road tourer and weekender. The 4jj1 engine is a great reliable engine that has been proved and tested over the years. Paired with the 6 speed auto it is the perfect combination for off roading. With a 2 inch lift and some bigger all terrain or mud terrain tyres the Isuzu Mu-x can become a very capable off road vehicle. It is a really fun vehicle to 4wd in and take off road.
My favourite type of driving is this technical rock driving because it makes you pick your lines and really think about wheel placement. It also tests your ability to 4wd and puts you and your vehicle through its paces. This is a fun way to learn to 4x4 as well, it can help to have a spotter on these technical trails to help with wheel placement. By using a spotter you can avoid unnecessary damage to your vehicle and get through obstacles a lot easier.
I have fitted every modification to the Isuzu MU-X myself and really enjoy filming and teaching you guys how to do the same to your own 4x4 vehicles. The modifications I have done are listed below -
-AFN Bull Bar
-AFN 9" LED Spotlights
-Domin8r Extreme 12000IB winch

Hi Nick just wondering how did you fit a bigger tyre where the spare wheel goes. I have a 2016 LST Mux. By the looks of it I can only fit 265/65 /17's in where the spare sits. How did you get to fit your larger profile tyre in there ? Or is that tyre partially flat ? 🤔

Now this is responsible 4wding! Using skill and not just brute strength to get up. Not smashing your rig and leaving the trail in a good condition for the next person to come around. An absolute pleasure to watch! Waiting for my 2018 MUX that I've just popped a deposit on. Building it in my head since then and getting a real diff lock is something I'm contemplating. It either came down to getting a auto Fortuner 2017 with diff lock or the manual MUX without...couldn't go past the manual. Hopefully it's a softer ride than my 2006 Hilux but just as hardy!

@zaidonthemoon144 Was just delivered this morning. So far, so good. It its sound awesome and is such a smooth and soft ride compared to by beautiful Hilux. My first two major works on it will be suspension and lift and bullbar/winch/spotties set up. A bit nervous on payload so may have to go gvm upgrade, for which I can't actually find any kits to do a home install. Getting the heavy duty suspension will also harden the ride, which is something I'm not looking forward to!

It sounds like a rear main oil leak. If it is dripping oil then I would push for a warranty repair. If it is just a very minor oil mist around the area, I would clean it all down and check it in 1000km to see how bad the leak is. 👍

do you use the rugged terrain mode? If not the traction control on the mux/dmax is actually quite capable. the only thing that makes me choose the triton vs dmax/mux (assuming they have same traction control algorythm on mux and dmax) is most reviewer said the traction control on the dmax/mux is trash and in my country the isuzu and mitsubishi only offer the non diff lock variant so i need to choose who had the best traction control.
