Thank you so much for this wonderful video. I did know and do practice the method you show of rinsing the rice as I was taught this method by my foster sister who is from Guam. What I did not know and I am grateful for your teaching is the three additives of salt, rice vinegar, and lard which I will definitely be trying the next time I make steamed rice. I also appreciate your sharing that there are many benefits to using rice water and why it should not just be disposed of. I save the water from rinsing my rice and add some of the saved rainwater I use in my garden. There is also a lacto recipe that I just learned about that I am planning to try this gardening season as well. May God always Bless you with good health and prosperity.

Two cups of water for 1 cup of long grain rice (basmati rice is best tasting). 3/4 tsp. salt. 1 tsp butter. Bring water to a boil and stir in the salt and butter. stir the rice briefly. Reduce heat to minimum temp. Let rice set for another 10-15 minutes. Serve fluffy, nutty tasting rice with a meat and sauce of your choice. This recipe will serve 3-4 people with other vegetable sides.

Interesting idea. I use Jasmine rice. 1.5 ratio water to rice, no rinse, small amount of salt and butter. I may try adding a dash of white wine vinegar to see what difference it makes, otherwise I will stick with my way of cooking rice which was handed down from my grandmother.

Never claim that it is a big mistake to just add water to cook rice. It is the most standard practice everyone in Asia does and not a big mistake. There are many types of rice and many ways of cooking it. What you are teaching here is one method of cooking a particular flavoured rice using normal plain rice. Some species of rice only need water and nothing else and taste sweet. Of course, you can add anything to create your own flavour, like Pilau rice, chicken rice, etc.

Totally agree. I never rinse the rice at all but learnt how to add it to boiled water and let it cook in that. I even taught my son this method and he would rather cook his own rice now tha buy it from the local asian takeout. Its tasty and not gluggy. Ratio is 1 to 1 1/2. So 1 1.2 cups water boiled then turned to 1, very low heat then add 1 cup rice put a lid on and walk away, keep checking till its how you like it, . We add a strainer that has our spices like cardamon and anise to flavour the water and leave it in when adding the rice. Ewe, youd never see me adding "lard" of all things to it

I have never heard of the addition of salt but it makes perfect sense as salt added to pasta water can improve the qualities of pasta quite substantially. Acidification also makes sense much of the water here is alkaline and the climate is very dry, rice can be VERY difficult to properly cook.

Basmati is easiest to cook. Formula is whatever amount of rice, add double amount of water. Pinch of salt, half teaspoon of butter. Bring to boil and then reduce the heat till it is barely simmering. Keep pot covered, stir once after 10 min. Total time needed to cook is 20 min. Sometimes I add half a tea spoon of roasted cumin seeds or a tiny pinch of saffron.

Not all rice is meant to be washed. Some rice comes pre-washed, and even “fortified,” which means the extra benefits are going to be washed out if you do a pre-wash. The right answer is: “know your rice, and where it comes from.” Big bags of rice, directly bagged and packaged from a manufacturer is likely the kind that can benefit from a good picking over and washing….

I was wondering about that ..but you see the Asian community implement this as a standard practice...i have never washed the rice when i cook it...also they say the rice has arsenic...dont' know how much you would have to consume to actually become toxic .

@@annatullison1482 From Japan. The purpose of washing rice is to remove dust and dirt that has accumulated during storage. Also, this is to remove the rice bran left on the surface, which causes a slight odor and yellowing (though I think modern rice milling technology leaves very little of it). It is also used to increase the water absorption rate of the rice by making slight scratches on the surface of the rice. Nowadays, wash-free rice that does not require washing is also available, but in my opinion, it is a little more expensive and the taste and nutrients are inferior. Arsenic? I've never heard of it...

Thank you very much for your rice cooking instructions. I will definitely try and will share your instructions with friends. I usually cook Jasmine rice. I like the gentle fragrance and the softer gentle flavour I prefer to the typical Basmati rice used in Canada. i am having a bit of a difficulty following your fast descriptions and translation to English. Number of times I had to stop and rewind your video. Could please slow the translation, or include a transcript that I can have google translate to English. Thank you.

Good but there are better ways: I replace vinegar with a teaspoon of lemon juice per 100gr basmati. Start boiling the water and butter/oil and salt in a handless metalic vessel (with cover). after boiling add strained rice , cover and put in preheated pressure cooker. 10min, cook medium, just the pressure whishling. Turn off and leave it 5 min. Ready in 15min. Lemon and oil makes it non sticky and shiny. Water is a big quaestion, I like at least 180gr water for 100gr basmati. Carefull no to get burned when taking the vessel out! If no cover, aluminum foil does it. Without cover, measuring the water is pointless, rice absorbs what it finds easily. Food for a familly in 15min is not bad, (add mushrooms peas or anything that you ike and will cook in 15min in a pressure cooker, wanna try peanuts and cashews next.

Forgot: why basmati, or Thai rice only. In Europe and USA probably Canada too rice is often contaminated with arsenic. Indian and Thai rice has less of arsenic. So you know. I miss st. Andreas and arborio, but arsenic is a known carcinogen and risky !!

Arsenic in rice. To get rid of arsenic in rice, you can1234: Rinse rice when it's raw and when it's cooked to remove some arsenic. Boil rice with excess water (six cups of water for every one cup of rice) and drain the remaining water after cooking. Soak rice overnight before cooking and discard the soaking water. This can reduce arsenic levels by 80 percent.
