One thing that I always find annoying is I don’t know where to watch, what time to watch, and who is competing at these competitions. I wish it was more structured like other sports leagues where it’s easy to find a broadcast and a schedule for the nfl, nba, nhl, etc which I hope this will help solve that problem

There's 1 thing that does need to change. I've watched the sport for roughly 35 years and 1 downside is when events go to places where the sport isn't popular, you see athletes competing in practically empty stadiums. Having events in Qatar and China when the organisers know the stadiums will be empty. They either need to market it better for these countries or go somewhere else.

I don't mind the Michael Johnsons track league, cause it's his private organization and he can do whatever he wants with it. Where outrage should be directed for excluding field events is World Ultimate (watered down) Championships.

By the way I think both of those organizations are terrible even for long distance track cause both of them exclude my favourite events - 3000mSC and 10'000m. Also Michael Johnson's track leaugues format is terrible for 3000m and 5000m group cause it's going to have no pacers and people will be forced to double in both events, making it for slow and booring races with tired athletes.

Honestly, I agree with Johnson. I ran sprints for 10 years, and one thing I noticed is that us current/former athletes have biases for our respective disciplines. Sprinters favor sprinting events, distance runners favor distance, field athletes favor etc etc. Grand Slam Track is his league, he gets to do whatever he wants with it. He doesn't favor distance or field events because he didn't compete in those events. I think Tara misinterpreted his quote. Johnson wasn't insulting the field events, he is simply staying in his lane (pun intended). And who knows, if Grand Slam Track is successful, Johnson said he's open to adding other events in the future.

4:15 I mean, surely it’s kinda obvious as to why Chopra’s THAT much more popular on social media than others; his nationality. Let’s imagine Chopra was from the USA. Do we really think he’d be anywhere near as popular as he is? Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great that field events are getting attention through people like Chopra (and Nadeem) and Duplantis, but using Chopra as an example to show that field events are as popular as track events isn’t the most accurate way of doing it, imho. It probably helps that Chopra’s literally India’s ONLY hope of an individual medal at an Olympics or World Championships (atm, at least) so he’s treated like a hero by 1.4 billion people (at least, those who watch track and field). On another note, when do we find out who’s male and female athlete of the year? Isn’t it the 1st of December?! If so, fast your votes in everyone, I have already!

Its simple. Diamond Leagues should feature professional teams & not individuals competing for points hence trophy.... just like NCAA, IPL, football or baseball leagues. Trading/buying athletes between teams ensures the most talented get paid. New talent is scouted for. Teams can be based all over the world. We'll get to see 4 x 100 relay teams with say Tebogo, Lyles, Kishane, Simbine which will never happen under any other circumstance. Way better than the current ideas floating around suggesting fragmentation of track & field.

Track and Field is a lot harder to build a team around because of the nature of the sport. The NBA, NFL, or MLB are team sports, how well the team does depends on how well the athletes coordinate and work with each other. Sure you could have Nike make a super team for the 4x100 but the only athlete coordination is in the handoffs, and then its also less competitive if all the best players are on one team. Basketball and football have quarters, its one team against another, and the teams are constantly trading points. Outside of high school track and field, the meets are always several teams competing all at once, and points are one-offs. Also, points are scored far differently. Cross country is a team sport, but Track and Field is a sport of individual competition, changing that would make it worse for the athletes, even if it's better for audience retention.

I'm here commenting again. Many of the people 'trying' to save the sport do not understand marketing and the issue isn't simply throwing money at the sport. The reason Bolt raised the bar was due to his charisma and he brought his personality to the track. Jamaicans were always fast, you can go back to 1948 Olympics in the 400m, but Bolt is the first to show the world the raw spirit of Jamaicans, their free spirit, determination, flair, entertainment, and belief bottled up in how he presented himself to the public. The world gravitated to that raw authenticity. So my point is, it's about the authenticity of the athletes and marketing the athletes by simply giving them exposure and creating an avenue to diaplay that in an accessible product.
@TheSomethingnew1
@TheSomethingnew1 Ай бұрын
This has nothing to do with field sports. Bolt raised the bar because he’s an outlier. Aside from that, we’re talking about making the sport more lucrative so that people outside of the big names can actually pay their bills. Bolt was an anomaly but didn’t advance the business side of Track. He was fun to watch and is a house hold name, but that’s it. Michael is at least trying.
@alicksasylum
@alicksasylum Ай бұрын
Bolt was a 'one off' and came when the sport needed a boost. Bolt almost single handedly did what no one else has ever done for the sport. He was a champion but also had charisma. People who knew nothing about the sport were drawn to Bolt because as the undisputed number one, he brought fun, unlike the days of USA dominance when the guys behaved more like heavyweight boxers when waiting at the blocks.

I'd add that television in the USA likes that, too, plus he was in short races (allows for advertising surrounding the races), and lots of very 'dynamic' announcers on the broadcasts. I just don't go out of my wat to watch them. I was a sprinter in school so I'm attracted to that aspect of the sport. As a viewing product, how long can an event be if you eliminate the field events? Will it be just an hour? Can you fill two hours of programming if you just have the sprints? If you get rid of the field, do you need to get rid of the heptathlon? A best athlete event is always a good event and it wouldn't have so many competitors that it would take too much time. I think they have to be included.

Biggie here is going to be getting folks to these meets, so keep the costs low and the locations accessible; if the 3-day meet in Los Angeles is a UCLA I won't go, its just a horrific drive to-and-from that place; maybe try Mt. SAC with its new track surfaces?. Good idea to start with some shorter track events but they will eventually have to expand the event offerings. I noticed the one in Los Angeles is a three day event, so maybe some field events on 'day two'? Also put the shot and discus rings closer to the middle area of the infield to increase visibility (maybe next to a straight-away). Back in the late-1970s/early-1980s there used to be 'field events only' meets in a few locations around the USA. There was one in Southern California at Cal State Long Beach I use to go watch. All the key areas were grouped together at one end on the track (both inside and outside the curve) with implement landing areas away from the crowds (obvious safety reasons). But all the athletes were in the same area, leaderboards showed who was up next so you could easily move between events to see jumpers/throwers in action. Pretty cool way to do it. I even saw John Powell set a discus world record at one of them.

I'll start out by saying I'm old. I remember the heydays of T&F in the '80s-early 2000s. I initially got sucked into T&F because my older brother threw shot and discus and I got dragged to his meets. I was a huge fan of Michael Johnson's. So to see him taking cheap shots at field events for a soundbite to promote his league is disappointing. The problem isn't the worldwide popularity of T&F - it's the decline in the US that needs to be addressed and all I can say to him is - good luck trying to fix the problem with multi-day events. If you really think people don't have the attention span to watch 12 jumpers/throwers for 2 hours, then WTH would you think people want to pay money to watch 2 days of running? What am I missing? If you live in a big city do you really want to spend 2 hours commuting both ways to a 2 hour track meet 2 days in a row? And how much are the tickets? Is that a bundle package or do you buy each day separately? If it's the latter the 2nd day easily outsells the first day. I'm sure they'll refine GTS as it goes along, but the reality is - Americans just don't care that much in non-Olympic years. There's far too many other sports in the US market to compete with.

Create it and they will come only works if they know when and where to come too. I search hi and lo to be able to find track event that I know are going on. The best I can do is find highlights of the event after the fact.

T Davis sounds so lame and shady for the diss on Michael Johnson…she’s dead wrong! Track and Field do not have to be together…most fans either look at one or the other! A few folks who like track look at long jump, maybe…but not much else. There is no rule that they should go together, and I do not think anything is wrong with field…it’s just that the two are not the same and there clearly isn’t much public demand. So, I believe having the fastest of the fastest competing is an exciting idea that should generate more revenue and views. Meanwhile, I feel it would be great to see the best jumpers, throwers, etc., in separate sessions could be exciting, as well! As it stands today, we rarely get to see all the field rounds, anyhow, and it would be nice to see the entire field sessions.

It's easily possible to slot one field event at a time into a televised track meet and fit the product that GST is promoting. However, athletes would need to understand that their attempts run to the meet director's schedule, not their own. When it's time to perform, there is no time for them to still be preparing.

I think he meant that they need more money for athletes that isnt directly tied to sponsorships, something similar to the NBA/NFL but for Track, i think you're right about why he says he can't "save" the field events. Theres a reason field events are essentially just filler content so the olympics always has something for the broadcasters to put inbetween their advertisements.

I think he is trying to get more money for more athletes who can raise their level to top level performances. he knows track so he is focusing on track. maybe he could have used a better choice of words though, since right now his statements are being picked apart, but think about it - people are talking a bit more about it as a result. Keep talking Michael. Follow your vision.

Most people have no idea who the winners of the long jump were in Paris. Like swimming its the blue ribbon 100 metres that determines the fastest. For any other event to get any oxygen requires a GOAT like DuPlantis in the pole vault. This has been the case for at least 50 years

Field events need to take advantage of what running can’t: the audience can be close to the athletes competing. I would love to see a small venue that showcased things like high jump and pole vault which are so insanely cool to view in person. Field should create its own league

I like Grand Slam because it will make the diamond league inc prize pools to compete, but ultimately I feel that the diamond league coupled with world athletics events is the best display of the sport. The diamond league does a great job of using field events to fill the gaps between running events-which grand slam will never be able to do. I also firmly believe that everyone has a niche in this sport and that isn’t possible if you take the field events away.

they did Remove from the Olympics the Heptathlon a cross country Run/track run of same distance depending on country hosting and Olympics rules changes in the 2000's, Swim, Shoot, Horse jump racing for the 4 events all becuse a few people in the 2008 Bejing were dying in the horse events becuse the Jump portion they were not making with the required jump with the required safety to the event having the top bar be a breakaway for riders horses not clearing the top bar, building the courses during the Olympics like Elite strictly jumping horse racers only without the safety needed as per event. This is why now the only events with a horse are dumb like the Dressage events that go based on a score or a show jumping where they go on a score and inspect for the proper safety first and if the course is missing this like in Rio, the show jumping is ban or forced to be fixed by the hed organization for Jumping events.

Personally, I enjoy both track and field events. I love the women's high jump more than any track event. The field events do take hours to peak and that time frame is at odds with track events. To give field events their deserved attention a separate event is required. So, let's take GST off the hook. Is it not possible for each field event to have a preliminary heat to qualify for a final that would involve the top 5 or 6 athletes going for a certain number of attempts? Secondly, the events happen in pairs - say, male high jump and female high jump - and viewers can click back and forth between two different events or watch them both on a split screen setting - the idea is the viewer has control over which event they want to see first and they can skip events if they want. So, a non-linear programming style as opposed to the linear programming of track events. There is definitely a fanbase. Ultimately, it's not that complicated.

The true issue lies in the fact that the sport is so genetics-based. The same nations continue to win the same titles year on year. Athletics just so happens to be one of those sports where the driving factor in whether or not you have a shot at winning or not is down to your genetics, there’s very little that skill can offer, so as a result of that, the same names and the same nations win, year on year, it becomes predictable and there’s rarely any excitement or anticipation for who could win

I do not pay attention to the people that win let alone compete. I love running. I love watching and actually running. I only know the most populace names that drop around the webage. In other words, fix it or don't. I think it would be fun to watch consistent running meets streamed regularly in full. I think that would mix up the competitors by allowing many different individuals to rise that are often ignored.

Track & Field athletes and fans care about Track & Field. The general public however, doesn't care about field events. The idea of "only the fastest" sounds like a solid plan for track meets/events, but it'll definitely hurt the field events for sure. Maybe the javelin, shot, and disc can survive as the general public might get into seeing things thrown far, but hj, lj, tj, might be in trouble. Just a thought.

This is how you "save" Track and Field: Field events on Saturday & Track events on Sunday OR vice versa. NOTHING is more annoying as a T & F fan, than having field events during track races. Also the TV coverage of distance events needs to change. They got to stop showing 3 laps in the 5000, then go to commercial break, then come back and show field events, {of which the vast majority of attempts are FOULS} then all of a sudden Kara comes back on and there's 2 laps to go. Gee, thanks a million !! I missed laps 4 through 10 !!

Polevaulting has saved itself. Let’s face it, watching pole vault live is pretty tedious. It takes longer than any other event, and only has brief seconds of action. It’s great to watch the highlights, though. What a lot of people don’t realize is that it has become its own thing. You can get street vaults in places like Michigan, Key West, Charlotte, and all over the country. No other events, justpolevault. The Masters polevault community is thriving. They are polevault gyms all over the country. Pole vaulting doesn’t need to be saved.

I, for one, have had enough of watching the same athletes lining up for the same event time after time. As all of the athletes want to win and reach the moon (or jump over it) it's always an inspiration to watch the efforts of exceptional athletes (who I don't know) in their efforts in competing with one of our super-heroes. I imagine that more in the idea of local teams competing with each other, it would be incredibly interesting (for me) to pit, say, Bensonhurst athletes in competition with Bay Ridge athletes and have a team of professionals filling out the field. I'd come to watch my local hero and learn just how wonderful my rival-hero also is.

I think what he’s trying to say in no uncertain terms can be boiled down to “track” and “field”. Each competitor regardless of the format requires either a lane on a track, or spot on a field. Right there, track athletes require a lane, ON a track. That’s a defined and accounted for space that can accommodate many individuals. A field athlete requires a spot on a field, which depending on the discipline makes multiple athletes simultaneously performing all but impossible. The spectacle isn’t as confined and concentrated. They would have to go one at a time and imagine running a 100m like that. Also, only the very best is a spectacle in field sports, whereas the best competing amongst their peers is expressed amid competition in track. CrossFit is a good demonstration of the space needed and the attention division. Think of a relay race. Imagine when the gun started all 4 legs started running at the same time as a time trial. Who could easily determine which team won that race? I think that’s his point. Imagine watching 5 people high jump, long jump, triple jump or shot put all at once. The Attention division equation can’t be solved is what I think he’s getting at.

It’s best known for a creepy Opening Ceremony, a suspicious amount of world records and two male boxers getting gold medals for beating up women because the IOC won’t do a simple cheek swab sex test. I’m not even bothering with the Olympics from now. I’ll check out the other events on the athletics calendar. Edit; and I forgot the absence of Jamaicans in the women’s 100.

The solución is simple. Just mike in the Olympiques have a géographie team. Texas aginst California and New York for exsample. Provide weighted points per event. I want to see the shot put if it is the last event and he who wins the shot put wins the team title. Limit the contest to an hour per format with the clock running. For example 5 throws. Side by side. 20; second between puts with a shot clock. Two teams only can compete. That is television friendly. Where you were born determines the team one is on. Pick the number of events on can fit into an hour. The events each week do not have to be the same but both yeams must compete in the same events. The net work that has the rights to the broadcast can pick the order of the events. Which events are chosen any given match is for you and Johnson to figure out Nostradamus. But unlike the Olympics the contestants need to be, for example Paris vs Berlin. Berlin vs Athens... The smaller the politicsl unit the better it will be for athletics. Then we will find out answers to the age old question as to which city or state in any given nation wins. In addition I would add one combate sport to the mix. Take a poll of such a format. People will want to see exactly why I propose.

All the networks have to do is cover these events better and get their heads out out of their asses! Track & Field is exactly what the title says. Leave it alone, in truth the Asians and Europeans call it the same thing Track & Field, however the cover it differently . The real issue is pay these people better and increase the bonuses along with advertising revenue, learn to focus on the top 3 in each event and the top 3 finishers worldwide!
