As someone who appreciates and understands turbochargers and development. Turbosmart is the only aftermarket turbo supplier in Australia (that I have seen) who produces their own compressor performance map for their product. I have checked this, and they are correct. Which means everything from Mesh metrics, to their output parameters and engineering is correct. They really need to leverage the fact that they provide compressor performance maps! Because all the other guys (apart from the largest garret, borg etc) wouldn't have a clue of their products performance range or design limits. 👍

Doing some math and trying to make an equal jump between sizes, you could probably have a set of roughly 6 turbo families to cover everyone, maybe 7. 300hp, 400hp, 550hp, 700hp, 900hp, 1200hp, and optionally a 1600hp capable turbo. That should cover everything from a 1.0L to an 9.0L engine and 6500-12000+rpm depending on the hot side. Especially if you could mix and match hot and cold sides a few sizes up or down for different applications. One example that comes to mind is a 550 hot side with the 300hp or 400hp cold side for something like a roll race-only superbike. Sure, it's only an 0.75 to 1.4L engine, but they rev literally twice as high as any comparable or near-comparable car engine, so the flow is roughly equal to 2x the displacement for cars. The exact opposite example would be matching a 700hp hot side with a 550 or 400 cold side for something like a 3.5-4.5L 6-cylinder that you just DON'T need to make excessive power on. Or two turbos with a 400hot/300cold. Or twin turbos with 550hot/400cold for a V8 application that doesn't need 1000hp plus worth of forced induction potential. I might just be entirely ignorant on the subject of matching cold to hot side and how much overhead (or lack thereof) with the former is required for a system to even be functional, but still, you guys get the idea, especially with my generalized sizing thing.
@danielwitham1791Ай бұрын
Agreed to an extent except for the not needing 1k hp or more in V8 applications. I love my twin turbo 6.3L V8 with twin 88mm turbos. They get pushed to 80%+ when I can get all the engine can hold to the track. I ran out of turbo using 66mm turbo's that once scared the crap out of me on gate pressure making 700hp. Now I have bigger turbos with 5 settings from 750-1600hp at the wheels and can't get enough of that beast at high RPM and high boost now I'm used to the power 🎉 I do love my tiny fast spool turbo on my RB30 swapped holden Torana. 400hp from 2700rpm and 600hp at 3500rpm is plenty in that light car on the street and I was extremely happy to down size with a larger hot side and smaller cold side custom built Garrett for the least possible lag. It was dangerous and sucked when it had far more power that all came on at 4,800+rpm.
@Drunken_HamsterАй бұрын
@@danielwitham1791 If your V8 was 4.6-5.2 you might think a little different, but yeah with a 6.3 there plenty of ass there to push those big snails. For engines in the 2.3-4.5-ish liter range I feel like I'd absolutely prefer peak response with a maximum output of about 200whp per liter.

Thanks for the video HPA, Ive been interested in these since they came out but tbh I feel a bit like they havnt taken it too seriously. The turbosmart website doesnt show all the models and variants and finding out infomation is difficult. For example Im keen on the 6870 large frame but it appears to be only offered in 0.96 in the t4, what if I want to put a larger rear housing in the future say 1.20 or similar. Same goes with say the 6870 small frame and its rear housings, HPT do a t3 1.10 housing but its not listed on turbosmart website either. As well as by now I would have expected alot more dyno testing videos but only a few. Obviously they are selling them all and dont need to be serious Im guessing. Also FYI turbosmart, its absolutley shit that customers cant just come into your Sydney shop and buy products / find out more info on these things.
@Turbosmart_Matt29 күн бұрын
@najstephy5565 Absolutely you are on point with the range on the website not being complete yet, that's not because we haven't taken it seriously, it's more a matter of we are still working on new sizes from a design, supply chain (and to be completely honest a cashflow) point of view. I think I mentioned it in the video, but each AR is a new design, which requires a new tool, which has a lead time, then there is machining, testing, validating etc - all of that takes time and money. Trust me, I wish we had unlimited housings at our disposal right away - what did pantene say? - it won't happen overnight, but it will happen....
@Godzillajz29 күн бұрын
@Turbosmart_Matt These were released 12 months ago to only have 1 or two rear housings available is a let down for people seriously looking to upgrade when garret and precision have multiple offerings. We understand Turbosmart design is slightly modified from HPT but if he already has them why are we waiting. It is extremely hard to believe cash flow is a factor in this, we also understand that there maybe issues from HPT themselves in supplying the housings and we sincerely hope you guys will somehow be able to manufacture some of the components if not all here in the future to potentially assist with that. I get your in the middle but I feel najstephy pain man even we can't just roll up and buy direct is not good. Rang up was told to go to Mtq, absolute worst service ever I walked out never again. Loyal to the brand and run fpr, bov and wastegate but this entry into Turbochargers could have been handled better. Optimistically pessimistic about the future. Cheers

Love the tech that gets developed. The brushing off of casting the turbos over seas is weird to me. It then falls to “well we don’t have a foundry in the US so may as well assemble overseas too.” Well, I get it, but I bet the US has a foundry. It’s the union cost you’re avoiding. This is the setup that is counterintuitive to the idea of US jobs. Unions want high pay but companies will just move the job over seas. Then the job is already there so why not just conveniently give them more jobs? Hey, it may even be done better AND cheaper. It’s just a shame that a month long boat ride is required to get that. It’ll be interesting if the tariffs involve this sector.

I wanna know how they compare to Borg and Holset. Given what I've seen underground guys do with old Holsets and the raw numbers of Borg (both BB and JB borgs), those are my gold standards, both for performance and longevity, especially over Garrett which have much smaller and weaker bearing sections compared to Borg. Nevermind that I heard a rumor that Garrett copied the borg EFR geometries for their G series, but then made them slightly worse somehow AND then went ahead and overrated them compared to their actual flow performance per pound of air.

Turbosmart, how is it that your CFD package outputs a carbon copy of my design of compressor and turbine aero? Fuck, even the fins on the bearing housing a a knockoff of my design. The tool that supplies your turbos most likely cannot explain why they are shaped that way for an engineering purpose. Granted, it is artistic but sometimes form meets function. I agree, the Chinese do make the best copies. Hi. Dan Barlog here. I am The engineering director behind Precision Turbo and Engine for over 25 years now. This video mentioned Harry. Great "big picture idea guy". The best general statement I can endorse. God, I love a challenge but wish this guy offered more of one. If turbochargers improve, I'm down for any challenge. Give me a novel design to compete against! Turbosmart, if you would like to subcontract the real deal instead of a cheap China knock-off, give us a ring. If not, give me a ring anyway. I'd like to hear about your "innovative CFD", advanced computing power, and material science. I'd then like to introduce some knowledge into your public statements. Do you even realize you are working with a 12 year old copy of PTE designs? Yes. It will out-perform the best Garrett has today but kinda of stale if you want to be a leader of the performance turbocharger market. If would like to learn about my antiquated design approach to the products that you are selling and degrading today, give me a call. I can tell you my latest story of how my designs are outperforming multiple doctorate aerodynamicists and their $3mil cluster running ANSYS within the Wabtec turbocharger group. As I said, I love a challenge. Harry knew this. I believe that is why he sold the company. He said himself he couldn't compete with my ideas and wanted a change. I really think that he sold the company to grow ideas that were beyond the current understanding of PTE. I give tremendous respect for that forward thinking.
