“I think it’s a terrible thing to be slaughtered in a war. But to be eviscerated, and not have anybody even notice your passing, is particularly haunting to me. @ mrlampp That quote was worth highlighting. I’m not going to forget Zelinsky saying “The fight is here. I need ammunition, not a ride” anytime soon, either. But I’m reminded of a Nick Cave lyric when I think of all the asshats who didn’t see Putin as enough of a threat to begin with, like the last American pres… “if you’re gonna dine with them cannibals darling, sooner or later you’re going to get eaten”… we can only hope.

I believe in saving lives. After you're dead it's too late and the west has failed. UKRAINE NEEDS REAL HELP NOW. This virtue signaling garbage just helps people feel better about letting people get murdered. I believe in counting the dead though. I still do not know how many Iraqi, Syrian, or Yemenese or Palestinian civilians were murdered. And no one knows how many Ukrainians or Russians. Wonder if we ever will. Russians probably not. @alimos76harrington62 2 жыл бұрын
@@owenmersk4626 I think it is also that we associate Europe with peace (ironic considering where WW1/2 started, Yugoslavia break down, NI) and democracy and the external opinion of the Middle East and Africa is that civil war is a near constant in one area or another, with countries essentially interchangeable, so there is a kind of emotional exhaustion. The cities being bombed in Ukraine are more familiar to the West in style and structure so it's somehow more shocking to be occuring there. I am not saying this is right in any way at all but I think it's the shock that this could happen in "civilised" Europe that makes the news, whereas many in the West would struggle to find Israel or Nigeria on a map let alone Yemen or Palestine.

@@alimos76harrington62 There may truth in what you say. However this is such a complicated situation in terms of what other countries are really allowed to do without starting WWIII--that's what everyone is afraid of and why countries and Ukrainian people have to get creative and use their ingenuity to fend for themselves with the help they get through other countries. You might be right esp w the Rohinga situation. It seems so hopeless, millions of homeless people going back and forth from one country to another and neither wanting them. I am wondering if anyone really knows what to do. Here there are two things to do. Resist. Remove Putin.
@alimos76harrington62
@alimos76harrington62 2 жыл бұрын
@@jschuler53 sadly I agree. Sanctions are a deterrent but Putin has committed the error of placing himself at the centre of this action and so failure is not an option for him. He sees his own people as disposable for the greater aim of raising Russia up to be a world power even at the cost of Russians. Ironically, Russia has the natural resources and population size to be such a world power but he fears his people too much to be able to explore this opportunity. Against such a tyrant only force will prevail, anything else is just a sticking plaster over an infected wound. Remove him or beat him into submission. I fear though that we are pushing Russia into the arms of China.

The guy, as well as a lot of other real journalists, have a lot of courage to take on the risks. With so many "commentators" out there wearing the mask of "journalist" while spouting BS to make people afraid, true journalists take real risks. While overall most are at least relatively safe, there is actual risk and sadly some do end up giving their lives. I'm fairly certain they understand the gravity of that, and yet feel that transparency and knowledge are worth enough, perhaps even worth dying over if need be. There's a lot of honor in that, and getting back true information about the current situation in the war mobilizes many others around the world, even for little stuff. If it's just discourse, humanitarian aid, private donations, or public support, each of these are small contributions that could tip the balance and in consequence save many lives. I've always been pretty fond of Mr. Cooper - he's been doing this stuff for a long time, he's smart, funny, doesn't take himself too seriously, but knows when to put the pressure on when dealing with a BS'r. He's a solid journalist.

Thank you Anderson Cooper for covering the war in Ukraine, as ukrainian from Kharkiv who woke up at 5 AM from the sound of rocket strickes I admire reporters who are showing the real picture of the war. My native city is destroyed by russians, my mom and relatives are still in Kharkiv. We run away to save our children and have almost nothing to come back at. But we believe that we will win because it's our land, it's our country and we are fighting for nothing elce but freedom. It would be great to have more military help from US and NATO because right now our people are dying for a chance to be free from russia and to be a part of western world

I'm glad that there are still journalists who are able to emotionally engage with what they report on, even though they keep their professionalism intact to do their job. I think that's one of the vital differences that determine whether you become a Cooper, or a Hannity. Without empathic ability, you cannot show the humanity of reality. Your own mind won't tell you when your view has become devoid of humanity.

With all due respect to both these men (and I do have a lot of it for each of them, don’t get me wrong), I think it is crucial to show everything that happens in a war (any war) to as many people as possible. There is no dignity in what is happening, other than the simple acts of bravery and kindness shown by individuals. However, if more of those depravities that are left on the editing floor were shown to people, we wouldn’t rush to a new conflict so easily.
