THE MIDDLE CLASS IS DISAPPEARING:
A recent report just found that The total population of the middle class in “the U.S. has dropped from 61% in 1971 to 50% in 2021." It’s also said that “the average wealth of the middle 40% had dropped by 7%, or $27,000, since March of last year," which equates to the largest drop on record since the 2008 Great Financial Crisis.
Less than a year ago, Fortune also stated that the “middle class is bracing for its next financial blow,” and according to Yahoo, the former backbone of America is finally “at the end of an era,” with middle-class wealth having peaked in February of 2022.
HOWEVER, not everyone agrees, and depending on the data you look at, the middle class might not be shrinking in the way that you think:
According to the Brookings Institute, the middle class isn’t disappearing - it’s just INCREASING: As they say, the bottom 1/5th has 25% more income in 2007 than they did in 1979, when you account for “government transfers, the value of health insurance, and the decline in household size.”
They also found that the middle FIFTH increased by 37% throughout that same timeframe and that the middle-class TODAY is a LOT better off than the middle class of the 1970s, given the abundance of government programs and assistance.
As they say, “The middle class is not shrinking or becoming impoverished. Rather, changes in workers’ skills and employers’ demand for them, along with changes in families’ size and makeup, have caused the incomes of the well-off to climb much faster than the incomes of most Americans.”
A separate study also reported that, yes - the middle class is shrinking - but only because they’re moving into higher-income groups. From 1971 through 2021, the middle class shrunk as a disproportionate amount became “upper-class.”
It’s also true that, while the United States has the smallest middle class of similar nations…we also have the largest “affluent class” and “poverty class” - suggesting that, perhaps…people are either just getting richer, or they’re getting poorer.
So, overall, it does appear as though the middle class IS slowly disappearing - but the good news is that, according to the statistics, there’s now a greater likelihood of moving up into a HIGHER income bracket than at any other point in history.
That’s why, I think it’s so important to double down on your career skills, stay out of consumer debt, live below your means, invest consistently and, if you have the appetite for risk, possibly start that side hustle business you’ve always wanted to do.

What I thought middle class was growing up: owning a home, owning a car, and be able to afford savings for big expenses, able to eat out a few times a month, give modestly to charities or church, little to no debt, a domestic vacation every year and an international vacation every 3-5 years. Now that feels like luxury and completely out of reach.

not only do they easily take international vacations a few times a year, if they want to take a whole month somewhere they often can. We get big eyed responses when we mention to people we take a two week beach vacation in a rental house on the east coast .... most americans never get to do any of that ever. A 4 day Air bnb at the shore maybe, but never two weeks. Heres the kicker, they have cheap healthcare too !!!!@@deviouslaw

@@daveaglasgowit’s not that Americans can’t afford vacations, it’s that they prioritize having bigger houses and more stuff over spending on travel. It’s funny to me that people are considered better off because they don’t have kids, but the reason they don’t have kids is because they can’t afford to. Seems there needs to be some kind of modifier to this data. It’s like saying that homeless people are better off than middle class people because they have much better debt-to-income ratios since they don’t have a house. 😕

This place is always noisy and messes with my sleep, making my medical issue worse. With prices of everything going up, I cannot see a way out. I work, eat, sleep. I can't even afford to have a relationship. Living in the Bay Area is just stupid. I am the new middle class. I cannot qualify SSID from the state because I make to much according to them, can't get section 8/voucher to help me find a private place to live, don't have family and friends to move in with, I am basically S.O.o.L. I will probably forced to go bankrupt and them live with all the others in the Tenderloin.

The irony hit me when Graham recommended saving a substantial portion of one's income, Dude! I've fallen out of the middle class, I pay rent, I maintain a vehicle necessary for getting to work, and the only remaining way to save is by cutting the quality of food purchases (something that would impact my health & ability to work in the long term). Middle class means having disposable income; income the individual may spend or save as they please.

The strategies you provided for improving one's financial situation are practical and actionable. A wiseman once said: it’s not going to be “haves” and “have nots”, it’s going to be “have yachts and have nots.” Middle class is the worst class to be in, not holding enough assets to balance out inflation, and having just enough money for the government not to prioritize them. All this, after working hard at the jobs that really keep this country running. Back in the day you would be able to go to university, work at a restaurant to pay off college, get a job, get married, buy a car and a house, have kids all before 24 years old. Seems like a fantasy world now.

Well, I've gotten into a plethora of assets with $73k spread across stocks (options and futures) for the short term and Roth IRA, index funds, and ETFs, for the long term. I've been investing with help from a pro fund manager, Herman W Jonas who oversees my investments. Now I sit back and reap my dividends while I just reinvest at intervals.

I honestly think the middle class is disappearing because of loans. Middle class of people are so overextended. I live in Northern Canada and see it so often. I personally live on what most people consider low income for my area. I own a house drive a fairly newish vehicle. I spend smart.

Thanks to Inflation i think that the high income from 1967 of 100k or more is not what it is nowadays. Therefore i believe that you need other numbers for 2022 to stay in the classes then back in 1967. I would nearly double it. What did you think @Graham? But anyway it is a nice video👍🏻 Thank you.

I just saw you on Dave Ramsey, he recommended you, and your first video I see is telling me to get my credit rating as high as possible. I wonder why Dave didn't mention that when you were on. There's allot to agree here with the research, but building credit so you can take high value loans doesn't seem like building wealth for yourself. Investing I can agree with, but paying your money to other people so they can reinvest doesn't make sense. The value of the dollar is dropping, so take my dollars and pay it to someone who is going to upcharge that dollar when I pay it back?? 🤔

Depreciation is one of the best tax write offs ever I can't believe that is in the tax code. But what is even crazier is when you die your kids get a stepped up in value wiping out all the depreciation it is probably a big reason why there such wealth inequality in the country.
@GrahamStephan

Totally. Doesn't make much sense why there's that much of a stepped-up tax basis. The tax basis should remain the same if / when it eventually sells.

Agreed, the role of advisors can only be overlooked, but not denied. I remember in early 2020, during covid-outbreak, my portfolio worth around $300k took a slight fall, apparently due to the pandemic crash, at once I consulted an advisor in order to avoid panic-selling. As of today, my account has yielded big fat yields, and leverages on 7-figure, only cos I delegate my excesses right.

I enjoy my day to day market decisions being guided by a portfolio-coach, seeing that their entire skillset is built around going long and short at the same time both employing risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying off risk as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, coupled with the exclusive information/analysis they have, it's near impossible to not outperform, been using a portfolio-coach for over 2years+ and I've netted over $300k .

@@Lettogle109if you're refering to options I wouldn't have my advisor doing options either. Too high risk. Otherwise swing trading is easy. If your can make a pb&J sandwich you can buy a stock. The problem is the psychology of trading that gets people f'd up. That and not following your stop losses. I put $10k in Tesla in March 2020 and sold those shares in 2021 for $50k. I also burried $10k in 21 different holes in my back yard to make sure I extra diversified.
