Some may think that this is a case of a company with monopolistic intention, breaking into a regional market with ultra low prices or with great features at great value, then wiping out all competitors, including long established leaders, and finally raising the prices when there's no other manufacturer left. In reality, this is a case of a country with monopolistic intentions and seemingly unlimited resources, unfairly helping its car companies to break into the global market, with everything else unethical following that. How's China and its car companies able to do this? China's unlimited resources is an myth that its people are already suffering as a result of, with their government implementing ad-hoc laws so as to rob violators of their hard-earned money. China's cars are of poor long term quality, poor long term support and thus poor value-retention. Buyers of Chinese cars will reap what they sow.

We have owned five VWs since 1999. Three Golfs and two Tourans. Add the two Audi A4s we’ve also owned, and that’s seven VAG cars in 25 years. They were all either good or great. I seriously considered an iD4 this year when I was choosing my first EV. As well as the Audi Q4 etron. I drove them both. They were fine, if rather dull and ponderous to drive. Performance was sluggish, but the demonstrators were the older 204hp models to be fair. The Audi had decent enough infotainment, but the iD4 system was just awful. As were the haptic controls on the steering wheel. Then, I test drove the Highland Model 3, and the gap between it and the VAG EVs was ridiculous. As was the gap between the Tesla and other EVs I tested (BMW i4 and iX1, Nissan Ariya, Toyota bz4x, Smart #1, that’s all I can remember). With the lease costs of the iD4 being similar to the Model 3, and the Audi being maybe 30% more expensive than the Tesla, my choice was obvious.

I feel sorry for VW, but I feel worse for Toyota. They’re totally off in the weeds, chasing HFCV or HCEVs. H2 is troublesome to handle and much lower in energy density than gasoline. Distribution of H2, in either Crazy high pressure gas, or liquid (LH). Either form requires exotic metallurgy and trucking the stuff around is going to mean a lot more tanker trucks on the highways. In addition to this, filling stations will have to maintain larger volumes of H2 than gasoline to provide the same number of vehicles with equivalent ranges vs current stations. The transfer equipment (think gas pumps) will require a lot of maintenance and WHEN H2 leaks, you don’t want to be in the vicinity. Hydrogen is the leakiest gas on the periodic table. Required clearances in screwed connection, or machined surface interfaces, require perfection machining. I hope that Toyota figures this out before they go broke betting on success.

As we all know, to make a good EV you need a dedicated, purpose built factory. These factories cost a fortune and many years to plan and build, therefore require many, many years of production to break even. For this reason the course must have been set by VW and Toyota boards several decades ago when they continued to construct ICE factories and hid their heads in the sand on the coming EV disruption.
@waynerussell64012 ай бұрын
Tesla built one in 168 days for $2B that is the most efficient and largest in China. Within 3 years it pays for it's self in profits (New St Research). VW remodeled its Zwickau ICE factory into its largest BEV facility over three years at a cost of $1.3B as a blueprint of how to convert its 120 factories to EVs. But it has never achieved its 360k unit capacity, progressively closing shifts and with a throughput rate a third of Tesla Shanghai. No other VW factories now produce EVs in Germany and Audi is closing in Brussels - the first closure in 36 years. “With many of our pre-existing structures, processes and high costs, we are no longer competitive as the Volkswagen brand,” Thomas Schaefer Brand Manager.

Why does everyone focus on the ID4 when talking about Volkswagen in crisis? EV's are a play for the future. Most of their sales and all of their profits come from ICE vehicles. Volkswagen US sells the Atlas, Tiguan Taos Jetta Golf and those vehicles are 95% of their sales. So you really have to ask why no one is buying these models. GM and Ford for instance are funding their investments into future EVs using profits from their conventional and hybrid vehicles. While it's true that Volkswagen's EV efforts have had issues, It's the company's failure to maintain a competitive overall product line that is the real issue. The exact same thing is true of Stellantis and Nissan as well.

I recently test drove the VW ID.4 and it was a great car! Loved the size, design, power, and all but, the range was smaller: 285 mi, which lead me to a Model Y instead. The ID.3 and other VW EV's look great, they should stick with it and keep pushing through with all EV's, even though they'll have to downsize some, but can stay in the game. Not in China though.

The VW group have been for several years building cars that drive well of the showroom floor but have terrible long term reliability and very costly service /repair characteristics. Over time this erodes the loyal customer base who will cease to buy their products next time round regardless of whether they be EV or ICE. I waited **YEARS**, and dreamt of the VW ID.Buzz. And then, they released it in Canada with a range that is way too low, for an incredibly high price range. And *poof*, just like that, my goal of owning and travelling in a VW ID.Buzz is 100% gone. Currently, I travel and camp in my Orange Prius C. It's a tiny hatchback and yet I sleep and camp in it often, as I vacation and visit across Canada and the U.S. I really wanted to do this in a Buzz. VW has rendered that dream an impossibility. It's too bad they chose such a ludicrously low range on a car that is meant to be a 'lifestyle' vehicle. I'd almost thought it was a joke or a misprint when I read that the max range was 377kms. What a waste of effort on VWs part. Such a seemingly great vehicle with not enough range for me to really go anywhere with it. Do they so grossly misread the target market with other models? Ah well, time to find another dream vehicle to go camping across Canada and the U.S. in.

That's about how much some received in tax rebates alone for purchasing their EVs. If they hadn't been subsidized, who would bave bought them? I have other challenges than "choosing my EV ". I want an affordable vehicle that I can gas up and that I dont have to be forced and subsidized to purchase. EVs are for a niche, people who can afford them, let others pay for them and the required infrastructure and are true believers in them. Germany is burning more coal than ever to produce the power, great improvement. True believers simply ignore unwelcome realities. VW is going down hard due to senseless mandates for fleet emissions and non existent demand for their EVs. If everyone wanted EVs, they would have taken the market by storm without the mandates.

They underestimated Tesla and the Chinese automaker and they will pay the price becoming a lot smaller than they used to be. It´s just the way technological challenges happen. For the smaller legacy automakers, most of them will disappear. 2. Chinese EVs are highly subsidized (all EV around the world are, regardless of their origin). At some point those subsidies will disappear or significantly reduced giving change to legacies to hold some market share. 3. It’s difficult to keep up with all of the improvements that Tesla makes, and they are driven by a guy that isn’t afraid to tear it all down and start from scratch if he thinks there’s a better way. Save VW? Intelligent people want to save the planet and save money at the same time. That is called electric cars. The automakers and the petroleum industry want to see status quo go on forever and to heck with the planet and the people on it. The US and European auto makers made their beds and now they have to sleep in them. If the automakers cared about the people and/or the planet they would take steps that show that. Even from a purely financial standpoint, it is the electric vehicles that make sense. China will rule the world in automotive industrial power (with Tesla being a hybrid of US and Chinese industry). But the ICE automakers have nobody to blame other than themselves. Kodak invented the digital camera. But they were worried about their film sales. So they did not pursue it with effort until it was too late. Now Kodak has gone from $11 billion in 2005 to 1.2 million in 2022 (about ten thousand times less money). The ICE car industry is doing its best to replicate the path of Kodak.
