@@LynnRPerry The problem is the thinking that the politicians back then and now were ever telling the truth. They have been lying about this program from day one. There isn't some sort of lockbox of money that is being properly invested along with your lifespan. What is taken in is then spent. It is a tax, and an eventual expenditure based on conditions. She would likely be far wealthier if her own money was invested, but special interest groups have made Social Security into the third rail of politics. It is not sustainable any longer. At this point we are robbing young people in the form of tax, and they will not recieve the same benefit. The program needs to be altered and eventually abolished or replaced with a different mechanism if in fact we want to ensure that people have money when they no longer want to work. The big point everyone is missing in this conversation is, when the government sets a tax rate that high, at 90%, is does not expect to capture the money, instead they hope to deter people from hoarding the money, and instead reinvest the money, pay employees more, give them healthcare, pensions, etc. It’s like taxes on cigarettes, they aren’t hoping to collect the money, they are hoping to deter people from smoking, which has worked.

@paidinfull872 ай бұрын
Except taxing at 90% and above $3M won’t encourage hiring, more pay, pensions etc. People will either not work as much or find ways to get under that $3M mark (ie negotiating pay via equity, which defers the tax to time of sale etc) because there’s little incentive to earn beyond that. Within the current fiat money system, you lose money by “hoarding” it via inflation. To fix the problems within the middle class today we need sound fiscal and monetary policy, they are completely out of control. The US had much more sound environment on both back then, a gold standard, spending within the governments means etc.

When in reality the fiscal and monetary environment of the 50s was WAY different than today and likely contributed to more people having success rather than just the tax rates. So for 90% tax rates to work, you’d probably have to revert back to those old fiscal and monetary policies to recreate a larger middle class. I would be in favour of that if it brought a more sane fiscal and monetary policy that’s not the QE insanity we’ve had for decades which has destroyed the middle and lower class. Instead that’s not the conversation, he’s just arguing for more government overreach to fix the problem they created in the first place

@garrettlink909029 күн бұрын
@ThePrayinmantiz Now i want to stress. Im not saying poverty has no impact, but its correlation to crime is nowhere near straightforward. There are 7 drivers that universally correlate to more crime across all demographics and sub-demographics within demographics. Age, race, income, education level, etc. They also hold true when looking at each individual felony 1. Gender, specifically males. The only exception to this correlate is that men commit abuse against dependents in their care at a much lower rate compared to women. Otherwise, they commit every crime at high rates. 2. Fatherlessness, across demographics Fatherlessness correlates to more crime. 3. Unmarried Men 4. Education. Specifically, high school dropouts 5. Age. 15-25 is the crime spree age 6. Substance abuse 7. Social contagion A.K.A peer pressure. This is a correlation that isn't exclusive to crime, but pretty much every behavior. For example, if a non-smoker starts hanging out with 6 smokers regularly, he is more likely to start smoking than he is to remain a non-smoker.

I'm sorry you missed it. May be you should watch it again. If taxes where 100% or 0% both would be catastrophic. Therefore, the answer can't be one or the other but some combination of the two. I'd argue that taxes right now are too low for those making Millions of dollars and the government, which runs a deficit every year (you are concerned about the deficit, yes, PBD?) would be better spent instead of borrowing from the likes of China. 20:33 So, Sam made a lot of good argument, and what do you do, revert right back to the black and white thinking. Why do people always bring up the 50's and 60's as a baseline without context? WWII ended in 1945. Most of the industrialized world had their productive infrastructure severely damaged. The one country that did not was the US. The industrial capability of the US increased significantly during the war. Once the war was over the factories transitioned to consumer goods rather than military hardware. Since the US had massive industrial capability compared to other countries it was effectively "the only game in town" for a lot of things. This allowed US companies to pay historically high labor costs and still be profitable. That's why the middle class flourished in the US during the couple decades following that war - not taxes or unions. No one actually paid the 90+% tax rate either. It only existed on paper but not in practice. However, other countries did rebuild their infrastructure and within 15 to 20 years we started to see global competition for goods again, which meant that US production couldn't dictate the market and afford to pay exaggerated labor costs any more. No one uses the 1920's or 1930's as a baseline for "how things used to be" despite the fact that far more of US history is similar to that time frame. No, people want to use the period of the biggest boom to ever exist in the country as the baseline instead of something more reasonable like a long term average.

First off, the government constantly saves capitalism from collapse because of greed and deregulation and nefarious business actions. In fact true unregulated lassai faire capitalism can't even exist without turning into Mad Max in a week. The government issues the currency so it can mismanage money in the sense it can run a deficit. It really doesn't matter, as long as you keep inflation in check. The way to do that is to spend huge money on infrastructure projects, green, new modes of travel, make those things hi tech with good paying jobs, the economy would explode and also serve the population while creating massive tax revenue to pay it back. the problem is the government is owned by the capitalists, and it bails Wall street out but not main street, that being us.

I work in government as a healthcare provider. I waste ZERO time arguing with insurance companies to cover treatments, but I also am not presured to tack on as many treatments and expenses to my patients as I have been in private practice. In private practice I have literally be told, "you aren't ordering enough braces for patients" because they want the patient to pay, even for something I deem unneccessary. I also was told to spred out visits and only pick ONE thing to cover. Now, in government, I can see as much as I am comfortable with so my patients dont have to make several visits. I also put in my plans for patients to just call my clinic if they are getting worse with physical therapy and I will order an MRI. In private practice I would eventually get fired for passing up on forcing another visit that can be billed. Government can be much more efficient and cheaper overall in medicine because the decisions I make on patient care are in no way incentivised by racking up as many charges as possible. I am only incentivised to do what I think is medically neccessary for my patients.

The private sector already doesn't do it better... 401k was the answer and it is at the whim of the stock market, and sometimes just disappear from the business that forms it. wealth inequality is from wealth in company owners changing their policies of treating their employees right. Until 2000, employees were paid well, they got stocks from companies, one person didn't do the job of 4, and people lived better... Corporations can deduct various business expenses to reduce taxable income, including salaries, rent, utilities, interest on loans, professional fees, insurance, and depreciation of assets. Other deductible costs include research and development, bad debts, employee benefits, and business-related meals and travel. A 90% marginal tax rate would incentivize businesses to reinvest profits into deductible expenses rather than hoard cash or use it for financial instruments. Spending money on legitimate business needs reduces taxable income, lowering the amount subject to high tax rates. This strategy helps businesses keep more of their earnings while staying compliant with tax laws. They are incentivized to hire more employees if they can offset the cost of those hires with tax deductions.

I can relate to the $40 hummer part. I worked on aircraft in the Marines and we were paying $10+ for individual washers that you could buy at the hardware store for 7 or 8 cents. Military spending is so wasteful that entire industries have popped up to cash in on it that wouldn't be able to exist if the government used even a little bit of common sense when it came to spending. There's also an incentive for units to overspend their budget or risk having it cut going forward. When we needed new tools and ground support equipment, our unit was buying dozens of flat screen TV's. I only saw 1 or 2 of those TV's get hung up at the squadron while the rest grew legs and walked away, probably to officer housing.

This inflation of these prices and parts is only possible because these expenses are subsidized by taxpayers. The same thing happens with college and Medicare/Medicaid. Yes the GI bill and Medicare is a great service but this subsidized spending is the reason why tuition is 2000+ and hospital bills are life changing expenses. It’s not that the services don’t produce noticeable beneficial results. It’s that the spending is inflated and easily abused by those in power or those with enough wealth and influence to abuse these things.

Well there won’t be equality, as well, because people have different levels of intelligence, have different level of skill, etc. I think a major way to make equality, though, or basically creating greater prosperity, would be making economics and business a basic class in our schools, starting in, say, grade 5 and up. Make it mandatory, right through to grade 12. Teach our kids to become a welder, or mechanic, plumber, electrician, accountant, dentist, etc., and then to start their own business. Teach them about getting loans for starting a business, teach them about fixed or variable interest rates, teach them that by starting their own corporation, they will get to pay less taxes than, say, a teacher or nurse would pay. My wife is a nurse, and her taxes come off of her paycheque automatically, and it’s 30-40% (depending how much she earns annually, how much OT she works). I have a corporation, and have excellent accountants, and make way more money than my wife while paying less taxes.

@@tonedowneNo, actually, the government is not better at effectively spending money to provide public services or utilities either. The whole point is thats what they are supremely bad at doing. And of course, any temporary benefits will be seen as 'proof' that it works, while all the detrimental effects take some time to come to fruition, and they'll claim it's entirely the fault of 'money grubbing companies' once again.
