Wes, You are right in saying "It Wasn't Designed For This". That's a light materials bucket you've got there. The good news is that the soil in your area isn't rocky at all and seems to be easily dug up. I'm watching this on Thanksgiving morning, and I was planning on taking a morning nap of about an hour and a half then a shower before I go out to a friend's for a big feast, then I came across this video. You cut into my nap time, Wes, by about thirty minutes. Now I'm out of time too.

I put in over 700' of water line and electrical conduit this past summer/fall and couldn't have done it without the help of my two adult sons. Looks like you are well on the way to having a pretty good helper yourself in a few more years. Major cuteness overload btw... lol. They are fun to work with and be around when they become young adults and the relationship becomes a strong friendship as well as a strong family tie.

This video encouraged me to use my Kubota M4900 to dig a trench for a waterline I have been wanting to install to have water available close to my sawmill. Our soil is mainly iron ore and clay with very few rocks. It is normally very difficult to do any digging in it but is easier at this time of year. I did have plenty of access to the route for the waterline so I decided to give it a try. Our freeze line is about 8" to 10" deep so the method works well. Thanks to your encouragement, the waterline is in and functional. Thanks!

You did ok Wes but I'm not sure you would have gotten that pipe out of the ground without your "helper". I also noticed he was helping you level a spot by throwing some dirt back in the ditch at one point. 😆Love watching you and the little man work together - your teaching him well. Happy Thanksgiving to you and the family.

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving! Appreciate the project and would love to get water out to by animals. Being in Wisconsin, that has to be under 48" and I am not too keen about drilling the hole in my foundation to get it out, too. Anyway, I digress. As you can imagine, we can get cold. Like, polar vortex cold. I do not use a heat lamp in the coop. When we originally got chickens, we were paranoid about the cold and actually got a breed that was a little more cold hardy (Brahmas). We have since moved on to many other traditional breeds and all are fine in the cold as long as you give them a place with good ventilation that is out of the wind. There was a formula that we built the coop to in order to maximize their ability to generate heat in the coop (x amount of sq. ft. per bird - don't recall what it was, but internet...) and that is it. I did run a cord there for their heated water (kept in the chicken run) and we tried a light one winter to stimulate egg production, but I consider that a fail. Anyway, I would not recommend the heat lamp. My 2 cents. Take care!

I'm from Kansas, so down to Zero is a given every winter. Folks never used a heat lamp nor did I for my adult chickens. Just provided them a wind break and a coop for roasting. Never tried a light for winter eggs. I always figured that 6-8 week break the hens took was good for them. I kept my hens until they died of old age and all were still pretty good layers even at 5-6 years old.

Yes I have used the tractor bucket many times to dig ditches, beats the hell out of a shovel as long as you do not have to go to deep for freezing and it does not work on rocky ground, as you saw even problems with roots but hey it got the job done and nobody will know the difference !!! We have to learn to worker smarter and not harder !!! Good job !!!

Well done Wes...the tractor sure made short work of getting the water pipe installed! Don't know if you've thought about it but do you have an anti-siphon valve at the beginning of your water feed? Depending on where your feed starts if your house is connected to the same line you might want to consider putting one at the feed point from the house to protect your drinking water. You should keep the water going to your utility out buildings like the shed or the coup separate from the homestead. Just as thought...keep up the good work!

Your videos are great. In our area, PVC lasts forever if you don't have tree roots uplifting it somewhere cracking it. Tree roots broke my PVC line from my house to the road in Alabama. I replaced it with copper. However, we had a quarter mile of PVC from the house to a spring that never gave a problem in 20 years when we switched to city water. At my house here in Georgia, my PVC that is above ground froze at the el. I had to replace that section with a heavy duty rubber garden hose. I hope y'all had a Happy Thanksgiving. Linda and I tried something different this year and ate at the Old Tymes in Warner Robins. Mmm-mmm, good, but the waiting line ran out into the parking lot, LOL!

They should be all set without a heat lamp as long as you don't have chicks. We raise between 20 and 30 here in Northern New Hampshire where winters can get down into the -30s and we don't run one in our 10x10 coop and they've been plenty warm. An old hat had told us we didn't need one and that heat lamps were only good for making fire roasted chickens. We were a little suspicious of it at first, but going on 9yrs now and no issues with them not having a heat lamp.

I have to agree with you. I once lived in Alabama about 100 miles to the north and far to the west of where Wes lives. We kept 50 While Leghorn laying hens in a coop made like a pole house but with no sides, just a tin roof. The sides were open chicken wire. I never heated the hens, even in the coldest weather, and they always did well. We had a pair of Peking ducks also that begged to swim even when the water was frozen. They really raised a fuss until I broke the ice on their little swimming pool for them to swim. They were really happy after they dove into the ice water.

10 inches is not very deep for a pipe. I think 24 inches is more standard. And my dad who was in the tractor business for over 50 years says always keep a heavy attachment on the three-point whenever using the loader bucket! It drastically increases traction and stability.

Tom, it most likely will never freeze except maybe at the el joints above ground. Those are easily fixed if they freeze and just as easily replaced with material that won't freeze. I replaced mine with heavy duty rubber garden hose which has lasted many years without bursting. It just expands if frozen then thaws quickly.

Hello Wes. Was the pipe you got out of the back of your truck what you dug up? How to dig a ditch the smart way. At Lowes and Home Depot, 1/2" x 10' was $5.24. $4.19 at both places if you bought 8+ at Lowes or 10+ at Home Depot. Have good days!

No, the pipe in the back was the newer pipe. I'm not sure that the old pipe would have handled getting bent like that. It probably would have broken. I got this pipe locally. 20' sections, bell end, $15 something.

Not really necessary here. If there's a threat of a long cold snap, I just turn off the water outside and drain the lines. As far as the depth of the pipe goes, there's not really a frost line here, so the depth is not all that critical.

William, the frost line here in the sunny south is virtually non-existent. Put something an inch or two below ground and it will never freeze. I had a one-inch PVC line to the west in Alabama that was far north of here. It was a quarter mile long in a shallow ditch that wasn't covered. It was fine for many years and never froze except at the end above ground where the wind could get to it. I eventually covered that small part with dirt and it never froze again.
