In Italian tradition our flag was inspired by Dante Alighieri, when in 1320 in his "Divina Commedia" referring to Beatrix's apparition he wrote: "sovra candido vel cinta d’uliva donna m’apparve, sotto verde manto vestita di color di fiamma viva." "over a pure white veil, crowned by a olive branch, the woman appeared to me, under a green cloak dressed with a bright flame colour"

+gnet kuji The legs form the Triskelion and has probably dates back to the time Sicily was a colony of Ancient Greece, and the head of Medusa dates back to the Sicilian Vespers and they may have used it as a protective symbol during the wars. And it's on red and yellow, which go back to the time the Spanish dominated the region.

+leakycheese the simbol is called tryskelion and it is very ancient. It has reached the maximum of notoriety with the Greeks but it is more ancient. Many other people used it (the Celts for example, this the origin of the link with the Isle of Man) starting from prehistoric age.

Dear Jabzy, the red and yellow of some flags in the Italian south don't come from the Spanish flag, but from the arms of Catalonia instead. The shield you show to exemplify this are the arms of Catalonia, which are derived from the Counts of Barcelona. The Catalan four red bars over a golden background are the world's oldest country flag - older than Denmark's. Cheers!

Important mistake! The spanish did not exist back then (in 2:00), and the CoA shown is the one of the Crown of Aragon, which existed until it's conquest by Castille in 1714 (by Decree of Nueva Planta and right of conquest), so it's a clear anachronism. The aragonese/catalans were the ones that conquered the south of Italy. The senyera (one of the oldest flags in Europe, if not the oldest), the flag of the Kingdom, is still the flag of Catalonia, which in turn inspired the creation of the flag of Spain in the XVIIIth century.
@JabzyJoe

@AleixASV 8 жыл бұрын
+Jabzy Yeah, but that would be like saying that something a scot did in the 1300 is equivalent to something a *brit* did in 1300: It makes no sense. Plus Aragon was kinda a big deal back then, much much more than even Scotland, it wasn't just a region or a city :P. I mean, we did put and mantain the Borgias in the Papacy plus conquered Greece (though who didn't), that is quite something. Anyway, Aragon was pretty much one of the weirdest Kingdoms in Europe... among others we invented a proto-parliment (General Courts) and set up a federation of Kingdoms which allowed us to pretty much rule the Mediterranean sea unnoposed. So yeah.... video please? There's not that many things crazier in history than the wars of the Catalan company, even if maybe english sources aren't that great (also search for "Catalan revenge" or why the catalans couldn't enter into a greek monastery until 5 years ago). Anyway, the flag that you called "Spanish" (as a catalan: ughhhhhhhh) is the Senyera, the flag of Catalonia and CoA of the House of Barcelona, who ruled the Crown of Aragon in its surge to power. That's why the flag became also the symbol of Aragon. When creating the flag for the newly formed Spain in the XVIII century (since before the war of spanish succession it wasn't a unified state: Castille and Aragon ruled independently albeit under the same king) the king choose to use a pattern based on the flag. So that's what what :P
@MattUK36
@MattUK36 8 жыл бұрын
It's never been called 'senyera' in any historic document, it's the flag of The Kingdom of Aragon, and it most certainly had NOTHING to do with the Spanish flag, created with bright colours to differenciate the ships of the Spanish Empire's fleet from other vessels from rival countries. So fed up with brainwashed catalan separatists, dear Lord.

🤓🇮🇹 (google translate) Renato del Ponte wrote: "In Rome, the three colors also connote the three primitive tribes of Ramnes, Luceres and Titienses, with whom Romulus creates the prisca city, the legacy of a perhaps even more ancient tradition, so that, designing the site of the original Rome on the basis of this tripartition, we will obtain the palette of our Tricolore, with the green of the Titienses in the north, the white of the Ramnes in the center and the red of the Luceres in the south. But in Rome the three colors were so important that they appeared in the context of flags. These, colored album, roseum, caeruleum, were hoisted on the Capitol to convene, respectively, the comitia curiata (sacral), centuriata (military) and collective tumultus ". It has also been noted that more or less veiled references to the tricolor often appear in the Aeneid, the sacred poem of the Augustan imperial adventure. Giovanni Pascoli, in particular, dwelt on the figure of Pallante, son of Evandro, ally of Aeneas in the war against Turno, king of the Rutuli. In Pascoli's vision, Pallante, killed in combat by Turno, is the first fallen hero for Italy. In the Aeneid we read that Pallante's coffin was intertwined with twigs of strawberry tree and oak branches. Pascoli saw the first tricolor in the coffin of Pallante, because in the strawberry tree, among the green leaves, white flowers still sprout when the berries are already red. In Rome, even the factions of the circus chariot races reproposed the same color scheme: there were the snores, the albati and the virides, respectively sacred to Mars, Jupiter and Venus.

The yellow and red of Sicily are not related to catalonia. They are the colours of the first cities to revolt against the angevins conquerers in 1282 in the Revolt of the Vespers (Which were Palermo and Corleone). Moreover the colors of the city of Messina (a yellow cross over a red field) are waaaaay older than that, since they were granted to the City many centuries before by byzantines when a fleet from Messina saved the emperor by reconquering Constantinople from invaders who sieged it.

The symbol on the Sicilian flag is called the triskelion. It's originally a Celtic symbol. I'd love to know how it made its way to Sicily. It seems to be word play, as another word for the triskelion is the "trinacria" which is also an ancient name for the island of Sicily.

The St. George red Cross was the flag of Republic of Genoa and the Brits during the first Middle Age bought from Genoa's Doge the right to show it on sea when crossing around Mediterranean Sea. That for security reasons because Genoa had Pact and Threaties of non-fighting with the Turks and this flag was an important insurance on sea. Since that period England and the Town of London adopted the same St. George Cross and the genoese armours with the two dragons.

@UorykSoalokin
@UorykSoalokin 8 жыл бұрын
+ArtetrA Well there is a connection so that assumption is not entirely wrong. You see blue represent the blue colour of the Aegean sea and the white the colour of the waves. Now, about the houses which are blue and white. Have in mind that the houses which are blue & white are those related to the island regions of Greece. Mass dislocations of the white colour (lime) was after a cholera pandemic in 1938 since back then bleach was not a widespread solution. Then in 1955 for tourism purposes and also because blue and white was close to the colours of the Greek flag and therefore to the nation, which at the time (Cold war - Capitalism vs Communism) you can say that somehow nationalism was counted with regard to how blue your house was; pushed Greek people to adopt this tradition. So, long story short; blue and white became landmark of Greek islands.

+ArtetrA That could be true. Do not forget that producers are doing movies not documentaries. They are trying to sell a beautifully product (So they can make money) and not a product that could be unattractive to viewers. Moreover, because I tried to tell a short version of the story I may have missed details which could be mentioned in the movie and you may thought to be wrong. I am not saying I lied. What I said was true. I simply tried to make a short story for those who can not find information because lets face it, its a Greek matter and there are limited sources in English or other languages.

Uoryk Soalokin well it's definitely possible that the director made some mistakes, as it always happen for movies set in the past. Maybe it just was impossible to recreate II world war Greece properly. By the way I studied ancient greek in high school but I think it's quite different now :D

I am not talking about the state of Italy, I'm talking about Italy that the first time it was unified in History was at Romans' time and the flag was created around the 17th century by the state of Lombardy.. so who's copying who?

Peter Bound Italy had those colors first, true, but what about the order? Mexico had this order of the colors first, then Italy adopted that same order for its flag
@CeccoGrullo
@CeccoGrullo 6 жыл бұрын
The Crusader Italy had both those colors and that order first, in 1797 (google the flag of the Cisalpine Republic). Actually, the green, white and red colors together first appeared in 1789 as a symbol for the Piedmont-Sardinian jacobin movement (a secret society that supported the cause and values of the French Jacobin party), then it became the pattern, in various orders, for the flags of the Napoleonic Sister Republics in Italy and, after the Congress of Vienna, it became the symbol of the Italian independentism, until it eventually became the flag of the Italian country. As you can see, Mexico has absolutely nothing to do with the Italian flag. Mexicans made their flag later and it looks similar just by coincidence.
