OK - it's worrying to see how many people believe the story about the moon reflecting in a pool of blood, so I'm going to respond to it with some questions. Why did Turkic states use the crescent before the battle of Kosovo? Why did the crescent not become widely used until the 16th and 17th Century in the Ottoman Empire? Why are there green Ottoman flags with the crescent on? If that story was true surely the red flag with the crescent would have been adopted instantly. But, its a story, just like the Scots seeing a white cross in the blue sky before a battle. Honestly, there's nothing that backs it up.
@daisygowanditchburn48447 жыл бұрын
Probably stems from the rise of nationalistic movements in the Balkans who, to a large extent, define themselves in opposition to the Ottomans who they see as oppressive. Thus stories that perpetuate a type of national mythos where their brave ancestors were crushed by bloodthirsty outsiders would be given more currency. At best this is simply the projection of a skewed version of the present into the past. Something that is very easy to do and many of us a guilty of it, whether purposefully or accidentally. This is particularly true in relation to nations and national identities. Such as the projection of Britain into the past, before the act of union. Or the contrast between England and France (which is quite complicated). There could be other reasons for the popularity of this explanation but those tend to relate to something rather more unsavoury.

"im Turkish so I would know" - I can't stand it when people say stuff like that. Do you everything about Turkish history or just that? And I'm British, why don't I know much about the Saxon migrations? Or what about American professors of the classics, is it stupid of him to believe he will ever know more about Ancient Greece than a Greek plumber? Where does it say that in the constitution? I have no idea if its in there, but keep in mind, the people who write constitutions don't study flag history - they chose the myth over reality (look at the video on China). But, here's my standard set of follow up questions. - Why did Turkic states use the crescent before the battle of Kosovo? Why did the crescent not become widely used until the 16th and 17th Century in the Ottoman Empire? Why are there green Ottoman flags with the crescent on? You need to stop believing in stories man.

Jabzy the crescent and star represents Islam. that is a fact. but secular Turkey ( when ottoman empire became the republic of turkey) tried to separate themselves with Islam as much as possible. Turkey didn't want to use the Islam crescent star as their flag. but when the blood and moon situation happened, they found a reason to use that flag and make it red because of the blood, not green which represents Islam like the ottoman flag had. sorry for bad English again.
@JabzyJoe7 жыл бұрын
blood and moon situation happened - when was that? You have a first hand source? The crescent and star represents Islam - You believe Mohammad used the crescent? If not, who did? not green like the Ottoman Flag - You can see a collection of red ottoman flags at the beginning of this video.

I think every flag seems to have a story like that. St George smeared the blood of the dragon on his shield in a cross. The Scots saw a white cross in the blue sky. An blood soaked Austrian removed his belt to reveal red, white, red. But I'm afraid I tend not to believe them. Just like I don't believe it when somebody says "Blue = Freedom" or "Yellow = hope," when describing a centuries old flag.

Jabzy what of the star?
@JabzyJoe7 жыл бұрын
Depends on what version you believe I guess. I mean if it was taken from the Byzantine Empire then it would make perfect sense to include the star. But, from very early on, the star isn't always included on banners, mosques etc. and so it seems strange that the Ottomans would sometime remove it . So that's why I think the Turkic and Byzantine symbols were mixed early on. Well that's the only reason I could think of to explain why there would be this confusion around its inclusion. But that's just my theory, so it could be crap. As for the number of points on the star, I will touch on the importance of 5 points more when I cover Israel/Morocco. But the Ottomans didn't uniquely use 5 - for instance this was captured in the 19th Century - s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/b8/61/66/b86166b38ce52811f711714c1855ae17.jpg

Great video. I always assumed that the Crescent-Star were leftover symbols from the nomadic nature and life-style of the Anatolian Turks, something along the lines of a symbol for a tribe or for the god Tengri himself. The red came into full effect around the time where nationalism really began to spread so the reason behind the "crescent reflecting in a pool of blood" hypothesis could have its origins within it. Either way, TENGRI BIZ MENEN!

Still, it is such an ugly flag. The symbol is just too Islamic associated. Turkey is a secular nation, and even though it is an ancient religious symbol, it was stolen and misappropriated by Islam. Turkey would be better off just having a single white star on their flag, or maybe a white stripe going down it. It would be more simple and more secular.

The crescent appears on many if not most orthodox churches with the cross on top of it and the star in the middle of the cross. it also appears on tombs. It's an element appearing on the emblem of Romania and the republic of Moldova as well. It was chosen in 1844 as flag of the Ottoman Empire as to be a common symbol for Muslims and Orthodox Christians so all Ottoman citizens could feel identified with it and represented. The crescent and star were a symbol of Constantinople, the residence of both the Calif and the Orthodox Patriarch, thus important for both religions. It was part of the tanzimat reforms, and a step towards secularization of the Ottoman Empire. Nice job, thank you for the video.

+Jabzy Portsmouth FC was actually a soccer club created on the initiative of Sultan Abdulhamid Han. Sultan Abdulhamid was as Otto Von Bismarck alleged to have said: "If wisdom is 100 grams Abdulhamid has 90 grams of it. I have 5 grams of it and the rest of the leaders and politicians have the other 5". He used to plan beforehand before taking an action. Historians were also baffled how he predicted that he knew the Western Union would want to attack the Ottoman Empire on the Darnadelles by a Poem he read from a Brittain which he interpreted that way so he ordered hospitals and storehouses to be built there which helped a lot in logistic way. He even also planned for a war 6 years before it happened: he wrote down everything: to the extent to where there ingredients for breakfast lunch and diner would come from (even planted grape trees before hand close to the battlefield if I am not wrong; this one I am not so sure of but it was along this line). Now back to Portsmouth FC; As Brittain was the game changer at Abdulhamids era (the Kingdom that started redrawing borders); he wanted to spy on the Royalty in the extent that even the breakfast they ate came as reports; Portsmouth FC was one of those clubs to infiltrate spies to GB. He didn't say for nothing when he said "Under every stone I turn, I see the works of the Brits" stating that they are planning and instigating propaganda against the Empire. Drogheda United also has the same logo; Drogheda's story is a bit different; When Ireland was in a famine; the Sultan (Abdulhamid) wanted to send 10000 coins (GB coins from that time) and sent an envoy; the Queen replied that the Sultan can only send 1000 as she herself sended 2000 so it could harm her reputation; in turn the Sultan Gave 1000 but secretly sended some boats with aid packages without harboring to the harbors close to Britain; As a token of thanks the Drogheda United for instance and some places in the city have the present star emblem. TO end it: If someone really wants to understand some of the late 19th century begin 20th century one should read the life of Abdulhamid. No one in his close circle was with him (they has Western ideologies and kind of "admired" them) That's why he created a secret intelligence korps without the knowledge of his Grand Vizier.
@JabzyJoe7 жыл бұрын
Few problems there - the Portsmouth coat of arms date back the around the 17th Century. Or, at the very least way before Portsmouth Football club was established. And a local brewery owner founded Portsmouth. Plus, lets say it was a front for Ottoman spies, why would they use a crescent? Do you not think that would give away the game a bit? Be like Soviet Spies in America wearing a hammer and sickle. Otherwise I can't find anything to back up any of the predictions or quotes you mentioned. Well besides the odd forum (not the most reliable ones). So, where did you find this? Are there actually any historic sources?
@iTechRevolutionTV7 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's the problem; there are some other mentioning as in: - The Portsmouth Cities coat of arms was a present 700 years ago already - www.hurriyetdailynews.com/default.aspx?pageid=438&n=0407131012523-2010-04-07 (you take for what's it but yeah like any news some things can be a jist). Below is the transcript of the researcher mentioned in the newspaper: www.onaltiyildiz.com/haber.php?haber_id=1294 And secondly that's why I said "alleged"; Otto Von Bismarck does have favorable mentions towards the Ottomans (proven quotes; well not the one I stated above though). That's what irritates me the mostly yet makes me enjoy history as well... Too many sources but even if you find it, sometimes interpretation is the answer. (+ The availability of archives)
@JabzyJoe7 жыл бұрын
Yeah they're the 2 links I found. 1 seems to be a historical novel or something and it's filled with inaccuracies and the researcher just seems to have made it up. "However I strongly believe that this team was perhaps a declaration operation of both Ottomans." So I'll assume he saw Portsmouth used a crescent on their strip. ignored the history of the symbol in the City and just assumed it had connections to his native Turkey. Then came up with a story of Ottoman spies. He doesn't answer basic things like which footballers were spies? Why did the brewery need to invest money if it was funded by the Ottoman court? etc. etc. Afraid to say it sounds completely fictional to me. And I can't find any reference to the other quotes either - "100 grams..." or "Under every stone..." Where did you find those? As for Drogheda, I'm a little skeptical as well. The crescent was mentioned before the famine and Abdulhamid was 3 years old when the famine began. www.independent.ie/regionals/droghedaindependent/localnotes/the-arms-of-drogheda-explained-27111958.html
@iTechRevolutionTV7 жыл бұрын
Drogheda Is legit and the Every stone thing is legit as well; it's just so that western books didn't write about it; but in Turkish archives it still lives on. As for the Portsmouth Fc it might be a story and the 100 grams thing those i can't back up but the other ones I can. archive.aramcoworld.com/issue/201501/an.irish.tale.of.hunger.and.the.sultan.htm
@JabzyJoe7 жыл бұрын
I once believed the link to Drogheda, but it's really a myth. But this myth has persisted and many people still report on it (but the problem with making flag videos is you realise how much is inaccurate). This made me appreciate it's older than the famine - www.antiquestradegazette.com/news/2006/luggala-the-best-irish-house-sale-in-years/. There are reports of aid (by Abdulmecid, not Abdulhamid). being sent, but Drogheda's coat of arms predates it. Can you link me to the "every stone..." thing and the preparations to World War 1. I can translate it.

The red color of the flag represents the vlood of the martyrs during the War of Independence. The crescent represents the foundations of faith and the star represents the foundations of Islam. The star is inside the crescent thus expressing Islam in all of its ways.

You skipped over the star.. As for the Crescent, most of the Turkish Historians associate it with the Eastern Roman Empire.. Some even add in the star to be another Roman Symbol. And when you put it into the time perspective, it makes some sense, since Mehmed II fashioned himself a Roman Emperor, to which Russians said piss off and declared themselves Roman Emperor. It becoming official flag might've been to symbolise the "Westernisation" of the country, emphasising the Roman claims and thus self-fashioned westernism. Since in Mehmed's time and onwards, Ottomans were the superpower, rivalled only by the domains of Hapsburg... Which was prone to inner quarrel. And it declined towards the end of 18th century and required to emphasise it's westernism to the new superpowers such as France, England etc.

Great research. Thank you for your showing my county flag. I didnt know that our flag has so much deep history. But i can give information for you. Crescent does not come from islam or byzantines. It come from old turkic shamanisn and symbol of the early turks. When Ottomans become dominant this turkic symbol turn into islamic symbol ( actually islam doesnt have any symbols) .
@MegaXLG7 жыл бұрын
6:53 that symbol (IYI) was actually the symbol of the "kayi" tribe out of which the Ottoman dynasty came. These are all the symbols of the various oguz tribes that came to anatolia: 3.bp.blogspot.com/-BUXEXag6-Uw/VN46EXXxqdI/AAAAAAAAABw/BA_8JPXFXuE/s1600/BMPDXUbCAAAdGn1.jpg

Well explained video about the theories! I wouldn't say the todays turkish flag, originally, tries to associate with Islam but rather focuses on a national aspect since Atatürk's changes.

Just to say, the modern flag of Turkey is just an edited version of what Ottoman Empire used as its flag in WW1.

Star and cresent come from Turkic beliefs since before Islam and before we came to Anadolu we were believing gok-tengri which means sky god.It was a monoteic belief that states god is in the skies so moon and stars used in Turkic nations way before Islam and the red color come from last war in the independence war blood of the Greek soldiers reflects in the river.At least they say like this but since Ataturk was the one who did the flag and he was a nationalist it is possible he wanted a heroic story and something related to Turkic culture.

Thanks you Jabzy... But 5:10 most importantly the crescent was not used early Muslims, not my The Prophet or those who met him... So it is not The Symbol of Islam but mearly a symbol of some Muslims...
@kinsdamith64687 жыл бұрын
The crescent became the symbol of Islam after that the ottomans conquered all that region and kept on after the fall of the empire

There are myths, one of them is that the flag as it is today, was designed like this due to the moon and a star reflecting on the blood of the fallen martyrs one night after a battle. I am surprised you didnt come across that in your research +Jabzy

small nitpick. when showing the Arab flag colours it seems that the Iranian flag snuck in. Iran isn't an Arab country and the choice of colours is probably coincidental. plus it's missing the black colour used on most of the other flag

just a quick reminder here , you said in your video in 1.00 :"in the 16th century turkic shiite who fought for the persians were called Kızıl-Bash " there are some mistakes in that statement the 1. the concept of persia as an state ended with the islamic conquest of the land and even before that the name persia was given to that chunk of land by some western civilizations and in the area itself there were many other tribes and confederations etc 2 . i beleive you mean the Safavids by the "Turkic Shiite" and actually they were the ones who turned Iran to shiite and before them the majority of the people who had converted to islam at that point were sunn like every other muslim and the the whole shiite part of islam actually was created or gained importance by the safavids as a mean to distinguish themselves from other rulers and so gain power . 3 . the frase "fought for the persians " makes no sense considering they were the rulers and if anything people fought for them . and their millitary "Qızıl-Baş" as you mentioned means "golden heads / Red heads / Red Hats" and is a turkish word as the dynasty itself is Turkic .

the modern turkish flag (white star and moon, red background colour) "red" stands for the blood our ancestors gave to protect our lands in WW1, the white star and moon stands for the moon/star light shining on the blood on the the battlefield of "all" the soldiers whom gave their lives. here this is the real story... oh the moon and the star also stand for Islam.
@JabzyJoe6 жыл бұрын
So why did they have a red flag before WW1?
@mehtapyerinde20293 жыл бұрын
No , we using the flag since1844
@RussianJan1tor3 жыл бұрын
@@JabzyJoe that is a slightly different flag, if you look at the star it is bulkier. and the modern flag has a brighter red. her you go. but yeah you are right it is basically the same flag.

The Turkish flag came about after the Anzac war. The Bosphorius sea was running red from the bloodshed at that time Turksh leader Atatürk after gaining victory over the English and Australian”s who were heavily defeated looked over the Bosphorus Sea and saw the Crescent moon n the sky. Then a shooting star came flashing by. Atatürk was very moved by this and declared the Turkish flag for the new Republic will be red to represent all the blood she’d and the New Moon crescent and star. The new moon representing new beginnings and an end of an era and the shooting star a wish.

The reason Saudia Arabia and Oman don't have the double pointed sword of Ali is because its mainly a Shia symbol and those countries are not
@JabzyJoe7 жыл бұрын
But the Ottomans and Mughals weren't Shia either.
@killio887 жыл бұрын
I think modern Sunni countries have distate for Shiites, especially Saudia Arabia. While maybe the Ottomans and the Mughals viewed the sword of Ali as a muslim symbol rather than exclusively Shiite. I am just speculating here.
@killio887 жыл бұрын
Also, you keep mentioning the Zulfiqars as a plural when there was only one given to Ali.
@IbrahimYenin7 жыл бұрын
Sunnis wouldn't really allow Shias to hijack the Zulfiqar as "their symbol". Shias are just more likely to use it for exceptionalism.
