I actually lived in Bobonong when I was young.... and my dad and I would drive that road on the weekends to visit the cattle post where he kept our livestock. Finally got my full motorbike license this year and I know exactly what I am doing next time I get some time off of work!!!! It's been such a great nostalgic trip watching these. Thank you.

Hi Noraly - most rivers in the southern-african region only flow during rain-fall, the rest of the time they are dry. From an aircraft you can see the water move down the river bed like a 'pulse', dry bed ahead, damp bed behind. The reason for the wide beds is that when it rains it is usually as a result of storm activity;. we don't get much rain, but when we do, we get it all at once !! The point being, even in wet seasons, the rivers do not 'flow' in the conventional sense.

Wise choice Jeroen. I have a 2015 Honda CB500X which I purchased second hand 2 years ago with 19,000 km on the ‘clock’. I’ve now ridden another 15,000 km on it. This is my 7th motorcycle (I’m 66) and it’s by far the most comfortable, reliable, smooth and economical (fuel wise - at least 450 km from one tank of fuel) of any motorcycle I’ve owned. In short, it’s ‘sweet’. Don’t pay any attention to people describing it as a learner’s bike or an entry level machine. Total rubbish. You will be well able to cruise comfortably on your new machine at 110 km/hour all day with ample additional acceleration and speed for the average motorcyclist. Granted, it’s nowhere near as nimble or versatile off road as Norally’s little Honda or, by way of another example, a Yamaha XT250, but it will get you to those unsealed roads far quicker and with less ‘engine strain’ than such smaller machines. It’s also an excellent commuter around town. In four days time I’m heading off on my CB500X (with SW Motech panniers) with a mate (riding his Honda Shadow - so this time I’ll be riding on sealed roads) to enjoy a four day @2,000 km ride throughout the south of Western Australia - and I have complete confidence in my machine. Enjoy the experience of every ride (more than racing to get to your destinations in a hurry) on your new motorcycle …. ride with safety first in mind (always anticipating events in order to be one step ahead of ‘the game’) and hopefully, like me, you’ll get to enjoy years of enjoyable motorcycling (for me now almost 50 years). Norally totally demolishes the image of the tough macho motorcyclist - most often Prima donnas. She’s tougher - and ‘cooler’ - than 90% of all the male riders out there. It’s all about technique - not speed and noise - and ‘smelling the roses’ as you ride.

The dry river beds are quite normal. They only flow after the rain and dry up again. The Dikgatlhong Dam is in the Sashe River and does not give hydropower. It supports Francis Town and the coalfields where they generate power from coal. The Sashe River is much larger than the Limpopo River, and when in flood, the farmers in the Limpopo River beyond the confluence rejoice. The Sashe and Limpopo have lots of water seeping below the sand, and many farmers pump that water for their crops.

@@robhart3451 I think the main difference is that in Season 1 she had hard panniers and a top box, also not the very best riding gear, Now she has soft luggage which is lighter and packs differently so she has a lower centre of gravity. Also she now has the very best available riding gear from Rev'It which has a lot more protection built in

The sand river outside Bobonong is also the Motloutse. I lived in Selebi Phikwe for 13 years and used to go down to the Motloutse. In the rainy season you get flash floods in the river that can come with no warning. I had a friend stuck in the riverbed in a Landrover that was completely submerged. Needed a Landcruiser to get him out. 😂. We used to travel out to S Africa via Zanzibar border post, a low level bridge impassable if the Limpopo is high, or via Stockpoort just outside Lephalale which has a higher bridge. This avoided queues at Groblersbrug/Martin's Drift, the main border crossing in NE Botswana. I left in 2004, one of the best countries I have lived in.

The dry rivers are seasonal. They look dead, but in the rainy season they can fill up very fast, then disappear just as fast. There is often water below the surface, hence tye trees. The uprooted tree would have been knocked down by violent flash floods. There's been a lot of rain in Southern Africa for the last 2 years, after a period of drought. Interesting to see the drone footage of the Limpopo in an earlier video, full with water. It is usually dry at this time of the year.

Wonderful episode as always Noraly. Africa really seems to have an ebb and flow to it - it's own particular speed. One just has to go with the flow and just experience it. Great to see the variety of animal life both wild and domesticated, the modes of travel eg donkey cart, bicycle, trucks, car, etc, and the terrain. Oooh...those African "roads"! - one must be prepared for everything and anything in that department! Also good to see that you can be totally out in the boondocks but can also find places like Francistown which has all the modern amenities and can be an "oasis" in the middle of all the dust and heat. Those dry riverbeds remind me on Australia where I lived for a year or two.

I think that was a particularly entertaining video. I think it is the very first video where you have filmed youself as the subject, for any more than slight glimpses. That check point guard was funny, so many locals along your route can’t get it through their heads you travel alone, maybe it’s a bit like here in Thailand my Thai lady didn’t think it was safe for me to go cycling, she watches a lot of horror stories on the TV, I don’t, sometimes if you want to enjoy your life you just have to get out there and do it.

I'm sure you would have seen many similar wide and dry river beds when you were working in Australia. . Southern African countries and Australia are similar in the way they are mostly very dry and the rivers only flow in the wet season - (sometimes)
