Hello Joel. I am a former Jaguar technician. As one other commentator on here has suggested a simple pressure test will usually reveal the issue, unless it's something like a head gasket that has gone which is very unlikely. One thing that is often overlooked and could quite easily be the cause of your issues is the actual expansion tank cap! They perish and at 20 years old it could easily be this if the rubber seal has expired. Well worth a try, but pressure check first. You can be pretty confident it won't be oil that is leaking as you would know by the smell of burning oil in that area near the exhaust manifolds and it burns blue so pretty easy to identify. Car is well worth saving as they are becoming quite rare and yours looks in good shape from what I can see. The Jag V8 engine is a gem, just change oil and filter regularly especially if it stands for long periods. Russ

The reason the coolant is lost after the car warms up is that initially, the coolant does not circulate until the engine is up to temperature. Also, I think you can save a lot of money by sourcing used parts or checking online yourself. You can get a new expansion tank on ebay for £35!

If you only wind up being ~ €2000-2200ish into the Jag and have it sorted, that'll truly be a great deal. Even if it needs more (let's be honest, it probably will 😅) it's still a fantastic car for the money!

Enjoying the Jag content. As others have said, it's a 20+ year old Jag, it will need a regular dollap of cash and constant fettling but a good opportunty to learn to tackle a few basic jobs yourself and it will keep going for many miles.

Joel, my guess is that this is a split hose after the thermostat. Once the engine warms up the thermostat will open allowing coolant to circulate through the radiator so I’m guessing that the car is unaffected by the split right up until the thermostat opens.

I hope that Dell Motor Services takes responsibility for that leak as they have charged you enough but obviously not got it right. It looks like a fairly tidy S type with the desirable 4.0 V8. The engine is the star of that car! You need someone who knows what they are doing to assess the cam chain pulleys, and the gearbox. You need to know if it is worth spending more money on. I wish you well Joel and maybe rope one of us in if that garage doesn't fix that leak free of charge! I am happy to call Dell Motor Services myself if they don't fix it, because I think they jolly well should! Do they know you have 20,000 views on this so far for this? I personally would remove the tax disc and parking permit but keep them in the owners handbook folder. Same for the other stickers if you think you can remove them without damaging them or the glass. I would also keep the old reg plates if they are the originals.

Looking at where the leak is coming from it could very possibly be the heater valve assembly. It's very common (been there). I have the 3L V6 and the 4.2V8 and they're both great cars. If you should fancy straight piping it I have a set of bespoke rear pipes you can have.

Really good video Joel - but a big bill for such a simple item! Replacing a coolant tank would take me around 30 minutes (including a cup of tea) and a spark plug/coil about the same on my XK8. If you shop around parts are not expensive for these cars and even modules can be rebuilt now. The forums are a great source of knowledge and very helpful. It's been years since I have let a 'technician' anyway near mine - any despite what some may tell you - the engineering on these cars matches or exceeds anything you can find in Germany.

I have a 1998 XK8. The heater hoses under the intake manifold and the octopus hose behind the engine can leak once the thermostat is on. When the temp is still low, the thermostat is shut and coolant would not flow in those hoses.

You could have done the ignition coil yourself with an OBD II reader and then buying the coils off the web. The expansion tank was probably a DIY proposition too. That engine would be great in my Stag, the Triumph V8 in it has died. Frigging the ECU would be too much of a pain though, I think.

Driving my x type 2.5 2002 back home one day I saw the “smoke” and smelled coolant burning in the ac. Started overheating pulled over opened the hood and was burned from spraying coolant lol. It was some hard plastic pipe that cracked which we ended up j&b plastic welding shut again and it was fine. At that point we were tired of putting money into it so yea. Plastic weld was perfect at the time hahah.

I still have my 1997 VW Golf GTI VR6 that I’ve owned since new. It has 229k miles so far, and has now become my sunny day car. Anyway, it went through a period of coolant leak issues and dumped its guts twice. Eventually had to have all the hoses replaced and a new radiator as well! I feel your pain Joel!

My old s type had a similar appetite for eating expansion bottles initially thought was a thermostat stuck closed but turned out to be my left hand head gasket failed pressurising the expansion bottle

My 2006 S Type is doing exactly the self and same thing, the difference is mine is a 2.7 twin turbo diesel V6 automatic, and you are right in part, it is a pipe that has split, but if its the same pipe as mine it's buried at the back of the engine and has to be dropped out of the car, if you still have the original radiator overflow bottle check it thoroughly as chances are it's not damaged, hope this helps.

I have had a similar experience on my X-type where the water pump was worn out, soon after it was the radiator and last of all, a leak off a pipe that was connected to the radiator. in between time, if you HEAR a gurgling sound then you KNOW the coolant level is going down, so check the header Tank level straight away and look for any leeks. thanks

Joel! I believe I may have the exact same issue as you on my 3.0 x-type. Except I think mine is just in the very early phases as I can do a good 100 miles before having to top up the coolant again. It’s definitely not head gasket, and I can’t really spot any leaks, I’ve just replaced the cap which kept sticking so if it isn’t that it must be the tank or pipes because the radiator seems to be fine.

Is that an engine known for headgasket issues? Reason being, if the cooling system gets exhaust gas pressure into it, stuff is going to start failing (such as expansion tanks, and hoses).

The AJ-V8 4.0 engine is bullet-proof, a great engine, good enough for another 100k. Expect a few niggles and cosmetics for the price, soldier on I think you have a good car. I have an 18-year-old XJ8 with the 4.2 lump butter off silk, I've had some niggles recently the drivers door failed to open and needed the module replaced along with the door catch...couple of hundred sorted it.

Would check the water pump. Sudden loss of coolant is usually the symptom of broken water pump/thermostat. Hoses will trickle usually, unless there is a fairly significant split. That's my penny's worth of thought.

I had one of these and very nice it was too, it also kept having a miss fire, it turned out to be water running down the windscreen onto the engine. I cured it by reversing the rubber near the bottom of the screen.

I have one of these jugs sat in my garden, failed the MOT on rotten sills. mechanically everything else spot-on, one of the best cars I had. I replaced it with a 4.2 which that now is sat on my garden! Point I wanted to make is with these jags there is one part that plays up a lot, and that is the valve for the heating system it’s down by the front bumper somewhere, but if that gets a blockage that could cause the problem with your expansion tank I’ve had issues over the years with heaters not properly working one side or the other and it’s these blasted valves not an expensive part, but I’m just wondering if that could be your underlying problem and issue?

I have no wish to scare the pants off you but I think you may be suffering from a head gasket issue. A blown head gasket possibly across the cylinder which needed the spark plug can, once the engine reaches temperature, begin to pump compression leakage into the water jacket of the engine. This will force water out of any place it can and in some cases even explode the filler tank. I would get a compression test done and look closely at the spark plug cylinder for a variance in compression Lbs PSI compared to the other 7 cylinders. Great video by the way Subbed and liked. I have the later 2007 2.7 diesel version. That has had some water issues too.. The thermostat housing which just really a water flow junction box and has no thermostat in it at all, decided to split. But that was down to old age. I changed that and then the heater control valve gave up. I have now bought shares in an antifreeze company. Despite that I love the thing and wouldn't part with it for all the tea in china. I bought the car in August this year for £2500 because it was spotless. Iv'e changed the cam belt and the rear high pressure fuel pump belt and because of the disgusting state of the engine internally with the DPF system I have now cleaned all the soot out and blanked the EGR valves on the turbos so its not recycling its own farts anymore. I have a S type 4.0. expansion tank is a pig to change. Lower hoses have quick release joints that are not easy to get to. I got a pressure test kit, should have been supplied as tool kit. Seals on the front of the V and water pump+ plastic thermostat housing all weak design. Upgrade as you go.

Re the cooling system, due the the cars age, it would be prudent for piece of mind to replace every piece of rubber attached to the cooling system. If not is it the case you will always wonder and spend your time staring at the temp gauge. I’d change the thermostat and water pump as well

i would consider whether the THERMOSTAT is stuck in closed position, if so you'll have no heating if switched on, great video, thanks for sharing, they are good cars if well serviced, my 1st 1999 S-Type done 230000 mls and was still good, my 2nd 2001 S-Type has now done 209000 mls and still good, both had exp.-tanks replaced, also a few ignition coils.

The car has two loops, small one and big one. Once car is cold fluid circulates in small loop, when it warms up thermostat opens to the big loop, and probably you have a leak in it. The workshop should test it while repairing the tank, or it jus let go in the weakest spot once pressure got higher after first repair.

Surely when they fitted the new coolant tank and did the work, they would have thoroughly tested it? New expansion tanks are available on eBay for between £35-£90, I ‘m sure the garage didn’t use a OEM part! Love the car, by the way, I had a 3.0 V6 and absolutely loved it, only problem I had was rust on the rear subframe, as I bought the car from a dealer near the coast, otherwise, a cracking and underrated car, would love another!

The 4Litre vs the 4.2- it's the other way around in Australia- most V8's advertised here are 4L. I personally would only buy the 4.2 as the problems (nicasil and plastic timing chain tensioners) were done with before the 4.2 was out. Had 2 XJ40's previously but the factory tuning was so mushy it didn't inspire. Compared to most cars of that engine size, it was like the accelerator cable was made from a bungee cord. Lovely and quiet though- made a 2007 holden commodore sound like it had rumbling front wheel bearings compared.

I hope you’ve not poisoned that poor little black cat. Before throwing money at the Jag make sure the sills are rot free. My V5 Golf did the same thing the other week and it was due to a brittle plastic thermostat housing and it was far better when they were made of metal, but manufacturers like saving a couple of quid at the cost of reliability. But the car is 23 years old so I guess I can’t complain really. I could of repaired it myself, but I was more worried about the local Cats,so I took the car to the garage and washed the road down with a few buckets of water before setting off.

It's the nature of old cars & cooling system leaks I'm afraid, fixing one thing highlights issues elsewhere, which is why it's worth buying a car you like, as you're more likely to forgive it! It's good you're realistic about it, still less money than a couple of months PCP on a new one.

Perfection demonstration that an expensive car new, gotten on the cheap 20y down the line, still costs a fortune to put right. I have been there before with an 2000 Jag XK8 Conv AJ27 engine: problem after problem after problem. Poorly maintained in the past...and not particularly reliable from new. Cooling is a recurrent issue on these engines (AJ26, AJ27 and even AJ34) due to rubbish parts, notably the water pump with plastic propellers. Shortly after buying mine, heating was random, coolant was running low and needed top up every 100 miles. It did cost me both head gaskets to replace. Then chassis corrosion was next on the list. Then some electronic issues. A money pit, more often on jack stands than on the road. Got bored. Still have it as Sorn in my garage, may sell it for parts one day as I may well recoup some of my losses just with the convertible top in excellent condition. Sadly, that's the bet you have to accept taking on. It does not always end well, it actually often ends as a money pit to keep these things on the road, multiples of the purchase price...

Have you made sure the timing chain tensioners have been done on this car? Not related to coolant but guaranteed to kill the car if they fail - 3.2/4.0 V8s are prone to it because they have plastic tensioners. They need to be upgraded to the later 4.2 metal items before it's too late

It’s a LR/Jag V8 so it’s going to have over heating issues, get used to it. There’s plenty of fixes out there, different heads, ARP studs, upgraded head gaskets, better expansion tanks. All make it into a reliable engine. Any air lock in these motors is a disaster waiting to happen, try water wetter, helps stop pockets of air in the block.

I'm not familiar with the S Type V8 layout, but I had a very similar issue with my 2006 X Type 2.0 diesel. Your symptoms sound exactly like how my issue first started. Coolant loss from the expansion overflow eventually progressed to overheating. It took some tracing as it got steadily worse over a few weeks. Are you getting any signs of oil in the coolant/ water in the oil ? Any signs, get the engine oil cooler and oil stat checked, if it has the type where water coolant cools the oil. The oil cooler is an alloy sandwich block, where oil and water both pass through it. They corrode internally on the spot welds, allowing oil and water to gradually mix and pressurise each system. It can resemble a blown head gasket, but the engine still runs perfect until it gets up to temperature, then rapidly overheats when oil and water thermostats open flow to the cooler. High oil pressure gets into the coolant during running as it progresses. In certain running conditions, it will blow oily coolant out of the expansion tank in time. Once you switch off, oil pressure stops, and coolant pressure can force water coolant back into the engine oil, so check it too. The hardest job after swapping the oil cooler is flushing both oil, and mainly the water systems of contamination. I used a liquid housold detergent in the coolant for several flushes, then changed the oil, filter, antifreeze coolant and thermostats.

Check everything involving water, water pump slight leak ?, as you say hoses could of split, or the tank could be slightly damaged very unlikely tho, but the hoses will be the age of the car so wouldn’t surprise me if it’s that, or quite simply the garage may of missed something putting back together 🤷🏼‍♂️

Im so sorry to read that bill. I had to pause at 2.10. Ive been watching your videos for months, and this is the first time i felt inclined to comment. Someones mentioned you can get a new coolant tank for £35 on Ebay. Mercedes only want £45 straight from the main dealers- I doubt Jaguar will want a lot more. That work description is shocking. The fact the mechanic cant spell suspension, and says "That could be costly " on the job sheet is shocking. was this mechanic an alien? please dont say hes a family freind. To see hes saying hes investigating a coolant leak but not running it up to temperature is shocking. Hes actually telling you on the job decription to check it later when he knows youve left and it will boil straight up. I`m not sure why you took it there, but any (half) decent mechanic watching this will know you have been properly striped up mate. £555 for 1 spark plug , 1 coil, a water bottle , and a bottle of coolant is frightening . Ive noticed he hasnt itemised his labour hours either. oh dear. I havnt watched the rest of the video yet, but im guessing you just spunked 500 quid and the cars no better. I looked at the V8 back in 2002, even then the stealers said don't touch the V8 as they had some major issues with them, ended up with a 3.0 for a few years. Liked the retro look but not that practical as a family motor, I think the v8 is rare for all the wrong reasons? Have had several X type and much prefer the S.

Its a fair looking car before it starts to get tatty, listed it on facebook market place for £985 ono. If you get the right punter comes along you should get £900 no trouble

Does this have the plastic thermostat housing that the V8 XJ of the same period had? If so, they are a known weak point.

Great content. I’d keep the tax disc all part of the provenance. Or get a new copy made up plenty of places online to do that. Personally I’d keep the original plates as well. You can have a go at fixing that rust spot yourself not too tricky and good content. Lovely car. I’ve got an 04 S Type R it’s the 4.2 V8 but both engines are super smooth with effortless power.

To people like me ,telling me a certain car I like is totally unreliable and I shouldn’t buy one is a waste of breath- my heart has always ruled my head as far as cars are concerned (hence no money in the bank!) Please do keep the jag- I love a luxo barge that does sod all to the gallon. BTW there are jokes I could make about seeing a maiden squirt but I’m not going there!👍👍
