From what I've heard, PTX got the ultimate compliment when, before he passed away, Leonard Cohen (who wrote "Hallelujah") watched and heard this video and stated that it was the best version of his song he'd ever heard. Considering that everybody and their brother has covered this song, that's a hell of a compliment.
@rogerjones60334 жыл бұрын
He also allowed contemporary Christian singer/guitar shredder Lincoln Brewster to add some verses and call it "Another Hallelujah" which has even deeper Christian meaning to it. Lincoln performs it at Bayside Church in CA where he is a worship pastor and yes that is Lincoln on the shredding lead guitar! Here is a lyric video kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZzZpnyGrNukptk There is another that actually has Lincoln talking about writing a letter to Leonard and getting his blessings!

@@ItsmeBarry Their Original song, "Run To You", will wreck your soul in the very best way possible. Background on the song: It was written by Kevin[the beatboxer/cellist/singer/etc] and Avi(pronounced Ah-vee)[the bass singer]. It is the first original song the group has ever done. The group had to practicing singing backwards in order to film parts of the video because they need the petals to seem like they were rising in some parts. An introduction to Pentatonix for you: Scott: the tall blonde guy in the middle with the first solo. He's the baritone of the group but has a range of about 4 octaves. He's just as comfortable harmonizing on the high notes as he is taking the bass line when Avi is singing. Speaking of which... Avi: the guy with the beanie and the second solo. He's an amazing bass and doesn't have many solo parts but he always kills it when he does sing. He left the group in 2017 on good terms with the rest of the members and helped find his replacement, Matt. Kirstin: the only female in the group, she had the third solo. She has the least solos of the main 3 that you'll find, but she always kills it when she does sing(examples are Say Something, Sound of Silence, Imagine, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, all of which are among their best work) Mitch: He's the man with the amazing voice and the final solo in this song. He's a counter tenor, and has a purely angelic voice. Kevin: an AMAZING beatboxer, that's his main role, but he occasionally shows off his beautiful tenor voice (Imagine is a great example) and his skills with the cello, which he can play while beatboxing simultaneously. Pentatonix got their start on an old competition show called the Sing Off where acapella groups competed against each other for a $200,000 cash prize and a recording contract. Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch sang in choir together in school and have been best friends since they were teenagers. They found Avi through a friend and Kevin through one of his "cello boxing"(playing the cello and beatboxing) videos that went viral. They won the competition, you can still find the performances on KZbin. It's amazing to watch them grow throughout the show. Unfortunately, the record label dropped them shortly after they moved out to make music, so they persevered and self produced for a while until they were picked up by another label. They are the only acapella group to ever win a Grammy, and they have won 3: for their Daft Punk medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene ft. Dolly Parton. They're an amazing group, every one of them is one of the most talented singers in the world, and they have never released a bad song imo. Welcome my friend, a wonderful world of musical bliss awaits.

Barry, welcome to the Pentatonix world. I'm soooo pleased to see you jump into this water as well. They've been around almost a decade, largely doing covers, but their own work is exceptional as well, and they can do a mashup that'll blow your socks off just with the intricacies of the harmonies and changes. This song includes Avi Kaplan singing those glorious bass notes (shivers every time) and he's since left the group and has wonderful music on his own. Future catalog suggestions: Imagine, Home (a mashup of numerous songs), Bohemian Rhapsody, and you'll love all their holiday remakes around Christmas. They're amazing. Wonderful to see your reaction to them, and yes, I've yet to see a truly bad performance from them. Cheers. PS, since you recently reviewed Dolly's "Jolene," worth noting that they did a version with her that won a Grammy for best country duo or group. Amazing.

I get the feeling the Pentatonix world is a wonderful place to be. I’m so pleased to have discovered them and I can’t wait to get all Christmasy with them. Dolly and the Pentatonix must be unbelievable 👍

It's me Barry they are the most successful acapella group in history. This video has had 500+ million views. They do a mix of amazing covers (their breathtaking cover of “Mad World” came out today!), and original songs. Check their history. Suffice it to say. It’s taken a whole lot of work for them to perfect their craft. So much work that the bass, Avi Kaplan,( long dark hair and beard) found the routine of arranging-rehearsing-recording-touring was daunting, since his mom was ill. He amicably left the group in the fall of 2017, and helped them find his replacement, Matt Sallee, (a graduate of the Berkelee College of Music in Boston, with a degree in Vocal Performance!) They have millions of albums sold worldwide; their videos have gotten 6 BILLION views on KZbin, and they have millions of followers (including me)! Scott Hoying (baritone, tall blond) and Mitch Grassi (counter tenor, a visual chameleon of sorts-he ALWAYS looks different!) were childhood friends. They met Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo-soprano)in high school. They decided to audition for a singing talent show on NBC called “The Sing-Off” in Fall 2011-so they found Avi through a friend (he’s opera-trained, a true basso PROFUNDO), and Kevin Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire; speaks fluent Mandarin, is a master cellist, and had just graduated from Yale University, headed to medical school!) on KZbin. (Where he was CELLOBOXING, a combo of beatboxing and playing cello!) They all met the day before the audition. And they WON the competition. They got a recording contract-all moved to LA, and lost that contract-the label said acapella wouldn’t “sell”...OOPS on that! They started making KZbin videos, and developing a fan base. They made a “Daft Punk Medley” video for $400, and filmed it with an iPad in a kitchen closet. That arrangement and recording won them their first Grammy. They then got another recording contract. And have been full-steam ahead ever since. They now have THREE Grammys. Not bad for music that “won’t sell”! I’d check out their older material, but also some newer tracks. They have a new original song, “Happy Now”...and an older original that’s my favorite is “Run to You” (written by Avi and Kevin). We PTX fans are PENTAHOLICS! Everyone was sad when Avi left, but Matt Sallee has done a stellar job in the three years he’s been singing bass with them. Avi has his own solo music now; Mitch and Scott have their own duo “SuperFruit”; Kirstin has been on Broadway in “Kinky Boots” and Kevin has HIS own solo (fantastic talent) stuff. It’s an enormous body of work in 9 years. That’s why we Pentaholics call it a “rabbit hole” for PTX on KZbin. This was done in 2016. By the way, it’s wonderful that this moved you so deeply. PTX sounds EXACTLY the same in concert-I’ve seen them twice now-check out their LIVE version of “Hallelujah” they did for their 2016 Christmas special. Sounds. Exactly. The. Same!!

How can a pro not have heard of Pentatonix before now? They've been wowing audiences online for over a decade now.

good question, and one that still puzzles me to this day. I’d never heard of Pentatonix and I’m shocked to find that here in Ireland they have still haven’t become as well known as they should be. I’ve never had anyone talk about them and when I bring them up, no one knows who they are. I know they’ve performed here but In my opinion this groups name should be on the tip of everyone’s tongue. Maybe radio play could help but I’m thrilled to know that I’ve introduced some people to Pentatonix, they are a truly incredible act.

@ItsmeBarry Perhaps people in Ireland don't spend as much time listening to artists who self-publish their work online as Americans do? For every artist who gets a recording contract or radio time, there are untold thousands who do not. Most young Americans don't listen to the radio anymore. They find new music online instead, and what is available online is enormously more vast than what is available on the radio. Many artists without recording contracts earn a living entirely through views of their music videos online, with each view earning them money that comes from advertisers. KZbin is by far the largest venue for such artists and so-called "influencers" who make "free" videos for a living. I'm a Boomer who, like you, was used to learning about new music on the radio (and I still do that); but I learned a decade ago that there's SO much more available online (too much to ever keep up with). That's how most people have discovered young artists with beautiful voices and terrific compositional skills like Pentatonix. A composer I really like who calls himself The Fat Rat on KZbin uses a variety of very young female singers with gorgeous voices to perform his lyrics. One I particularly like is Laura Brehm, who began singing for The Fat Rat as a teenager with a beautiful though unrefined young voice, and who has since grown into a mature young lady and branched out to perform music by other composers and even some of her own compositions. Hers isn't even the best voice among those The Fat Rat uses in his music, but there's an innocence and sweetness to Laura's voice that I find compelling. I recommend you spend some time each week just wandering around KZbin to explore some of all the "unknown" music artists who freely share their music there. Much will not be to your taste (most is not to mine), but there's still more treasure to be found there than you'll ever discover through traditional outlets, and more than you'll ever be able to listen to in a lifetime.

Thanks so much for being the first reactor that has allowed this song to play all the way through and withholding their reactions until the end. That took a certain type of respect and a certain knowing and wisdom to recognize that you just don't interrupt a song like this. Once again, thank you.
