There is a mod for men at war 2 , that is an rts and a pretty realistic combat simulator, and with the mod you can play with chaos, guard, ad mech and a bunch of stuff. Can even deploy titans as imperial guard. Just remember it cause I find it similar (but better obviously) to final liberation

If I remember correctly, Fire Warrior's background audio is actually broken on modern Windows systems. Something about a legacy driver or a system library that hasn't been supported since the mid 2000's, but can be fixed by installing a mod. It's fair if you don't want to bother touching the game again but I thought it'd be worth pointing it out

The thing that made 1993's Space Hulk awesome is that instead of being a clone of the board game, it actally took advantage of the shift in media to give you a totally different gameplay experience. I guess it is probably extra difficult if you don't have the manual.
@PreceptorGrant2 жыл бұрын
I'm a bit older, played 1992 Space Crusade and 1993 Space Hulk on the Amiga when I was a teenager. Honestly, both were pretty fun at the time. Space Crusade for multiplayer with a few friends and Space Hulk by myself. Space Hulk 1992 was actually more clever than you realised, I appreciate you couldn't tell what was going on, but it was actually a nice conversion of the board game. It had a freeze time mechanic where you could pause the game to give orders, but in a limited way where the pause bar ran down and would only recharge in realtime play.

Letsplays are what got me into youtube in the first place - so I would ABSOLUTELY love a second/third installment of this series! Going through these games at a more rapid-fire pace to show off what they were, and what they could have been was really cool! I would personally love to see a longer series letsplay of one of the favorites of these games! Unsurprisingly, Dave makes a great commentator, and this was really fun to watch and sit back, with all the cozy vibes!

Space Crusade actually did have multiplayer local co-op! At least on the Amiga. I have very fond memories of playing it with my two older brothers. It was a really cool game with a campaign mode and you levelled up your team after the missions. It probably haven't aged that well, but still, at the time and for the eleven years old me, playing it with my siblings, it was fantastic!

Thanks for this. Space Hulk was my first game on PC in the 90s. We had to build extra Ram for our IBM at the time. It won game of the year when released. Such a great game at the time with what was possible in the early 90s.
@karlnygren2 жыл бұрын
I loved it too! I do feel that it was misrepresented here as an action game, it was truly a strategic horror game with the pause function being limited and the terminators dying rather easily even with lightning claws. It recreated the feel of the board game by adding that stress element.
@MajesticDemonLord2 жыл бұрын
Gotta absolutely disagree on Space Hulk. I remember playing this when it came out - it was absolutely terrifying, claustrophobic, atmospheric - clever usage of sound and a sense that you were just away from being wiped out by a much faster enemy, Space Hulk was what started a love of 40K for me.

Final Liberation was one of my absolute favorite games (even if a little janky) with all the glorious wacky 2nd ed Ork and imperial weapons. I was a video game deprived teen that got my hands on firewarrior on sale at Harvey Norman. The anti piracy stopped me from playing it for a couple of months until I learnt about 'cracking' games - I had to crack the game I bought. Then play around with audio drivers. Then, because I had little else to play I got about half way through - I didn't enjoy any of it. Bullet sponge enemies meant going through all your available ammo - then going back to get more just to get through one skirmish. Yeah you couldn't change the bad controls. It was full of glitches and crashed a lot. I finally stopped because it just crashed going to the next section every time. I guess the crashing saved me in the end.

Final Liberation was great, especially with the Land Raider update and the cheat to get Paladins. The soundtrack lives rent free in my head, as do the sounds of all that Guard Artillery I used to soften up Ork hordes before the troops went in. Plus the cutscene when you liberate the capital and your Commissar gives the planetary governor a good slapping? Just great.

The games from the 90s were referencing the garish nature of the art from the 2nd Edition "Red" era codices, so I would expect nothing less. The grim darkness of Rogue Trader didn't return until 3rd Edition later on.

I played final liberation (I still got it and play sometimes) and chaos gate. Chaos gate was a liitle difficult until I found one trick. With some movement points you could pass one weapon from a trooper to another. So I put them in a line and the heavy weapon was shot and passed, so I had 5-6 shots with the heavy weapon instead of one. This was unstoppable.

"The art...is completely over the top...high colour saturation, and not very grimdark...makes all of it feel very comic-booky" So, exactly what Warhammer was like in the early 90's then? Also, in defence of Fire Warrior, it _was_ built for the PS2 and the PC port was, like most PC ports of that time, kind of just slapped together with no thought towards future proofing (hence the lack of options and sound issues). However, even back then, _and_ playing it on the intended hardware, it wasn't a very good game. They _did_ get bolters right, though, so props to them for that. You do get to fight space marines, but it takes a while to get to that point.
@barfjavelin2 жыл бұрын
kinda switched off a bit in the video after he made that statement. old warhammer was absolutely over the top, colourful, almost silly in its presentation. The whole "grimdark" phase came with the cultural media shift towards more gritty grimy things and 40k adapted towards it.

Though my memories of playing these games is undoubtably heavily tinged by nostalgia (and the amount of weed I was smoking at the time...) I did enjoy Final Liberation (the end battles against Ork Gargants were nailbiting) and Chaos Gate (which, though I'm no grognard, seemed a fair approximation of the tabletop). Rites of War was a bit frustrating. DOW (yeah, even up to Soulstorm) occupied a ton of my time, and I've found the mods for it to be quite inventive and fun (UA and Unification being favorites)... so much so that I still play it, which is pretty remarkable for a game that's over 20 years old by now.
