The older VW timing belts are very similar but they have no locks, those locks give me a nice idea for VW locks when installing a timing belt.

I've got to brave the same job on a transverse 1990 Fiat Ducato soon, so this was a great help. Thanks for this - fingers crossed I can see what the hell I'm doing! 🙂

Think they are the same engine mate. I would not fancy that on a trans engine. Can't bloody see enough. 🤣🤣. Good luck buddy. Let me know how it went. 😌

The old VW Rabbits and Jetta diesels the Camshaft is tapered you tip that down and that gives you leeway to get the timing belt on. The Gas ones are more of a pain they dont have a tapered Camshaft (on the Timing belt side).

unless you've put some auntyfreeze in by now I hope you've drained it all down again as it's likely to freeze up again over the next week if you beleive the weather forecasts. Great Video again Adam.

Turn crankshaft a bit counterclockwise to give extra slack and after the belt is on, turn back crank to give you slack this time to put idler sprocket back on.

I remember when I first ever changed the cam belt on my Sierra CVH, and thought "This is a doddle!". Then I bought a Volvo which was a few years younger, and I remember thinking something like "Oh for crying out loud" or something along those lines😉. What an absolute pig of thing it was to work on - not made any easier by the fact that it's a transverse engine, and all the pulleys are only about four or five inches away from the inner wing. No clear line of sight on to anything, and barely enough room to get your fingers in there to fit the parts, let alone the spanners to tighten 'em all up again! Aww, and the was I thinking we'd hear the old beast firing up too!

Ow I never done a cambelt on a transverse engine, and don't want to 🤣🤣🤣. For the very reason you mention. This belt is a doddle to be honest. If I had the cover I would have finished the job and fired it up. That will come next time. 🤣🤣

I was told you should not put lock tight on core plugs because it will stop it popping out in the future if there was ever another issue

Yep, could hear that air around 25:50 ish. I've got the same type of compression testers and a leak down tester, same box, same gauge style etc. Bloody useful but you do have to go over everything and check for leaks before you use them! Had one with the diesel compression kit and a couple with the petrol kit (they actually sent me another kit for free ) and the leak down test kit isn't accurate on the gauge but does enough to check where you're leaking and how badly!

hi sorry to be the bad egg but you actually installed this belt in the wrong direction of the arrows on the belt you can see after 35mins onwards & at 46.47 , you are against the grain of the internal threads of the belt make up and on borrowed time it will overstretch and fail early ,i know its a year later but hopefully you will see this comment before it fails on you

When I did my first cam belt I must say its a bit sketchy at first but after that there ok obviously you've done them before but it's always like how can your engines life depend on a tiny tensioner pully bolt like that lol

Yeah 1 8mm bolt is all that holding it all together. Scary really. Hence why I torque it up correctly with lock tight. I not done many cam belts, I try and avoid them 🤣🤣🤣. Wish I had the cover so I could have finished the job.

You should try doing the same belt on a fiat ducato the engine is a transverse engine not a lot of room to play with From andy in devon

I thought it was a very short video but then I realised I slept through most of it... My excuse being, I just came in from working on restoring my 1927 Barford & Perkins motor roller since 7 this morning so I'm a bit tired. I will watch it again when I am a bit more awake. I did however hear you mention that the injector pump doesn't need timing??? Is the injection electronic, triggered from the ECU?

And yes it's common rail diesel so it's just a high pressure pump and injectors are fired by the ecu.
