G'day, Ian. The 1971 Ford XY Falcon GT-HO (Phase III) claimed a single Bathurst crown (Allan Moffatt in 1971). Four decades later, it remains Australia's most famous muscle car. The GT-HO wrote the book on Australian muscle-car performance, with its 'shaker' intake and 351 Cleveland poking through the bonnet it was a real beast of a car: 0-100km/h in high-6s, a mid-14 quarter mile, and top speed 227km/h (136 mph).

@@Twenty_Six_Hundred”Handling Options” is what we were told by motoring journalists (on behalf of Ford) at the time and, although it was just marketing talk, the GTHO was an improvement over the vanilla GT in various ways, they said. Couldn’t have. Wasn’t the James Hardie 1000 until 1981. Hardie Ferodo 1000 was first held in 1973 and was the first year of group C racing. Prior to that was the Hardie Ferodo 500, a shorter race distance of 500 miles. That’s what you’d have watched Moffatt race a GTHO in. Fun fact, Australia officially changed from miles to kilometres in July 1974, so the Bathurst race changed to km before the road it ran on did.

Before the V8 Supercars there was the Australian Touring Car Championship. The Group A cars (until Group 3A) all used a Hollinger GRA5 and RD6 5 and 6-speed H pattern dog-shifting gearbox. My parents burned through three ford V8s every two years from '68 to '74 so I was on my L plates in 351 fords. I drove my first XY GTHO before I was 17. Then in my working life I became a cop and had unmarked 5.8 litre fords home garaged for about 4 years deploying operationally around Australia. Those fords were great to drive in their standard trim and a pleasure to work the civilans with. Problem I found was the engine mounts when in one sustained harsh run (max torque/min torque) for 45 minutes I tore left and front engine mounts and fan shroud. Quick trip to the workshop and the unit was back on road in 90 minutes. Of course my vehicles were distant cousins from a well setup race vehicle.

The old phase 3 GTHO was said to have 500 modifications over the standard GT , so allegedly you could drive it off the showroom floor and race . i`ve driven a couple of them just putting around , one of them was actually a race car being prepared for sale a well known red one that raced around bathurst by a very famous driver :) , it was very much a tool and quite rough around the edges . a friend of my old man had a beautiful white XY GT , a non GTHO with a three speed auto , and it was a fantastic cruiser , 351 clevo power with the auto , so smooth , a really cool car . The old XY GT was always my dream car , but way out of reach for a peasant :) .

News in my feed today was from Drive was that a new low volume car company called Drive South says it will begin reproducing the LX Torana hatch design from the 1970s utilising modern manufacturing techniques, powered using a similar 6.2-litre V8 fitted to late-model Holdens. The vehicle will utilise fibreglass composite bodywork fitted to an aluminium chassis - inspired by V8 Supercars - fleshed out using CAD (computer-aided design), with 95 per cent of the components to be manufactured in Australia. Road legal and priced around $250,000. It will be interesting to see how that develops.

Coming from a poor household, my first car was an ancient beater in the early 90's. An XW Falcon, with an XA 4.1 6 cylinder in it, straight out of the Trading Post for about $500. I was working on the vehicle and getting rust cut out of it by backyard boys almost as much as I drove it, but I loved that thing. I miss it even today, but kept it going until around 2000 when it was pretty much shot and had stuff leaking out of it every which way, with a worn ring gear that made a lot of noise, and only started on rare occasions.

My late father was in the management at Broadmeadows in 1971 and was in charge of putting the GTHO's down the production line. I can tell you that the official stat's on these cars were lies for the sake of the government that was getting a backlash about the powerful vehicles being produced at the time. The XY GTHO Phase 3 Falcons were actually the most powerful and fastest production car ever built at the time. That includes Ferrari and Lamborghini the humble Falcon was built to race specs and the company lied in their own brochures about the specs to try to stop the government from banning them. The following year Ford, Holden and Chrysler paid the price in anti-pollution and horsepower limits and the Australian muscle car era in Australia came to an end.

The Falcon is actually based on the US Falcon, it has a mustang floor pan and an American engine gearbox and diff, so its an American car made by an American company as much as Holden Torana is an American general Motors product and 1971 Chevy Vega inspired, it does have some Aussie input in it however with the 308 and the gearbox. The heads on original 351 GT Phase 3 Falcons were 4 V with huge ports. Im unsure if these heads were available in the US or not.

Camera car is an XY Falcon. Near certain a mockup as real GTs are way to expensive to race.GpN racing is for pre 72 Touring Cars. Mustangs are the head of the pack as they are fairly light and have less drag than the Australian classics. The XYs are about as aerodynamic as a block of flats. PI requires speed, a light car with decent aero will always be faster. When this is I dont know, I recognise some of those cars. By the handling I expect they are on bias belt Hoosier tyres which to me always defied logic as they are terrible. Many used Yokohama radials which while not much faster over a lap were far easier to drive on. And far more consistent. But for some reason Yokohama stopped making the suitable sizes. America cannot make any decent tyres!! Blue Mustang is a Boss 302. Stuart Barnes, lovely car but average driver. Was a SA local car now gone interstate. Find some Sports Sedans at PI. A lot faster and wilder. I used to race them. Near 600hp and weighed 1010 kilos with me in it.

I definitely agree with your comments on XY falcons, especially at P.I. Remembering the days pre-1978 of closed club circuit racing at Phillip Island, and all the dirt roads that we ‘locals’ used to thrash on, and those people who encouraged those exploits is still rather amusing for me - especially because some folks just don’t think old ladies of almost sixty two years old can remember anything at all of their very early motorsport days, including what a goat track the Phillip Island motor racing circuit became after Len Lukey sold it. Gone is the old chickory kiln that served us as the main race office for decades; gone are the days of camping for weekends of closed club meetings; now the place is an overly commercialised millionaires club. Progress is one thing - a bit of respect for motorsport pioneer’s would go a bloody long way!

This is a proper race track especially made for motorbikes, Rossi won there many times. It's not like a NASCAR circle tracks, so boring.

These modern day " masters " cars are NOT original and run modern mechanicals and power trains. Back in the day, the Falcon GT HO 's had their own imperious sound that every car lover loved.....very different to these cars. The Falcon GT's were similar in performance to the Amrrican equivelant, but the GTHO's were improved everywhere possible to win Bathurst carrying the extra weight of the 50 gallon fuel tank. The driver in this video appears to be steering the beast with the steering wheel.......like every other loser. Out of all the drivers who raced the GTHO's only 2 were ever really quick in them......Allan Moffit and John Goss. These cars were too big and too heavy to race, and not quick with normal driving styles. Moffat and Goss both used the steering wheel to set up the corner, and then used the engines torque to steer......yet both drivers were able to make the tyres last. The top level touring cars and drivers ( cars we could buy and drive on the roads ) were often QUICKER than the improved sports sedans ( same cars with bigger race engines and race brakes / suspension ). Brock was a driving geniouse and super star, but read up on Moffats true beginnings , his start in a dealer bought show room Lotus Cortina GT road car ( 50 hp less than the factory race Cortinas ), then his first time in a Cologne Capri 3100 on an American track he had never raced on before...... ( a privateers race car ) ....he made the Ford factory Capri's and drivers look like turtles as well as the No2 Turbo BMW. The No1 BMW had to drive past the red line to stay ahead of Moffat in the much slower car. Im short, Brocks Australian career in the best prepared Race Cars is unrivaled, but Moffats Internatiomal career in slow privateers cars is even better. Their is videos of Moffat embarrassing V8 muscle cars in America, driving his American Cortina GT. lol

I’d hate to tell all my American brothers, the American V8s weren’t able to survive against the Aussie vehicles as ours out powered them all especially on cornering and especially on the straights.

from my opinion if you really want some decent Aussie cars, the HT Premier, FC Holden and EH Holden's are my go to

All are iconic cars, but none are “muscle cars”. From that list only the HT had a V8 option… although the 350 was a wicked choice!
