In my language (Slovenian) škoda means damage, pitty, shame. People don't realize or admit Czeckoslovakia was an industrial superpower before WW2. Without their tanks Germany probably wouldn't be able to conquer France. Just check at Panzer 38. It was a Chechoslovakian tank adopted by Wehrmacht, they were in use untill the end of the war. Few people realize Checkoslovakia was industrial an cultural superpower before the WW2. Germany was industrial, France was cultural power, Checkoslovakia was both. At the end of WW2 they retained their position, Germany transfered a lot of production there and it wasn't destroyed in the war. At the end of the war they had capacities to produce Me-262, the first operational jet fighter in the world. Yugoslavia wanted to purchase them. Even for emerging Israel. The intervention of Soviet Union brought the deal down. Without Soviet intervention European map would be much different now. But they produced a few really remarkable things, regardless. My field is aviation. Nobody will ever produce more gliders of one type than Checkoslovakia. They made a two seat, metal glider, the L-13 Blanik, the most widely produced glider ever, more than 50% of all glider pilots in the world learned their skills on it. They produced the Zlin ''26'' series of aerobatic aeroplanes, Zlin 526, the plane I learned to fly on, was the best aerobatic plane in the world when it appeared in 1965, leter they set new standards and made a blueprint for all modern aerobatic planes when they made a Zlin 50 in the early 1980s. The most widely produced jet trainer in the world, still in use today in many air forces is Aero L-39 Albatros. Škoda was in rank of Mercedes before WW2, Tatra was close to Rolls-Royce then, so, Škoda today doesn't come as a surprise to me, it is just a continuation of the heritage and history, it is a revival. True, they were not widely known and popular, but they were always innovative and quality company, I wish them success. Greetings from Slovenia.

We were an industrial superpower because Austria-Hungary placed so much of their factories and pretty good infrastructure (both railroads and public transit later on) I'm guessing they wanted their lands to look pretty :D This is why the short period of 20 years of the "The First Republic" when we were truly free for the first time is regarded as such a golden era. Yes the war began later but we were truly free only 1918-1938 until the Munich agreement where other powers basically betrayed us . Everyone still wonders what wouldve happened had Edward Beneš decided to fight the betrayal pact .. even though wed have become the agressors for defying it.

Škoda brand is actually the 5th oldest car brand in the world. Funny thing, Tatra, the other czech car manufacturer (makes only trucks today) is the 2nd oldest car brand in the world. We've got some history. In the 30s Tatra made the first ever "aerodynamics-based car, the Tatra 77, shortly followed by Škoda 935 Dynamic and then the rest of the world with their aerodynamic cars.

they forgot to say that Škoda cars were widely sold abroad as police cars, because Škoda offers ready-made cars with the necessary equipment, if you need a police car for a dog, it will already have a cage from the factory, if you need a car suitable for transporting organs, it will already have all the equipment from the factory. It is therefore cheaper for the states to buy Škoda cars than another brand, for which they would still have to install equipment separately. And yes, they also have a bulletproof Škoda Superb to choose from.

The video is mixing ŠKODA industrial works (based mainly in Pilsen) and L&K (based in Mladá Boleslav) companies, the Škoda bought L&K as their car division. Todays the car division is owned by VW while the rest of the heavier production (mainly locomotives and bus/trams) is by company Škoda Transportation. I spent the first twelve years of my life in Czechoslovakia and when we said "to je škoda" we were saying "it's a pity". My understanding about Lamborghini is Lamborghini who was making tractors thought of ideas that would have improved the cars Ferrari was making. Naturally Lamborgini was offended and decided to start making cars better than Ferrari's.

Škoda got behind technologically during the decades of Communism. That is the reason why it was necessary to sell it to someone who was able to modernize everything. That is also the reason why it is not sold in the USA. During 70' 80' and early 90' Škoda was unable to compete with other automakers from the free world. And now, when it is part of the WW it is better to sell only one brand since Cars are somewhat similar.

Here in EU there have repeatedly been rumors of VW executives being angry at Škoda because it tends to offer value that is close to its corresponding VW model for price that is not close, making them look bad. One example I remember is that a VW Passat sized Škoda Superb uses a lot of components from cheaper VW cars like Golf but uses them in the bigger car, making a similar car for less money. Or something to that effect. If this was true when the VW boss flatly refused to entertain the idea of taking Škoda to US market I would imagine something like shared dealership would not fly. Imagine running an established VW dealership and now you are asked to start offerig cars of a different brand but with similar sizes and features that are 20% cheaper than your VW models.

"Škoda" literally means "damage" or "harm". It can however coloquially also be used as "oh well" or "pity" in a statement along the lines of "what a pity". But the company simply bears the name of its de facto founder, Emil Škoda, similar to many other companies (and their names can have various meanings, just look at Ford ;) ), so it really has little relevance to actual meaning of the word.

VW don't even allow Škoda to make good cars :D But for real that's how it goes here with many well-known factories that were bought by Germans after the revolution. In short, they don't want anyone else to make products of at least the same quality as they do. VW had a policy for VW cars to be the basic option for people, with Škoda being the more affordable alternative. However, Škoda gained a strong reputation for reliability, leading to forced artificial reduction in reliability (a pretty common practice here). And now, with competition from cheap cars from China and Dacia, VW's policy seems to be turning Škoda into just another cheap piece of scrap. I can give you another one ridiculous example. That white fat gummy guy with tires... He bought Czech Barum after revolution. So they invested into extention of productin..., and with that they started force Barum to use worse recepture on material on tires than using that white fat gummy guy with tires.

Skoda experimented with sales in Canada in the early '80s. I've owned two. My first car ever was a 1983 120 GL 4 speed. I paid $5,200 for it brand new from the show room. My second was a 1985 120 GLS with a 5 speed gearbox. Both were almost identical except for the grill and headlights. Four round headlights on the 83, and large rectangular single headlights on the 85. I thought the latter was a much improved look. Sadly, Skoda folded in Canada I want to say around 1988. Fun, affordable, and for the most part, very reliable. On weakness they had in my opinion was the in-take exhaust valve layout. On cylinders 2 and 3, the exhaust valves were side by side concentrating the heat in that spot. Cracked cylinder heads or blown head gaskets were common if you drove them too hard.

there were more problems, like orientation of engine, every acceleration every breaking put load on bearings and when they became loose it caused stop of engine on every crossroad, whole construction was more like speaker which was reason they were very noisy inside (latter models changed it a bit, but until Favorit it was not so good). It was most accessible/affordable car here in CzechoSlovakia and we were used to it and lowed it. (proud owner of 1982 Škoda 105L)

For several years now Skoda is the number one importer in Germany, selling by far the most units from any imported car brand. Going by models Octavia and Fabia are most numerous, with Superb and SUV‘s following. BTW most Octavia’s are station wagons, Saloons are quite rare in comparison. And yes, Skodas in general offer the most (leg) room in comparison to VW‘s, trunk is bigger as well. Though they raised prices, they still offer more value. I would prefer buying a Skoda than a VW. In Germany you usually find dealerships at least in different buildings (but with the same owners) or completely separate. Most VW dealers in Germany will offer Skoda Service as well (if they don‘t have a separate Skoda Service nearby).

it's true that Škoda would cannibalize VW's sales. For example Citigo was ready to be sold, but sales were pushed back by a few months, so that VW could release the VW Up first. I don't think we are selling 1+M cars every year anymore or whatever was that goal in the video, since covid, Russian - Ukrainian war and some fire at warehouses / plants hurt the logistics a lot, there were big parking lots around Czech Republic full of Škodas with missing parts and some people were even waiting for 1-2 years for their ordered car to be made. I think we are also pulling out from China slowly, but we are trying to get into new markets like Vietnam, oh yeah India is working out really well so far as well.

The thing is that Škodas have much more premium looking exteriors than VW and maybe even Audi. Fabia consistently makes Golf look very plebeian. Same with Superb and Arteon. And there's even more confusion about VW brands, when you put Seat into this mix. They are typically sportier and better looking than VWs, but have more "boy racer" aura than Škoda and VW, despite internally being really similar. Anyway, no matter how you look at it, VW is often just ends up feeling like the least cool version of same car, despite having just bellow Audi interiors.

Another interesting fact about Škoda: During WWII Škoda company in Plzeň (the one making guns, trains and turbines, not cars) was directed by Albert Goring - brother of Hermann Goring (one of the top 5 Nazzis). Albert was able to save countless lives when he was ordering prisoners from concentration camps to work in Škoda and in same time he let guards of the transports to stop on their way form camp to factory and let the prisoners escape. He also suported (at least by turning blind eye) all the procrastination and laziness of his workors. He let the Škoda rot so bad that by the end of the war Gestapo accually put him on list of enemies to be killed but the war ended before they killed him.

That's just smart business. - The Yeti. Such an allround good car that even Top Gear started doing proper car tests again.

Most people watching in countries outside Norway wont be aware of this reason. Secondly, yes other countries could theoretically do the same with financial incentives of the same magnitude, but practically its not possible since it would either be ruinously expensive or they would face enormous public backlash (the second one would likely happen in the US for example), or both.

@@Helge_Torp Funny part is that Norway is so economically powerful, that it can afford to go electric all the way for its citizens, because relative to the population size, it is disproportionally humongous exporter of fossil fuels (a bit of a "green hypocrisy"). For the rest of the Europe, going full electric is not financially viable for the vast majority of the population. That's why with EU pushing combustion-engine powered cars out with regulations, it seems likely that only top 10-20% wealthiest part of population will afford to own and run a personal vehicle. (as of 2023 ~0.3% of registered vehicles in Czechia are electric)

My comments: @3:40 These bike manufacturers were called Laurin & Klement. Skoda actually bought this company in the mid 1920s and incorporated into the Skoda "empire". Fun fact, many of current models can be purchased in Laurin & Klement trim. @5:06 It is said that companies like Skoda were part of the reason why Hitler didn't want to go to war with Czechoslovakia. He wanted to seize the country with its industrial power still untouched, so that he could utilize for his war effort. @5:47 In 2023 it's actually 30 years now. Also, they announced that they extended their contract and will sponsor Ice Hockey Championship till 2027 (at least). Fun fact, 2023 also market the 20th anniversary of Skoda sponsorship with Tour de France (20 years in a row). @7:51 Yep, think about Skoda the same way you'd think about Siemens :) @8:26 The numbers dropped because of Covid... 2022 Skoda produced less than 800K cars. But it's getting back up @10:10 Now, of course, there is the Skoda Enyaq iV. Fully electric car you can buy @13:13 Well, we shouldn't translate surnames right, but still... :D You could play with it even more. You could say, "That is Skoda". in Czech it is literarily, "To je Škoda", which in the Queen's English would translate as "That's a pitty". @14:12 I heard that VW leaders were actually afraid of Skoda's drive, which lead to measure being put in place to make sure the VW would remain #1 in the VW group and never overtaken by Skoda. Allegedly, this even negatively effected R&D at Skoda, where they were not allowed to develop certain things, because it would make VW look lame. Especially in connection to Octavia and Superb. It would be interesting to learn, why can you buy Skoda in Australia, and not the USA. Is it that the US market is more protective of its "local" brands? @19:19 And the floral design on the bottom part of the logo is a reference to Laurin&Klement who used this motif in their logo prior to the purchase of their company by Skoda. @20:36 The Socialism almost rekt the reputation of the bran completely. In its worst days, Skoda made ugly, unreliable, rust prone cars. But still, a very nice vintage version of a Socialist Skoda 1000 (the 1960s) would cost the same as a brand new Fabia. A delux version of the 1000 could cost the same as a new Superb? Maybe, because they were so poorly made that finding a good one is rare, and/or involves a lot of renovation. Today, Skoda is considered cooler than VW

What you said about Škoda's potentially dipping into VW's sales is probably true to some extension. Škoda's are better looking, have a bigger personality, and for the price you get more of a car than with VWs. The Czech Republic is flooded with them and a lot of people can say: "Yeah, well, it's your national brand, of course there's a lot of them. Look at Romania and Dacias - those are just cheaper Renaults." But over the years, my family has had a lot of cars from both brands (we've had Octavia, Superb, Golf, Passat, Felicia and Touareg) and I can safely say, that Škodas are overall just better. They feel ligter, sportier, are a better place to sit in and are way cheaper than the VW equivalents (especially used models).

Due to opposition from local residents, distrust after 1986 Chernobyl disaster and misinformation and downright lies by greenpeace (greenpeace was lying about technology used for construction of it, as they were saying it will use same technology as Chernobyl, while in reality the computer and electronics systems were made by Siemens, mechanical and metal parts by Skoda. In terms of the name Škoda - the woman in the video explained that there is a meaning difference depending on the capital S or not (it's not even an S, but whatever) - it is not true. Capital letter means only that it is a name (surname, company name etc., it does not change the meaning of the word at al). "too bad" and "damage" translations are correct, it can have both these meanings depending on the context. I don't know about other fellow Czechs, but when I think about Škoda (as a car brand) the true meaning of the word never really strikes to my mind, it is just a name. That's what imo most people think and that's why marketing-wise, meaning doesn't bother anyone, we all know it is a surname. :)

The main problem with most smaller brands is that they take everything from their bigger brothers. Same happened with Yugoslavian cars that were made with a huge influence of the Fiat brand.

last year, I have seen skoda tramways in bratislava. didn't ride one, but they are ingenious. the only low floor tram with real low floor pivoting bogies, which play quite nice with the rails. true, that's the other skoda, but they were once together.

A quick google search told me that they're 29T, which are pretty cool. In Prague, we have a lot of them, but there are still a few of the 14T Škoda with Porsche design which are just plain awful. Still, the best trams are the Tatra T3, fight me! 🙂

@18:30 The local VW dealer here used to sell Audi and even Skoda for a while, but due to some new demands they had to split them up. These days they no longer sell Audi or Skoda. Don't think I've seen a combo dealer for VAG anywhere in like 15+ years now.

1:31 - depends on what you mean by "pure Škoda", but Favorit was AFAIK made in cooperation with Bertone (they were authors of the visual design) and Porsche even back during the communist era of Czechoslovakia, and VW was chosen as a partner for Škoda even earlier, considering the company needed money to even get to make other versions of the car (longer Forman estate variant and Škoda Pickup), as the development of Favorit and prior failed development of advanced Škoda 110 replacements (for which Škoda 120 and 130 became stop-gap solution) financially exhausted the company. By the way, "škoda" also means "pity" or "damage".

in North America they planned to open Skoda dealerships in several states in 2014, but after several negotiations inside of the Volkswagen Group, this did not happen. So the reason could be anything, but the most likely is that they didn't want to compete with themselves within the company...

@ IWrocker The video unfortunately contains all the businesses that were under the Škoda conglomerate. There was a facility dedicated to producing weapons, manufacturing high-quality heavy artillery intended for the battleships of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and armoring some of the British aircraft carriers built before the Second World War. This was the focus of the facility in Plzeň, which even produced parts for nuclear power plants, including reactors. Other mentioned businesses were Škoda as a manufacturer of passenger vehicles from Mladá Boleslav and Škoda in Liberec as a producer of commercial vehicles, later renamed to LIAZ, along with a plant in Slovakia dedicated to the production of small utility vehicles. For the next videos, I would focus on the Škoda 130 RS car .

The wide range of products of a brand that is State owned in a directed economy as opposed to market economy is normal, there is less competition from other brands, and they are usually chosen to produce what the country needs

The models shown are several years old. The Yeti has long been replaced by the Kamiq and Karoq, the Octavia you liked so much was replaced by an entirely new model around 2020, and now the Superb and Kodiaq have just been replaced by new 2024 models. And of course one of the biggest sellers, the Enyaq full EV.

Škoda name is from surname of Emil Škoda. Czech surnames were given after house/farm/city/occupation... in 16-17th century. In Emils case one of his ancestors, made damage on something/someone, and they started calling him Škoda.

7:48 To logo je Škoda Plzeň!!! Auta vyrábí firma LAURIN & KLEMENT!!! That logo is Škoda Pilsen!!! The cars are manufactured by LAURIN & KLEMENT!!! cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%A0koda_(podnik) Škoda was an engineering company founded in Pilsen in 1866 by Emil Škoda. From the original arms factory, Škoda's plants grew to the level of a large metallurgical and engineering concern, which (together with the ČKD, Ringhoffer/Tatra, etc.) was one of the industrial pillars of the then Czechoslovakia and one of the largest exporters. In 1925 it purchased the Mladá Boleslav automobile factory Laurin & Klement,[4] and in 1929 the Avia aircraft factory in Prague, and at the same time it began to industrialize Slovakia by building a massive complex of underground factories for arms production in Dubnica nad Váhom. The concern also owned ore mines, brown coal mines in the Most region and power plants, and had extensive business ties abroad.

When I was working in a factory, making huge crankshafts for boats, we are talking 40 tons just the crankshaft. We were using lathes and other machines all produced by Škoda, in the 1940s. The factory sadly no longer exist.
