The art of transcription: an art of freedom
"After a volume devoted to Bach’s French-influenced keyboard music, I wanted this Italianate programme to demonstrate the mastery with which the young man practised the art of transcription. Thanks to his deep knowledge of Italian orchestral music and the way he could appropriate a style while adapting it to keyboard textures, Bach succeeded in recreating an orchestral universe with the limited resources offered by the solo instrument: a true challenge for a young composer in search of the most diverse methods of making the organ or harpsichord ‘sound’ like an orchestra...
... Before embarking on my work of preparation and recording, I asked myself how I could convey the character of each piece as vividly as possible. The instruments greatly helped me to present a number of extremely varied and unexpected options: the exceptionally warm sound of the historical harpsichord now in the Museo Santa Caterina in Treviso, with its gut strings and its extraordinary variety of stops, especially the teorbino stop, enabled me to find very unusual, shimmering ‘orchestral’ colours." L’art de la transcription : un art de la liberté
« Après un volume consacré à la musique pour clavier de Bach d’influence française, j’ai souhaité que ce volet italien montre avec quelle maîtrise le jeune Bach pratiquait l’art de la transcription. Grâce à une profonde connaissance de la musique italienne pour orchestre, à sa manière de s’approprier un style tout en l’adaptant à une écriture pour clavier, Bach a su recréer un univers orchestral avec les moyens limités qu’offre l’instrument soliste : un véritable défi pour un jeune compositeur à la recherche des procédés les plus divers pour faire “sonner” l’orgue ou le clavecin comme un orchestre...
... Avant d’entamer ce travail et de l’enregistrer, je me posais la question de savoir comment j’allais pouvoir restituer de façon vivante le caractère de chaque pièce. Les instruments m’ont considérablement aidé pour proposer des options extrêmement variées et insoupçonnées : le son très chaleureux du clavecin historique du musée Santa Caterina de Trévise, avec ses cordes en boyau et une variété extraordinaire de jeux, notamment celui du teorbino, m’ont permis de trouver des couleurs “orchestrales” très chatoyantes et inhabituelles. » Benjamin Alard
