China suffered huge casualties in WWII fighting against 2 million Japanese troops, the US only hit around 100,000 Japanese troops and got the biggest credit for 2 atomic bombs. In the international community, it is generally recognized that the United States and the Soviet Union defeated Japan, while China, which contributed the most and sacrificed the most, is forgotten. And many of the Japanese war criminals who killed and tortured Chinese got away with it, which is why China and Japan haven't completely reconciled like Germany and France, and why many Chinese still hate Japan. The reason is that the Japanese don't really apologize.

Yes lot of Chinese died. But winning the war is not about getting the most of your own ppl killed. War is won by losing less than your enemy while taking their territories. By taking the enemy's territories the war is won. In that aspect china has zero contributions perhaps negative contributions coz so many Chinese surrendered and working for Japan. Millions of Chinese troops are under Japanese command in Japanese conquered Chinese territories.

Japan learned from the Western industrial revolution earlier than China. While China was still in the agricultural civilization, Japan tried to invade and control China. This was a war with cannons, machine guns, swords and bows. Although the ending was tragic, However, the advanced Japanese military power failed in the end. I think its pointless, these atrocities always happened and will keep happening in every war, from Alexander the great to Genghis Khan to the Vietnam war. Did any US soldier pay for Hiroshima or Nagasaki, or the bombardment of Dresden or Tokyo? No, throwing bombs or even nukes on civilians may not be war crimes if you're in the "right side". The winners always dictate history and in order to win, commiting atrocities may be beneficial. The only way to prevent it from happening is peace.

Such is my opinion: When you try to conquer a nation you either literally conquer every inch of its land or you force its government to surrender and officially end it. China is too large for Japan to literally conquer every inch of it. And whatever you may say about Jiang Jieshi, he never surrendered to Japan, which force Japan has to keep on fighting. Chiang Kaishek never surrendered to Japan, western chinese islamic warlords remained loyal to Chiang and still supported the KMT against Japan, sending more western chinese troops to central china, then in the east, volunteer chinese forces practiced sabotage against Japanese forces. Some notes from me: You mentioned after the describing the battle of Changsha and how the Japanese never conquered it, which is incorrect as it fell to Japan in 1944 with the Ichi-Go offensive. An additional thing I feel should have been mentioned was how the Japanese in total attacked Changsha four times. First in 1939 with the initial failed offensive, a second offensive between september and october in 1941, a third spoiling offensive between december 1941 and January 1942 in order to stop the Chinese from reinforcing the British in Hong Kong, and finally the fourth attack in 1944 in which the city finally fell. Regarding the Ichi-Go offensive, it wasn't exactly that Chiang didn't expect an offensive on the main front, but more of him expecting it to come from the south and not the main front, if this video by Potential History on the matter is correct: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmXddWefqLpgmdU (Alternatively it could have been mentioned on this video as well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q16keoKKftd8Z9k). As such not only did the KMT have its best forces spread out in Xinjiang and Burma, additionally the Chinese forces left to defend the main Hunan front were instead initially prepared for an offensive from a different direction. Regarding Joseph Stillwell, he was basically the wrong person for the China front, with him sowing distrust of the Chinese towards the US, he almost caused some of the best Chinese troops in Burma to be destroyed under his command and he even wanted to coup the Chiang and turn China to an US puppet, before his dismissal, as told in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/inOxi6R5aM2Sj5Y. In short Stillwell was a good army driller who was good at drilling the troops and training them basically, but he sucked as much as one could while leading troops in combat and basically everything that he was assigned to do. In the end the Chinese would only really begin enjoying more success once Stillwell was replaced by the much more fit for the role Wedemeyer. Connecting to Wedemeyer, and the late war Chinese counter offensives, this US army history paper describing said late war offensives: history.army.mil/html/books/072/72-39/CMH_Pub_72-39.pdf. Now to summarise the things told in this paper; following the appointment of Wedemeyer to leading the US mission in China, an ALPHA force planned to encompass began to be trained, which would constist of 36 US trained and advised divisions, which was a compromise owing to Chiang's fear that the communists would attempt to convert the troops in the inevitable civil war. These troops began to be trained under the supervision of Wedemeyer and thanks to his efforts in building up positive relations with the Chinese, he succeeded in having all of the Chinese troops of the ALPHA force being placed under US guidance, with all Chinese officers who refused to follow American instructions/guidance ending up getting replaced. As these forces were training in south western China, Ichi-Go was launched and the ALPHA force was in no way ready, due to which Wedemeyer relied on Chenault's 14th airforce to bomb Japanese supply lines in order to buy time for training and supplying the ALPHA force, combined with the Burma offensive and completion of the Ledo/Stillwell road promising expanded supply shipments from India. Thanks to the disruption efforts the Chenaults fourteenth airforce, the Japanese attack on western Hunan which you mentioned already struggling from disrupted supply. Meanwhile the Chinese troops of the ALPHA force had thanks to Wedemeyer's efforts become much better supplied with reliable food and ammo supply, in addition to an improved supply situation allowing for continued operations of the fourteenth airforce and better radio integration making communication more efficient than before. The Japanese attacked western Hunan near the Chihchiang airfield in January 1945, where the Chinese forces lacking the full training due to time constraints from the Japanese offensive were forced to face the Japanese attacking force. Following a counteroffensive plan being approved by Chiang, the battle became a masterpiece of Chinese defensive strategy, where the Japanese force attacked the force in the center, while the flanking armies moved behind the Japanese force to strike its rear and supplies, forcing the Japanese to eventually retreat due to their supply lines being compromised by the flanking enemy divisions and being under attack from all sides. Following this stunning success, operation Carbonado to liberate southern China was conceived where the Chinese forced spearheaded by the ALPHA force would push first the former French consession of Fort Bayard (modern day Zhanjiang) through which further supplies could be shipped through the recently liberated Philippines, followed by furhter offensives northwards, while simultaneously the Japanese were retreating already all the way to the Yangtze due to a worsening situation. I hope you are able to make a truly in depth explanation of how the Communists won the Chinese civil war in the next episode, as all the videos on it seem to describe how there was combat in Manchuria, followed by a rapid Communist push south that broke the Nationalists. I truly need a good explanation of how the communists won in China, that brings all the aspects together beautifully, and I am hoping that you can provide that.

34:40 Chiang was not able to take his elite troops from Burma which he should have been in Southern China. The UN/United States and Britain demanded Chiang “play his part” in the “international effort” against the Japanese by saving the European colony in Burma (to appease Britain). Chiang demanded Stilwell to send those troops but was not allowed. So the inexperienced distrustful troops ended up getting slaughtered in southern China. When Stilwell visited Guilin airfield, he realized his mistake but still blamed Chiang despite the fact it was US Mis judgement of Chinese desperation to defend their own country. One of the greatest last stands in ww2 came from Ichi-go, in the 44 day seige of hengyang where the Japanese were impressed by the Chinese defenders.

From mid 1941 to the end of WW2, the borders between the Soviet Union and China were closed off and no Allied supply could get through to China that way because the Soviets had a pact with the Japanese. With the coastal regions also under Japanese control, the only route Allied supplies and weapons could be delivered to China was through British Burma. That was why it was so critical for China and the other Allied powers to keep the Japanese away from Burma. If the Japanese managed to block off this route as well, China would be completely isolated. Chinese forces without Allied supplies and support would be unlikely to hold central China.

yes, the japanese feared the nationalist elite units the most. thats why they always had to use large numbers of their soldiers to attack them. such as battle of hengyang, battle of changde, and a sub -battle in the second battle of changsha. The battle of Chunhuashan, where the japanese sent their elite 3rd, 6th and part of the 4th divisions to try to annihilate the Chinese 74th army. But only for both sides to suffer huge casualties. If only our leader who was lead poisoned by the americans saved our elite german trained units in the battle of shanghai, instead of having them heroically fight to the death.

The supply was mostly controlled by Stillwell before he went away and mainly purposed for US air forces in China. No heavy vehicles or equipment could be shipped in. After USA moved away from Operation Matterhorn in March 1945, finally started to focus on supplying the Chinese army, the war was near to the end. British presence in Burma was mainly for protecting its base in Bangladesh for counter-attack later in 1944, not for China. Over the whole time, US support played a insignificant role, due to the fact that China was on the remote end of US communication.

So one of the main aspects of the war with china that is overlooked is the chaos of japanese politicis. In 1912 when emperor Meji died, his son was intellectually disabled leaving a massive power vacuum. While the military mainly aimed to fill this they were heavily split not only between Navy vs Army, but even within their was immense and intense factionalism. The functional result is that from 1912 all the way until 1940 when the imperial family made a serious effort to recentralize control, the Japanese leadership was insanely divided and in constant disputes and competition. The majority of military operations throughout this time were not deliberately planned long term invasions, but mostly small segmented decisions made by specific factions, with high command trying to do what they could with whatever landed in their lap. For example when the radical faction failed to gain power in HQ, the leader instead got himself posted to one of the field armies on the mainland (this may have either been a consolation prize, or an effort to keep him away from Tokyo). He then conspired with the other field army on the continent to launch the invasion of Manchuria. Since this was always his aim he figured if he can't take Tokyo he would just invade china anyway. Documents found that HQ was furious, but the operations success largely blocked them from taking major action against the generals. What becomes most significant however is that by 1939 the relationship between high command and field generals was at a tipping point. So many officers kept taking action without orders, that ultimatly HQ ordered that new operations would no longer recieve support. At Kolkhan gol for example Japanese intel discovered the soviet plans, but were forbidden from providing it to the army group, essentially leaving them to be surrounded and destroyed. Along with similar actions in china, high command finally reigned in the generals, but they were left in an awkward spot; the military failures weakened the armies political position allowing the navy to gain dominance and worse they feared losing control in china again if they overinvested into the army there. This resulted in the pacific plan; instead of reinforcing the army in China proper focus on disrupting their supplies. They started with the invasion of French Indochina, but this would lead to the US cutting off oil supplies and ultimatly pearl harbor. Put in other words from late 1939 Japan largely avoided trying to directly win on the battlefield in china, sending few reinforcements and conducting very little offensive operations until 44 and that only to connect with Burma/Indochina. At peak China only had around 1/6th of the Japanese military forces.

Taiwan, the last holdout of the Ming, fell in 1683. Whatever remnants there were evaded the Manchus fled to Vietnam. One could claim that it began earlier with Nurhaci's war against the other Manchu groups favoured and promoted by Ming. They battled from 1582 to 1587. Whether 100 years or 75 , the Manchus certainly were tenacious.
