Episode 192. Likely this will have a strong appeal to Jack fans. For me, it is not what I am looking for in a Rye and comes up short. Have you tried this? Do you enjoy it, and how does the Single Barrel Rye compare? Thanks! #whiskyfabric#whiskytube#whiskyneighbour

It's rare to see any whisky review that's unequivocally negative. So often reviewers will speak in a way that you have to decode their dislike. Not in this case. I appreciate the directness.

Great notes there Jon and pretty similar to what I recall with this one. Perhaps I enjoy the sweeter the notes a bit more (plus I love the banana thing), and they do make this a tad different than most ryes. I haven't had this in a while, but I have quite enjoyed it in the past. I'd only ever pick it up on offer though. Definitely not in the same league as the barrel proof rye, that's for sure. Cheers Jon.

Jon! I gotta say, you and I are on two different ends of the spectrum on this one! I was really surprised to hear your review, as this is one of my favourite discoveries of 2019! I'll agree with you that it's different...outside the box for a rye, but I just love it! And usually my taste buds seem to align with your other reviews. I encourage you to pick up the cask strength single barrel rye from JD...a truly magnificent whiskey, according to my experience, and verified in a blind tasting with my whiskey group. Cheers Jon, keep giving us your honest reviews!

Jon, I know your mainly a whisky man, however I have a suggestion, perhaps not to review on the channel but for your personal enjoyment. I think you would really enjoy Smith & Cross Jamaican navy strength rum. The level and depth of spices in there are absolutely incredible. Ginger and a whole array of baking spices meld together with a touch of tropical fruit, wood char smokiness, and a breadiness. It’s bottled at 57% and unchillfiltered for only 40 bucks here in Toronto. It’s also not overly sweet, because unlike some other rims, they don’t add any sugar or other crap to it, all natural. I mainly drink whisky but this is one aged spirit I highly recommend it based on your palate.
@WhiskyNeighbour
@WhiskyNeighbour 4 жыл бұрын
I will certainly keep a lookout for it. Rum has been a little too sweet for me, but you mention this is held in check. Interesting!
@francescoalbanese9215
@francescoalbanese9215 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, maybe it’s the high presence of the other flavours, but the sweetness is not too high in this rum. About the same as your average bourbon, maybe very slightly higher. Ironically I think it’s quite a bit less sweet than pike creek rum cask! I no longer buy rums that add sugar or other flavourings to them, and I thoroughly do my research before buying a rum.

I was going to try this a few months ago, but when I couldn't find it I got the single barrell instead. All I can say about that whiskey is that for someone who's not really a big fan of Jack Daniels, it was the best Jack I've tried so far, but compared to other American rye whiskies it wasn't that great.

A very similar sense regarding palate here, for me the aroma is a ripe banana liqueur with taste having some spice, more liqueur and wood; although I'm not put off too much by it (and would rate it slightly higher). Missing a bit of depth and a punchier finish. Agree it's not a very typical rye whiskey but I bought it here in Poland for a reasonable price back in July - it's quite affordable compared to most other ryes here - and it has gone quickly since then. Have yet to try the Single Barrel version as well as the (very promising) Lot40!

I bought a bottle upon its release, and I still have half left as it sits on the shelf. Now I myself am in the JD fanclub, but part of the reason I’ve left it alone is because I have so many other ryes I love (many of which, this channel pointed me towards). The other part of the reason is that I like how it looks next to the No. 2, 3, 5, and normal 7. A little shelf-flex is about all it’s good for; I find myself reaching for the Alberta Premium or Lot 40 cask strength bottles every time over this choice. Perhaps if it tasted more like the Basil Hayden “Two by Two Rye” and was a rye/bourbon blend it would have been more successful?

I am glad you have a full line up, there is some satisfaction with seeing a great line up on the shelf. I knew this would be a controversial episode, but I wanted to be true to my palate. For this, it is just too much banana for me in whisky. I hope you are having an excellent summer!

Hi Jon, I specially have tried it again to refresh the memories. Agree with you that it is not classic rye and not the best example of rye. I feel it like improved and refined JD №7, it has flavors that JD regular lacks, in this way I suppose it is ok

@@WhiskyNeighbour It's a very good thing that there are still loads of alternatives on the shelf, at least locally. Pikesville is easy to get as well as the whole range of Alberta Premium... I seem to find myself going through a lot of Canadian Whisky this year just because I'm perceiving lots of great flavors and good value for the money. I'm sipping on some Forty Creek Victory right now, and think I'll follow it up with a bit of Pike Creek 21 Oloroso, or should I go for Gooderham & Worts 49 Wellington? Decisions before bed...
