As far as I know, he has set the bar so high in terms of real stuff being done with him at the helm. The Top Gun 2 Trailer? I can't help that that is a play of his life. He is one of the few, the last of the real Mavericks of Hollywood where he does his own stunts, minimizes on CGI and makes it entertaining and real for the people he is performing to.
@dashrirprock4 жыл бұрын
While he does a lot of his stunts, I'd be shocked if they had him doing the driving in that wide-shot where we see his car thread its way through oncoming traffic. That was likely a professional driver, not because Cruise can't do it, but because what's the point? You're not going to see the actor's face, so the insurance company would never allow it.

@Donald Trump I'm sure the press-releases say it's him; they're selling a movie. Cruise is impressive, but, no, he's not as capable of driving as ANY stunt double. The director or producers can die midway through a shoot and be replaced. The star cannot die (or get injured) because it will delay production. Some insurance companies will not allow movie stars currently filming from riding motorcycles on their own time.

Love this car chase. McQuarrie is an underrated action director, kind of old school. Which is a good thing. It's a great to see a modern movie where the car chase seems to have been thought through on a shot by shot basis, and not just cobbled together in the editing room from a random mess of cuts. It's always clear where everything is in relation to the world around it, making the action easy to follow, but no less thrilling because of it. Knuckleheads like Olivier Megaton could learn a thing or two about directing from this scene.

This has to be one of my favorite car chases in the film industry to date. Right up there with Steve McQueen in Bullitt, Gone in 60 Seconds (both of them), White Lightning, Cobra and Ronin. I loved the way they shot this chase. You could feel the raw emotion come through and had no music to distract you. The lead up to the chase was done perfectly too. Tom cruise rolling up in the 1970 Chevelle SS and just having a stare down with the detective built alot of suspense.

Christopher McQuarrie really knows how to use film as a visual medium. The first 7 minutes of this movie is done without a single line of dialogue and yet you still know everything that's going on. Same thing here. There's maybe, what? Two lines in this whole sequence? Yet everything flows in such a way that's easy to follow and interesting. Everything relies on the actors performances and the incredible stunt work for this to work as well as it does. The lack of music accentuates the sound design and adds to the intensity. And seeing how much of the driving they're actually doing gives it a sense of realism you don't often get in your modern day blockbuster. And topping things off, it's a high stakes situation that's gripping from beginning to end that somehow, miraculously, manages to pepper in some humor without it detracting from the seriousness of the story. What a sequence. What a fucking film.
