need i be the elephant in the room??? reaching under a vehicle to insert a stand is just as dangerous as not using one. the only difference is the amount of exposure to the hazard. what happens if it drops while you are placing the stand before it in place???

That is personal rule, that I live by. I still remember when I was about 16 years old or so, my best friend at the time, I was at their house one day. And his dad just happened to be working on his Olds Cutlass Ciera, about an '89 model or so. Anyhow when we came back outside the house to leave, the car had fallen off the jack and pinned him under the car, not even sure how long he had been like that. But we had to rush over there and try and get the car lifted back off his chest. Luckily, he wasn't too badly injured. I think he might of broken a rib, but all things considered, he got pretty lucky.

@@Cheepchipsable Depending on how deep I am under the car, at my own house, if no part of me can get pinned and it's a light looksee or changing a tire, I do it on the jack. If I'm doing something quick like an inspection where my head is in the wheel well, I put a stand under but don't lower on to it. If I'm putting my body actually under the car where it would get pinned, it's a jackstand with full weight, plus the jack taking up a hair of weight, just enough to stay put. I don't play where it comes to getting pinned. So he noticed he was closer to the stand, and checked it, before realizing it was there by the book. So Ray still got him in a way, and hopefully he realizes it's not just a joke.

Just as a reminder: If you have jack stands from Harbor Freight, there is a recall on some of them from about 2 years ago. Just search "Harbor Freight jack stand recall" The reason I remind people is because I had a set of mine fail. Fortunately I wasn't under the truck when it happened. It was up on 4 stands and I had wood blocks under the wheels just in case, but when the stands in the front let go it rolled forward off the blocks and all four wheels ended up on the ground. The E-brake was on but did nothing until the rear was on the ground already.

SAFETY is No.1 priority. My brother had just jacked up the back of his car under the tow-bar. He was about to go underneath when a neighbour shouted us across the road. Whilst we were talking there was an almighty crash - the jack just collapsed. This was a professional workshop trolley jack! NEVER go under a car without additional support - use ramps if not removing wheels. ALWAYS think "what would happen if the jack failed"? Wheel chocks are also recommended even if you leave the car in gear/park with handbrake on.

I am on a regular bases like to day while i am getting a motor in another city, call the shop to see how my 2 guys are doing one had an emergency doctor appointment with the wife while my other mechanic is there alone pulling a motor. Ray, You are the BEST mechanic I have ever had the pleasure to watch. This is not a loss for you. It's however a great loss to that shop. This is a great opportunity for you now to move ahead and know you are just one more step to you owning your own shop. I am certain that the business that you will create will be a benefit to all who need QUALITY workmanship. That is what I have always seen from you Sir. You are valuable credit to the trade. What you have taught to so many is incredible. I included myself in that. You have taught me so much. Thank you. I pray this change you will know is part of a greater plan. One that will benefit you on many levels. Again the best is yet to come. Keep the faith.

My first lesson about the danger of not using jack stands was my boss putting a styrofoam cooler under the car, then challenging me to yank it out before he could let the jack down, after which he said, "Imagine if that were tour head." I was wondering whereabouts in Florida you are. The character of the scenery on your test drives looks familiar. I moved there in '75 from Cleveland, Ohio, where I worked at Rick Case Honda. I worked at Sports Car South in Hollywood (long gone now, MG, Fiat, Alfa dealer), Miami Honda, Golden Wrench, South Broward Import Service, and finally Acura of South Florida. In '95 I enrolled in the computer electronics program at Sheridan Vo Tech, then took some Microsoft certification courses, after which I got a job in IT and moved away. I have family in Boca Raton and Del Ray Beach. I really enjoy your videos and like your style. Kudos!

Jacked up a buddies car, at work, and put a block under the axle just enough so the rear tire was off the ground. He got in his car to go home and it would not move just the tire would spin. He got out of his car spitting mad because his car was 'broken'. Then he saw us laughing our A**s off. He looked under his car and didn't know whether to laugh or get mad at us. It was our way of telling him welcome to the team.

Ray, I worked at a service station back in the eights and this guy was jacking up a car with no jack stand. We started to go over and tell him that he was not allowed to do that on the premises. And just as he was pulling his head out from under the car it fell and shaved the right side of his head and he suffered major injuries to his right ear. It was awful.

as a retired physician I had the misfortune of pronouncing death in two episodes of cars falling on guys working on them. As a car hobbyist I developed my rule of not getting under a car that is not supported by TWO separate methods - jack & jack stands, jackstands & couple of staked tires, etc. Be careful out there. Exactly. I wouldn't trust my life to just a jackstand either. Especially with this vehicle I didn't see any wheel chocks. Without chocks not much stopping it from rolling a bit and toppling the jack if something bumps the vehicle etc. Cars can fall off a lift too, there's a video on YT here somewhere of a fairly new Corvette falling off a lift, don't think anyone got hurt, but did a huge amount of damage to all that fiberglass...

Happened to me when I was 16, that was 50 years as go. Jacked up my project nash metropolitan with it's old donkey screw jack, took off the rear tire to work on the brakes, left to get tools. Came back c as r on the ground, screw jack just stripped out its threads. Always double blocked last 50 years, still have all my toes, hands, fingers etc.

I bought 2 huge tool boxes at an auction. One had 6" tall spacers made for car jacks. They were made from a piece of 1" diameter round bar and some heavy wall sections of 1" ID pipe. They fit between the jack and the jack saddle for those times you need a taller jack. And for those occasions, I made up large wood blocks to set the jack stands on so they are not maxed out.

Young enough he hasn't had a car come down on him yet. Once it happens, you use multiple jackstands. Had a cinderblock blow on me when I was a teenager, and I was able to get clear. Made an impression on me. Still have the jackstands I bought immediately after. They're the original Harbor freight heavy ones, HF had just started selling in the back of Hot Rod Magazine. I'm 60 now. Still the best jackstands I own. Keep pushing this, it may save someone.

Squeamish people avoid this comment!!! This is in reference to the tech sitting with his legs under the vehicle... There's an old movie series called "Faces of Death". If you've ever seen 1, you know some scenes get imprinted into your brain & you can never forget them. Well...there's a scene in Faces of Death Part 4 where a guy is in a junkyard working on the front suspension. He has his legs under the vehicle when the cylinder block collapses. The front disk cuts his leg 99% off as it lands on his leg below the kneecap. Every time I see someone sitting the way the tech in the video above was at the end, I get that scene running through my head. I will NEVER sit like that while working on a car. Not even with 5 jack stands all braced. Nope, nada, hell no!!! Be safe!
