That started out as the gnarliest piece of wood I ever seen, and I feared for your life when you first turned the lathe on with so many kickers! But wow did it turn out gorgeous!! Good job

iam 72 been turning large things sence i was 10 Why dont U trim back many of the roots Etc. before U turn the item it will look the same.Or do U leave things sticking out of your work before turning so people will watch U R site woundering if U R going to get some of your teeth knocked out or get U R face cut of if the item comes apart.I glue up Diff. woods like cider ,oal ,maple plus other dark words ive turned bowels up to 12" across after I cut the work semi round on a band saw,Things come out very pretty.I use to make clocks for LL Bean in Freeport Maine

Wow. What a waste of 62 years. How could you have been turning all that time and not understand what you just saw. No it’s not for effect. It’s because it the right approach. You’ll notice that I turn the piece between centre, this allows you to adjust the axis of rotation based on what you see as you begin to reduce the work piece. I leave plenty “meat on the bones” when I trim the piece down to ensure I do not cut off too much with the saw. As I turn a piece like this I’m thinking forward to how it will fit in the form and what the composition of wood to resin will look like. It is not just hit and hope. Wood turning is a reductive process and it requires planning and considering as you go.
