@@JacobandJennyTravel There's an inversion going on and wind is pretty strong on top of the significantly colder stagnant air. Saariselkä is at higher elevation and close to this inversion boundary, windchill is probably pretty bad. At the Vuotso village 35km to south it's calm there but temperature is 10 degrees lower.

-11? I thought it was actually cold. 😄 It's been as cold as -28 here in southern central Finland this week. It's now -44 in Enontekiö, which is just about as north as Saariselkä...

"Fun" fact, most wood houses in Finland are painted red. It's because houses used to be painted with a paint made of reddish clay(biproduct of mining iron) which made them red. And that tradition has continued to this day even though paint isn't made out of clay anymore.

To add: red is mimicing bricks, because wood was seen as cheap material. Red color was also seen a bit redneckish and lower class, so people with more wealth, edu ation and social status used yellow paint, like the mansion where vicar used to live.

@sakatt41 No original place here. Falun of course is the biggest producer as the mine was biggest in Europe. But Falun red is more bright and little orange, because it comes from copper not from iron as most of the paints. And it isn't clay, but copper/iron shale that comes as a byproduct of ore.

Ivalo is nearest town, you should visit 35km+ north from Saariselkä. There is lot of stores etc :) Now you can experience the coldest weather there too.

Up by utsjoki they have the northernmost liquor store and post office in the EU and the northernmost rock i think? And kirkenes, which is like a little finnish town in Norway by the sea. I did a vacation with Aurora Holidays and it was so incredible up there in the very North!

Hey! It's nice to follow the adventures of the two of you and I'm happy to see you in my home country of Finland. It's funny that 90% of the videos are snow and cold, you rarely see people, but that's really the situation in the North. Come visit sometime in the summer, when it's +25 degrees here and people are clearly in a good mood after the miserable cold. Welcome back to Finland! I’m so glad you have enjoyed your stay here. Some sauna tips: (Maybe you know these already but oh well), You are usually supposed to have a quick shower before you go into sauna, sauna is a place where you go already clean. If the heat gets too much for Jenny she can sit on the lower bench. Lower benches are meant for Finnish kids and foreigners.😅 Also, sauna is a place for calm relaxation, 80 degrees Celsius is hot enough to start your sauna. And you can throw “löyly” slowly, little by little so the heat won’t get too hot too quickly and you can spend more time in there. Rule of thumb: If you’re not pink as a piglet when you come out then you didn’t get enough of the sauna.😊

Wow ! You guys are so brave ! As a native I never go out to swim in the snow or lake. I think you both recognise that "after sauna feeling", it´s so relaxed, casual feeling both inside and outside. In Finland we understand this already as child , my granma was born in sauna, it was not rare by the time she was born 1897 . What a fine footage, waiting for more. Take care .

If you were here this week, good luck !!! Sunday was probably the warmest, Monday about the same but Tuesday onwards has been absolutely bitter. Wind chills in the mid -30c, I think it hit -40 once. Absolutely frigid and quick tip, mittens are much warmer than gloves by a lot and also your scarves were being worn incorrectly. They should be put above the nose barely under your eyes and then tied around the back. In these temps, zero skin should be exposed minus your eyes! I was there Monday/Tuesday (in Rovaniemi but I looked at Saariselka weather and it was about the same, if not much colder due to the lower wind chill) and dressed correctly I was still freezing! Good luck lol!!

Tube bandanas are very versatile, i have one around my neck and when i need extra layer for my face, it is easy to pull. It also allows to open the jacket a bit when it gets too hot without exposing throat. Getting too hot is common problem, when you stand still it is totally different from doing something.. and you need something for both. I never leave home without one these days. Tiny piece of fabric but so freaking handy.

Go Jacob! Not many Finns can stay in the snow like that. Or at least like to! Very "cool". I live in an apartment building in a town, where we have our own sauna in the apartment, but no easy access to snow. Instead when there's clean snow outside we carry a large bucket of it into the sauna, and just throw it on ourselves or whatever. It does not melt all that fast, especially if you keep the bucket on the lowest bench of the sauna. A good "backup" way of doing snow treatment.

Remeber on layering clothing to not put too many socks to your boots as it is the air that keeps them insulated and if you put them too tight there cant be any air, same goes to all layering :) Merino wool next to skin, t shirt over that some air trapping clothing and then jacket and pants to combat wind :) Sometimes less can be more :) Bet you knew these but someone else can find this info useful aswell. Btw courious to know what made Finland your first place to visit?

Saariselkä "town" or village is made for tourists, skiers and hikers, there are very few permanent residents there. The nearest real town is Ivalo, the center of Inari municipality.

I do the same thing warming up the sauna and sit in it. I do that after I am done and it is all dry. Oh dressing tip when putting on your snow boots unzip your pants, makes it easier to maneuver then zip everything up.

I'm glad to see you guys enjoying the snow and sauna combination. You'd probably be surprised that swimming in a frozen lake (ice hole) feels actually a more gentle way to enjoy the sauna. The below zero snow almost feels painful and almost like a burning sensation in comparison. Spending a minute shoulders deep in the lake and having a sauna gives a definitive endorphin rush. Also, from 60°C to 80° is a perfect time to get the moist warmth while having a cold one before taking the first plunge. 😉👍

Yeah, it's a global weather anomaly, in a sense that at at least a couple of days ago from the time I'm writing this, Finland and Scandinavia was the *only* region in the world that was colder than average. All the rest showed as warmer than average on the map. In my home town it was -36°C, which was the coldest that I have ever experienced if my memory serves me right.

How do I explain this... Put the scarf on you backwards. Put the middle part on your face just above your nose, under your eyes, wrap it behind your neck and tie it in front. That way it stays nicely on your face and protects it from cold.

Snow chrystals has more shapes during cold times. Thats one reason they seems nice - and sounds more when walking in -30 compared to -5 celsius. In cold those many little parts of flakes breaks underfoot and shatter. At milder temperatures, there are fewer and weaker parts of snow flakes, and when approaching zero, the pressure underfoot gets some of chrystal parts melted and reduces crunching sounds still more.

Nice! I think when you were in Rovaniemi and later Levi, many Finns recommended you to visit Saariselkä and now you got there! I have been there only in summer and autumn when the place looks quite different :) I saw from the forecast that in friday there will be even -27°C in Saariselkä. I of course don't know if you are still there and when this video was recorded. It's quite cold here south at the moment too, almost -20°C, but fortunately it will be warmer next week.

You should have a good parka/down jacket with big hood. The hood will protect your face from frost bites if it is really cold. You should not use those gloves. You should use mittens like Hestra Hali ski mittens. They are super warm and won’t get wet from snow. Underneath those mittens you could have Hestra merino wool touch liners. They are thin and you can easily operate your camera gear or your phones.

2:00 Thats a bad mistake. If it really is that cold you should not cover your mouth/nose because of your breath will make the scarf wet and it'll most definitely freeze and then you cant even use it to comfortably cover your neck.

It is because of the Gulf stream, why it is more moderate temperatures on the coast of Norway, even if it was more north than Saariselkä. Winters are infamously harsh and brutal in northern Lapland+ due to Polar Night, when the Sun wont go up at all.

so the basic rule is if it snows, it's not cold.if it snows it means there's clouds which means "warmer" temperatures. when it gets really cold, the sky is always clear.

Did you actually have to lock the door with the key? That is really rare in Finland. Abloy locks usually has a button in the lock mechanism. If you push it up the door stays locked and if the button is down then the door stays unlocked. Alternatively the door always locks and you just need the key always.

Good rule of thumb for sauna is to sit there and NOT throw any water until you are sweating. Try to relax and take it easy in the sauna. If the sauna is big enough it is also nice to lay down there

I've never, ever heard of this rule before. In fact, if you have a real woostove in the sauna, the first "löyly" is tossed on the stones before you ever prepare to actually get undressed and bathe. It's called "häkälöyly", or, free translation, the "carbon monoxide steam". It doesn't really remove the CO from the air, but clears the possible smoke a bit. Also, it isn't supposed to be dry heat, and a few ladles of water are intentionally put on the stove a few moments before you intend to go in. There are different schools of thought on whether you should wet your body and hair before going to the hot room or not, but it's generally a matter of preferences. In the summer, you might swim first and only then go to the heat. There might be some justification for not throwing the water on there before you're sweating, but really, it isn't a sauna if you don't do that. It's a generic hot room. The steam, löyly, literally is the spirit (the same word in Finnish for spirit and breath, "henki") of the sauna. Without it, it isn't what it's meant to be, both in the physical sense, and the original spiritual sense. This, from a born and raised Finn who has done some serious delving into the old traditions, spiritual concepts, beliefs, and mentality that go into the cultural traditions of old.

Youre having "kiuas" setting too hot. Thats not good to use it so red. Dial it down a little and make it like 80 celsius max. Electric is harder to make good.

Remember that you always wet and wash your whole body before going to the sauna. We always go to the sauna clean because it is a holy place. In the olden days, births were given in the sauna and the dead were also washed. Its great that you like Finland and Finnish culture! 👍😍

You should have a shower and also wet your hair/head before going to the sauna. It's both for keeping the sauna clean and your body to not overheat. And then you don't have to scream how hot it is, because it's much more comfortable when your body is wet 😅

95 degrees Celsius is way too high for a Sauna this small to be comfortable. At home I have 65 plus throw water and that's just perfect for me. The typical would be 80 degrees.
