Great review and analysis. Tatiana spent 4 years developing her growls before starting to use them in performances, and says she was mostly focused on not hurting her singing voice. Last year they did 152 shows and their North America tour was 42 headlining shows in 60 days. She didn't have access to coaches, but managed to teach herself - though obviously for a lot of singers the DIY approach has ended badly, and a friend of hers named Lena from the band Infected Rain out of Moldova next to Ukraine worked with Melissa Cross, as did the singer she emulated in learning to growl, Randy Blythe. Unfortunately, there is a lot of editing on this and I highly recommend a concert video. If you only do one more Jinjer video, do Sit Stay Roll Over live in Melbourne because it has the most different techniques in one song - fast switching both ways, including into growls mid-line, high, middle, and low growls (Pisces is just a bit lower than her kinda default growling tone - she goes lower), and belting. If you are going to do more Jinjer than just one, here are a few other songs that will show you other dimensions of her singing skills on stage. Perennial at Wacken for focus on her cleans with still great growls. Judgement & Punishment one-take vocal performance for belting and reggae, and great growls - there's a bit of an oops but still epic. Teacher Teacher live in Melbourne for a bit of rap,switching to growls in mid-line and a range of beautiful cleans. SSRO is still a good choice for low growls if you do more but either Pit Of Consciousness live in Kiev or the performance of Home Back using the link to the song in the description of the Alive In Melbourne full set video focus on her low growls and combining low growls with her other growling techniques even more.

@@JacobBurtonStudios For context, screamo is a specific subgenre of the "emo" genre of rock music. It's commonly misused to refer to the harsh vocal singing styles, and a good magic word to summon screeching metalheads who don't like the association :D

@@Sang-Drax I think it also has often been used by people who not only lack seemingly a basic understanding of the techniques but also are dismissive of it. As he got into the analysis, it's pretty clear Jacob isn't one of those.

I don't think we have to be too precious about the terminology with folks from the outside looking in. Screamo / Grunt / Growl / Gutturals / Fry / Cookie monster. We know basically what folk mean. They don't need to know the practically infinite minutiae and subgenre divisions, we should just be happy it gets checked out and taken seriously.

Everything about Jinjer is impressive. Obviously Tati gets the most attention, as she should. She's an absolute powerhouse of a front person. But the band is also amazing. Vlad is easily the most underrated drummer in professional music. They do such a great job of orchestrating their parts together. So incredibly tight for not only insanely complex time signatures, but syncopations on top of syncopations. Syncopations for days. Their video of their live set in Melbourne 2020 is absolutely bonkers, how good it sounds. I highly recommend it.

Having worked for for a decade in a pet boutique, when you spoke of dogs barking/growling, she reminded me of many chihuahuas who have a reputation of not realizing they are NOT Great Danes--BIG dog hiding inside such a little body!! Man, you could drive a Mack truck through the span/contrast of the singing and that scream from the depths of Hell. Not that I'M about to start attempting that tomorrow, but thanks for singers everywhere for that preventative advice. SUPER important!

Thing that got me hooked to Jinjer was exactly the Tatiana's low pitchless screaming capabilities (which most of the female deathmetallists doesn't manage properly) You're 100% correct on the way you described screams and especially the need for training for it. I myself have been deathmetal singer over an decade and my speciality is to run deep guttural voices and be capable to glide them seemlesly into high pitched scream, after a set my voice might be a bit down, so I have room of improvement on my vocal techniques still, but damn I remember when I started training. If I wen't even a bit too hard or forced too much, it felt like someone running scalpel down my throat from inside and next few days speaking felt like it went through cheese grater.

And this is a testament to the ability and endurance of Tati's amazing voice. Miracles really do come in small Ukranian packages! And the other members of the band are easily on par. Tatiana has said that after preforming on their longer sets that once she gets off stage it feels like she had done 100s of crunches. That's because she's singing from her diaphragm. And by the way this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Tatiana.

That is amazing! If we are really supporting our screams properly, that will definitely be the case! Her technique is impressive!!
@BERSERKR212

Why does everybody think that when she makes that 'scream' she uses her vocalcords? She uses the the part just above her larics. The sound is produced by the 'walls' of that peace of the throat. Takes a lot of time to master that.

And btw, thanks for showing me the mouth shape you used for going to a higher scream... I've learnt to do low growls that don't hurt or feel bad at all, but i've had issues with going higher. When you showed that example of higher scream @09:02 It kinda clicked... so I tried to follow and now i have basis for how to get high growls without hurting myself... thanks! :) That mouth shape is tied to all the muscles you need to get that to a healthy place.

dude its a false fold growl, the pitch is just from very slightly engaging her vocal folds to create that pitch but other than that the vocal folds are resting while she growls and thats also the reason why her clean and growl are the polar opposites of each other but yeah, the breath support and breath controll is that important and hers is brilliant so no worries there

If you want to explore Jinjer as a whole, the band is amazing, and Tatiana, aka Tati, more, there are plenty for you to check out. Teacher, Teacher for the speed of her switches. Who Is Going To Be The One - official live to hear how low she can go. Perennial - Live at Wacken for just an awesome performance. If/when you do Judgement (& Punishment) I highly suggest that you do the official video and then her one take vocal performance back to back. Throughout off the songs/videos I listed the band...amazing. Every one of the 4 of them are so talented that it's unbelievable.

@@JacobBurtonStudios I stand corrected! I did some more research and technically the vocal fry is also considered 'pitchless'. Apparently the correct term is a 'pitched vocal with fry or grit'! But anyways, I'm fairly certain that Tatiana uses the false chord technique.

Great analysis. It's nice hearing from people who are knowledgeable about this type of singing. Tatiana is very talented and skilled. I love this band, they are all very talented. As people have suggested, check out Perennial (live at Wacken). Judgement (&Punishment) one take vocal - great for seeing her sing up close and switching modes, Teacher, Teacher (I like the video production of the official video and sounds great), I Speak Astronomy (official Video), Who is Going to be the One (live) - very low growls on this one, Pit of Consciousness (official video), On the Top (live in Kiev), and Home Back (official video) - she goes very low on this and some great blending of jazz vibes on this. Honestly I just love all their music. They change it up a lot, but still maintain their own unique sound.
