Harbor Freight Vanguard engines are basically Honda clones and we have been running them on our pressure washer trailers. They run usually for 5 to 6 hours every shift and have been reliable for years.

Even with the work and money you are going to have to put into this it still looks to be a heck of a deal. I'd probably lean towards a short block if its under $2k like you said.

I agree, finding a bare block is probably the best option. Does any other cheaper equipment use that engine? Maybe you can find a scrapped riding lawnmower and strip a usable block off of it.

I haven't really been able to find anything else thus far that uses these but I'm still looking.

Bellzona epoxy on the hole, and a new rod. Maybe a crank if it’s fried.

I worked for a rental company that ran both these machines. The Barreto is a whole other level above the sg40. Wonderful machine that takes a beating and keeps going. The sg40, if you really want it to last BEFORE they break go thru and weld extra supports on the mounts for the pulleys where ever you can. Keep extra belts on hand. Grease the bearings A LOT. Like more than you'd think you need and more often. It looks like that one was probably rolled and robbed for parts. Which is probably why it was repoed. The sg40 rolls very easily on hills and is really jumpy at full throttle compared to the Barreto. I have a gx690 on a generator low hours I'd sell you for 2500.

Thanks for the info that's very interesting. I'm curious to see if the SG40 is productive enough to justify the extra maintenance and cost over the Barreto.

I feel that too well, spending too much time scouring marketplace and just being unable to pass up on good deals for new projects, I just wish I had the space to work like you, but nice video as always!

@@AlwaysBored123 Very much, but hey sometimes you end up getting such crazy deals, like I got a toro walk behind skid steer for only 300, although missing the engine it was still a fun project!

If it were me I would take the engine apart first so you know the scope of the damage, I’ve fixed holes in blocks by taking fine wire mesh and epoxy and putting it over the hole, if your lucky it mite just need a new rod. If the engine is no good then search marketplace I see those engines on there a lot. My city had a local auction about a month ago and they had piles of those engines that came off city equipment and mowers and the pallets of them went for like $10 I was so tempted to buy a pallet of them and now I wish I would have I could have sent you the parts you need☹️

Dang that would have been convenient lol. It's rare that I see one of these big Kohlers for sale near me. I'm planning to fix the block if it's practical. Just need to take it apart and see.

I don’t know what house power it is normally there 27ho but you could put one of those 22 hp harbor fright motors on it cheap

Unfortunately it's 38 horse power and 999cc so Harbor freight doesn't offer anything big enough to replace it really.

If you could find the welder that would be willing to patch the hole, rip it apart and ultra sonic clean the block to remove all oil residue and let the welder have at it.

I'm definitely pursuing that route. Stay tuned.

Yea always great video.. off topic, isn't the store in the beginning ABC a liquor store?

Yup. All the liquor stores in NC are state owned. Grocery stores can only sell beer and wine and such.

First thing u do with any engine before you buy parts is a compression test. These kohlers are known to eat rings

Find a used non Kohler horizontal V-twin and adapt it. It seems like Kohler quality has all but disappeared in the last 20 years. Kawasaki or Briggs industrial have much better reputation these days

What an awesome video. Who was the other man in the video at your shop? I am assuming he was your father or another family member. Please include him in your new videos. I enjoyed hearing the conversation between you two.
