Glyptal Application Process

In this video I detail the application process of a popular crankcase coating... that is... if crankcase coatings are actually popular.
In this video, 98 coffee filters gave up the ghost. 238 q-tips paid the ultimate sacrifice. Almost a dozen brushes were executed, and 3 aerosol caps dispatched to their graves. Also, during the battle, several Dremel tools were maimed, one severely.
Look, I'm doing everything I can to liven this topic up and make it interesting. Cleaning and painting are about the least interesting things someone else can watch. It's absolutely painful to edit, I know that much. It's not so bad for the guy doing the actual painting, but I'm doing my best to keep people's attention.
This is a full month's work in a half hour. I had to space the job out because of my filming environment and the toxicity of materials I was working with. Take my warnings and advice in the video seriously. They're the words of someone who's done the job. They help set expectations.
The most useful thing I can do is post links to other discussions that have already occurred, and to make room for places where people have posted their experience with failures of engine coatings. Despite my searching, I can not find any pictures or video. I found ONE plausible description of the kind of failure that can occur with improper application, but it was still a third-hand report. There are fans of this product posting in these threads. If you are considering this treatment, WEIGH THE PROS & CONS FOR YOUR BUILD, and YOUR HEALTH. Don't do this just because I did it.
So until anyone provides photo or video evidence, here are the links to threads where it was discussed. This google search is mean. It's too direct and to-the-point. It might hurt somebody's feelings? Yes, I've read them all.

This video was really sweet. I had never heard of Glyptal before. I didn't even know it was possible to coat your crankcase with anything like this. I didn't even know polishing the oil galleys in your head was something you could do. There was so much I leaned from these videos I can't even describe it all. Awesome stuff, I love the videos and I love your attitude. It's incredibly refreshing to have someone able to discuss his perspective without his wang getting in the way.

Glad I can help! The finish held up extremely well with zero signs or wear, flaking, etc. after many, many years of abuse. The engine combo was a simple 355 chevy, but withstood incredible high rpm nitrous abuse. As far as I know, it's still going strong and we built it back in 1996. That said, it was far easier to apply on the Chevy V8 due to the simple engine design. The Mitsu heads are full of tricky tight spots, which is why I admire what you've done here!

Well done Jafro! I can't get enough of the extreme detail that you pour into your videos. I used Glyptal on an old nitrous V8 that I built many years ago based on the advice of an old and trusted mechanic and have always wondered why I rarely hear about it being used in the import world. Excellent work as always.

I've done a few set of heads with Glyptol over the years but never a block because I didn't have the means to cure it but it is a great coating and dam near bullitt proof. Your right, prep is the key and the time involved is mind numbing. Great job on the head, I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. I'm glad you mentioned the neurotoxin problem, like most mechanics "it won't happen to me" well a coworker yrs ago repaired a diesel tank without cleaning it properly by arc welding patches on it and his career ended that day, eye sight, teeth, skin, touch, kidney, liver issues, it can and will happen. Cheap safety equipment and preparation are the key to avoiding a lifetime of illness.

You'd probably like the Glyptal Testing video, too. I test reactivity with like 30 automotive fluids. PS: I made fun of Buick Skylarks when I was a *kid* because I was always surrounded by Ford and Chevy bigots. Which doesn't make sense because Buick was GM... It's amazing how ignorant one can be when they're young, impressionable, and still don't have a driver's license. Then I grew up and realized that was a better muscle car bargain -back then- than all of the Fords and Chevys average guys like me and my family had. Then after I graduated high school I found myself tooling around in MD in a GS for a summer and the spacious interior spoiled me rotten. I'm 6'4" and I could put my feet up on the dashboard sitting in the front seat. The F-150 super crews today 'got nuthin' on 'em for interior space. The GSX package was perfectly timed and developed right at the end of the muscle car era before OPEC ruined everything, and I don't blame you for looking for them. Even the survivor cars that need extensive work start at $40,000 today if everything is there. Running/driving car? Try $60k. Still a bargain at 10-15x what they ever sold for new when you compare other models. I mean... Even the Skylark knock-offs and clones are selling that high. I read Hemmings, I go to RM and Barrett Jackson auctions. Today I love all kinds of cars I made fun of as a kid. 455 with a 4-speed? There's nothing not to like! Few luxuries in life allow you burn that much gas.

Gliptol is good stuff - I have been building electrical equipment for 4 decades - and have seen lots of engines and industrial equipment with this coating - if u have a machine that has to be serviced regularly and that service includes cleaning then your gonna want this. It's easy to clean after its installed. The red coating on most electric motor windings is gliptol - in the last 15 years the industry has moved to some epoxy products - I have seen oil flowing through generators from engines with rear main oil leaks and have no damage - just take it apart - bit it with a pressure washer - let it dry and then run it.

+John Klatt Glyptal won't shed heat. It would shed oil. Pistons are one of those things that I wouldn't want to do that to. In addition, some people delete their oil squirters, and I feel like this could result in oil starvation of the rings if the oil can't stick around long enough to flow through the rings' oil supply holes. Glyptal will act as an insulating layer, and I'm pretty sure that it would burn off quickly at the temperatures that pistons achieve, quickly ending up inside your crankcase.

Great show! Jafro, I'm catching up on some view time, relaxing after a Colonoscopy, today, which came out like your paint job. No Pol-ops! LOL Anyhow, I believe after watching this video, the gear box's of the old machinery are coated and baked with that product, something that is cheapened in new manufacturing of machinery in some cases. In the yards we baked armatures, for use on naval vessels. ;{)-----

deepsquat600 doood, I just got your comment a year later. The moment in the video just scrolled by. 22:02 lol. The can of de-natured alcohol was in the shot while I was talking about the GLYPTAL paint dissolving plastic. I wasn't talking about the denatured alcohol but totally understand how that connection was made. I burned brain cells trying to figure this out back when you originally mentioned it, but yes, I agree. Alcohol comes in plastic bottles sometimes. It totally won't make plastic squishy, but Glyptal will. I put my thumb through the spoon later in the video at 30:24 just to show what the paint does to plastic. It melted the bottom of the paint can cap. It does crazy things to plastic.

A well presented and narrated video, I know this was over a year ago so maybe you can give a point of view on the results. My theory: The insulating properties of glyptal would actually raise running temperatures because the head is not transferring the heat to the oil, much the same way a coolant passage wouldn't be able to transfer heat if it was coated. Very nice video, thanks for posting, Stan

About 40 yrs ago, I purchased some Official, Chevrolet sanctioned How-to High Perf manuals from my local Chevy dealership. In those manuals, the procedure for prepping the insides of the block and cylinder heads showed much of what you've done here. In addition, the painting of the castings interior to improve oil scavenging was also recommended, though I'm unable to recall if the recommendation was for Glyptal, or not. I do recall however, that the color of the paint used was a deep brick-red... I'd say you're on the right track! P.S. As I remember, this process was used so that an engine with extreme rpm capability could operate without installation of deep sump pans and still not suffer from oil starvation issues. It was also recommended for engines being fitted w/a dry sump system...

It might have been Rustoleum Red Oxide Primer. The shades aren't far off, but in photos, I can tell the difference at an extended glance. I'm pretty sure I could do it in person immediately. I've seen several small block chevys (mostly 327's) out there on the interwebz with the brighter-colored RROP. I think Chevy'd go with that one because it creeps closer to "Chevy Orange" range of the spectrum. Glyptal is a deeper red. I think these types of treatment are more common than people expect, it's just not documented much at all in video because it's mostly done by the "old timers" who are stereotyped at being less-savvy on the interwebz. I bet that's why this topic it's controversial. Video reaches more people that a photo album on a shelf. The reason I'm hoping this works... a dry sump setup is $5,500. While I'd love to document installing one, I'd need to win the lottery first.
@greatnortherntroll6841
@greatnortherntroll6841 7 жыл бұрын
It may have been the Rustoleum ROP. The meticulous attention to detail was the same as your process, and the manual was adamant about Not cutting corners! Unless you NEED a dry sump system due to space limitations (ie. highly modified chassis), I think you'll do quite well without it!

I thoroughly enjoyed your video and you did a great job! I have been doing parts finishing for many years and would like to offer some constructive feedback. I would argue that the two solvents you used in your video are the worst for parts refinishing. Both mineral spirits and denatured alcohol leave oily residues. I prefer 99% isopropyl alcohol or MEK. They are not a "hot" solvent like acetone but rinse and dry well. My other suggestion is to never use ferrous brushes on non ferrous metals. It embeds carbon. Brass or stainless steel would be a better option on aluminum, although a paint job is unlikely to fail is this type of application. I love your suggestion to use coffee filters. I was buying lense wipes and are too expensive. Thanks!

Dry sump means two pumps to drive unstead of one+belts,pulleys+ oil tank+modified oil pan. it's would rob more on the engine than would reduce oil turbulences i'm pretty sure. It would allow you to lower the engine ,so modyfing tranny and transmissions mmhhh a big job. Dry sump often used in rally or track here because of G force,not really for oil control or weak lube problems.

I am currently rebuilding a 74 cub cadet garden tractor rear differential. The interior of the cast iron case was painted I assume with glyptal, same redish color. I assume to keep condensation from rusting the interior of the axle as this is also the hydraulic fluid reservoir, after 46 years immersed in hydraulic fluid there is no change to the coating. I am thinking about doing to the underside of an small block chevy intake manifold to insulate the air/fuel charge from the hot oil below. Thanks for the write up.

"You can have it in the color you want as long as it's Brick Red" I love your sense of humor. Never heard of Glyptal before, that's why I subscribe to your channel. Don't have to own a DSM to benefit from your knowledge. I'd like to see some popular additives added to your jar list. Lucas, Marvel, etc.. In my opinion most DIY'ers are going to only use carb cleaner so that's gotta be in a jar too, just for when theoretical blown head gasket cleanup time comes. Awww but I love neurotoxins.

Yes! There will be. I had to make a new batch of test strips because my machine shop lost them. I forgave them immediately because not every machine shop lets you carry video equipment in to film their trade secrets (demonstrated in other videos). I will not let this topic get away. I'm still working on the block so we still have that opportunity. I will go out on a limb to predict that it's resistant to everything short of Xylene, Acetone and Methyl-Benzene.

Outstanding! Can't wait to see this build completed. Are there any plans to remove the valve cover after x miles, so we can see how the glyptal is holding up?

Coffee fillers are awesome for cleaning parts. Lint free, just enough scrubbing to clean machined parts but won't scratch soft parts. Great for storing parts especially oiled, best of all dirt cheap.

Very interesting stuff like always Jafro! I frequently like to use a product called Seafoam to clean out old build up carbon, as well as oil grease in the engine. I really wonder how Glyptal would hold up against the almighty Seafoam because its some strong stuff.. Thanks and keep em videos coming!

how well does this hold up in a high performance turbo engine? I plan on building a 2.3 turbo which is an iron block and head. which will most likely be run with water methanol also, would applying this to the outside help keep the motor clean?

I completely agree from the video that you wouldn't want to paint the coolant passages. But since I read about the flat color helping radiate heat faster, I have noticed many of the cars I've worked on have flat-black rads/condensers/trans coolers, etc. I can't really feel it with a finger or anything, but it's not a heavy coat of paint, nor does it look very smooth. It seems very counter intuitive to me. It could be anodized like you said, I'll look closer next time. While do you think that is?

Hi Thanks to you I've decided to try this paint on oil pan in my engine, to reduce carbon buildup and test the paint. Let's see how it works ;) And maybe if I ever need to take of engine heads or do a rebuild I will paint them too.
