The Churchills were from a Guards Armoured Regt, can't remember which one. However, while losing 11 vehicles tanks is bad, I'm pretty sure they were formed up for an 'O' group for orders. The vehicles weren't fully manned and ready for action/deployed tactically.

@walter2791
@walter2791 9 жыл бұрын
+Dino Daquin The Panther G was the best medium tank of WW2. T34 had big lack of accuracy and the frontal armor was a joke for the Panther. The Panther had more firepower, was more mobile, better armored, better equiped (infra red nightvision, better aiming system, anti magnetic paste,..) and very, very often better trained crews. In a 1vs1 battle, the T34 is a joke for the Panther G. Ofc. both tanks had weaknesess.

German large vehicles have mostly been accepted as too expensive, over complicated and maintenance heavy. They were basically overkill at the expense of too costly. Smaller ones like the Jgpanther and Jgpz 4/L70 were much more efficient and cost effective.

I agree Stug 3 was probably their most effective armored vehicle of the war but Allied bombing drastically cut back Jagdpanther production. Only 300 were built but without the bombing of the last year it would have been over 1000 and it's impact would have been greater.

@Killzillastudios The base of the gun, i believe, is called the mantlet, &, due to its shape, was known as the "saukopf" or "pig's head" mount, easier to produce than previous bolt-on mantlets as seen in stug IIIs of the earlier pattern. This particular design came out in Februray 1944, first on th sturmgeschutz III & IV, then on the Jagdpanther with it's awesome 88mm PAK43 anti-tank cannon.

@5hiThAppEnS2 This is sort of an answer to a problem. A rtating turret is great, but it adds complexity. By making it a fixed mount, it allows for better armor, simplifies construction, and costs less to build and maintain. This is a vehicle for hunting from an ambush, barrel just sticking out of the trees.

this was one of the best tanks of WWII. It could reach speeds of up to 34.2 miles per hour (55 km/h) which doesn't sound like much, but for the tanks of the time, It was truly a fast vehicle. It also had a very formidable 88 mm gun. Jagdpanther means "hunter panther" in German. And lets just say it didn't earn the name by luck.

@Dreachon Just a quick question, maybe I missed something, how did British Churchill tanks end up on the Eastern Front? The Jagdpanther was first used on the Eastern Front and the bulk of this panzerjager were stationed in the east (with the exception of the 654th in Normandy and the diversion of jagdapnthers from the East for the Ardennes Offensive (ie - 10th SS, 655th, 519th, 560th and the 559th)). I guess I must be misinformed.

The first deployment of the SU-100 was in early 1945 against German forces struggling to retain control of Lake Balaton in Hungary.

@Killzillastudios Sorry ran out of words. The moving of the cleaning rod stowage from the left side to the rear, engine deck, wasn't until October, 1944. Field modification - perhaps.

Scratch yes, penetrate in most cases no. But the bazooka was able to penetrate side and back armor of the Panther. And with a larger diameter shaped charge the bazooka would have penetrated the front armour as well. The bazooka caliber was only 57 mm but that could have been changed easily.

@Dreachon German optics were of high quality, when this was coupled to a weapon like the 8.8cm L71 led to 85% chance of hitting the target at 1000m. The sheer power of this gun also allowed to take down a sherman at a distance of well over 2000m. The jagdpanther still had 13 degree traverse to both left and right with it's main gun, allowing it to make changes without the need to move as long as the target remained in this field, even easier when it was firing at long range.

Despite having about 20 more millimeters of armour on the front, the front of the SU was very flat while the jagdpanther was sharply angled. This meant the SU would take a more head-on hit while the jagdpanther would encourage deflection of the round. There is also the issue with the SU's gun setup. The Jagdpanther gun is set back into the upper body and surrounded with the good sloped armour while the SU's gun sticks out of the tank creating a large weak point in its otherwise strong front.

the Jagdpanther had a very advanced turning gearbox similar to the one of the Tiger 1 but less complex, had a perfect hability to move on all terrain thanks to the overlapped wheels and torsion bars, and the maybach engine could reach 46km/h on the road, even more than a Stug III. The Sherman with that crappy tracks was the real shit in mobility on mud...

Jagdpanther was not built for tank battle, it had no moving turret. It was used against fortifications.

@12ut5 That is hard to say in the case of the jagdpanther it only arrived in mid 1944 with the invasion of normandie, they did however cause considerable losses to the allies. The Tiger I was already in service around september 1942. That said the first engament of jagdpanther was nasty, in the space of just 2 min the 4 jagdpanthers of Luders destroyed 10 churchill tank without losing one.

@Dreachon There is one other assault gun that can be looked at how good these vehicles were and that the sturmgeschutz or StuG for short. These vehicles would claim around 30.000 enemy AFV destroyed when only around 11.000 StuG were build.
