Always get an accurate diagnosis. Along with a solid confirmation of repair. Verify what you have done actually fixes the issue

People need to learn that manufacturing and labor jobs don't really mean a whole lot whether it's Jaguar or Hyundai. It used to mean more, but in 2024 almost everything is manufactured within fairly similar quality standards. I build industrial machines and I won't say the brand name but I am thoroughly disappointed in the quality that the customer won't know about until the machine breaks. Nobody cares at all about longevity. They only care about their engineered warranty periods.
@evanranshaw4659
@evanranshaw4659 5 ай бұрын
I suppose they could be considered "mistakes," but only with the benefit of hindsight to know that it didn't solve the problem. Oftentimes, you might go hunting for the cause of the observed symptoms, and you'll find several things that are worn, damaged, out of spec, etc. There is skill involved at that point to decide which of the observed problems is most likely to be the cause of the symptoms, but, unfortunately, you can only navel-gaze for so long before you eventually have to try one of your theories and find out if you were correct. Along the same lines, sometimes one problem can mask the symptoms of another, or there are multiple worn/damaged/bad parts, but you can't see the less obvious one until you've fixed the more obvious one. I'm not trying to run to the defense of the Jag dealer; I'm just pointing out that these things aren't always black and white. Of course, it's also possible that the customer did damage between when it left the dealer 4K miles ago and now. It's even possible that they have a pattern of behavior that is repeatedly causing this damage. People get weird when they accidentally damage their stuff and are embarrassed about it. I always tell my customers that I don't care if they did the damage themselves and that there's no point in being ashamed of it now. Would you go to your doctor with a health problem and then lie about what you did or what happened? I seems fairly obvious that it's a bad idea (I guess people do it too though). If they just own up to it and tell me exactly what happened, then that can help inform my diagnosis and save significant labor. I'm going to find out anyway; they can maintain the act and pay more, or just tell me, and we might get it done quicker/better.

Dave, that paint meter tool you showed is something everyone buying a "certified" used vehicle needs to be aware of. It's a great way to catch a car dealership lying about body panels being replaced. I personally didn't need a paint meter to know that Toyota tried to rip me off with a car that way. Because Toyota's technicians forgot to reinstall the weather gasket on the fender near the windshield.

When I was still turning wrenches, I had a Cadillac come in for a complaint of a popping when turning. Took it for a test drive and it was popping on the driver side, sounded like the coil spring. A few days later all of the parts to build the struts came in. Got it all put together and took it for a test drive. The popping was still there. I double checked my work, which was good. After awhile I realized that the wheel bearing had been replaced. I looked behind it and noticed that a bolt was missing. I replaced the wheel bearing figuring it was toast from the missing bolt, better safe than sorry, put all three bolts in and the popping went away. Wheel bearing was under warranty since our senior tech did the bearing. The customer got new struts free of charge. The plumber story is a great analogy. I wish I worked in a shop like yours. Awesome crew you have sir.

Hi Dave. Im retired now, and sold my business and real estate. 47 years, auto service and machine shop. I invested in an injector test bench for my shop in 1999. It added a whole new dimension to my business, and I highly recommend you consider it. Eliminated all doubt when diagnosing fuel delivery issues, and turned out to be a very profitable addition to my capabilities. I was the only shop within 85 miles that offered the service, and after a couple of years, I was testing and servicing a dozen sets a week from other shops. You will be amazed how many faulty injectors will be identified once you begin testing them. Just a thought. Oh yeah, almost forgot. I had 2 of the AXE spray cabs. One set up for iron, and one with soap for aluminum. Love that company. You gotta try their engine stand!

Don’t we just love swaptronics Dave? We will just keep hanging parts on it until we stumble across what actually fixes it. This is the level of compitency of most so called technicians today. Unless these shops are forced to eat there mistakes it won’t stop. Grudgingly pay the bill. Take the vehicle and sue them all in small claims court. Auto repair now as always is rife with incompetence.

Dave, what a superb video from a Master Techs perspective. Kudos for patiently explaining to the owner the diagnostic findings you and your tech discovered. It appears speculation may have trumped accuracy during previous evaluations you did not conduct, that recently occurred. Having knowledge of the Jag run-out specs would have been a useful tool to illustrate to those competent mechanics who enjoy your unique form of honest analysis. One can trust your diagnosis with your approval of a .005 runout measured by a precision micrometer. If the original Jag spec for the runout was made known to the viewers, we could have been informed how close the measured run-out value compared to Jag service manual publication for this spec that identifies with the make and model. Kudos for your tact and diplomacy, you allow us to watch a true professional who knows how to exclusively relate to the prized customer, while reinforcing your convictions and diagnostic results. Thanks for the opportunity, Dave.

I always send my wife to a new shop first when repairs are needed, she`s smart mechanically too. If she comes home and says they treated her with respect and answered her questions properly we use that place again. She is also Blonde and gets some weird ass attitudes at times. That to me is the perfect test of how good a shop is, how they treat their customers, especially the ones who are possibly vulnerable to Mechanic BS. 10 out of 10 Dave,,,

All about the inspection work ,once they agree that there is something,but they should start at the wheels,out of round tyre,flat spotted,and as you found a bent rim(pot hole damage )then do the dial guage checks on the drive shaft ,the axels , looking for obvious wear of universals etc . Sort the Rim first and advise that drive line measurements are good . Another point is that the old parts need to be retained for the customers inspection and for further reference if there is a dispute .

This was an interesting episode..So Dave spotted an existing problem of the left rear wheel, and possibly the bent drive axle going to that wheel... This car, with those very low aspect ratio (profile) tires and extremely offset hub large diameter aluminum wheels, that seem to be factory equipped, is probably not a good one to use on highways with known rough surfaces... Dave, and his crew did a good job recognising the actual problems, that were present on this vehicle at the time they received it... I found it very interesting how Dave used a paint thickness meter to see if the car was in an acciDENT.... It is possible that the damage to the rather fragile wheel / tire / Left Hand drive axle, took place AFTER the last visit to the dealer... The client might want to trade that vehicle in for something that is better suited for rough roads, that are known to be in that area... Another interesting thing, was the mention of what the law requires repair facilities to conduct their business properly... The description of the CAUSE of the problem(s), the estimated COST to repair the problem, and the estimated amount TIME it will take to return the repaired vehicle to the client, BEFORE the vehicle is to be worked on ...

I replaced the driveshaft in my Holden VY SS Commodore with a new aftermarket unit that a company made up at Sydney in Australia 5 years ago because the original Holden tailshaft had a non replaceable universal joint which was worn out & had play in it. I had a vibration on acceleration at 40 km/h (25 mph) in second gear after I replaced the front guibo with an aftermarket part in early 2022 & it had a massive vibration so I replaced the centre bearing which insulator had separated from the carrier & it was actually for a V6 model (3.8 litre) , not mine which is a 5.7 litre V8 model which is offset to one side 5 millimetres more than the V6 centre bearing assembly. The vibration was still there at 40 km/h for a while including when I drove through a roundabout so late last year I jacked the rear of the car up,put it in neutral then I checked for runout with a dial gauge which was at 0.4 millimetres or 0.016" It should've been no more than 0.005" or 0.127mm,I happen to have a slightly used guibo which has some small splits in it but I put it in which got rid of that 40 km/h vibration in second gear. I even had wheels which were worse than that rerolled through my tyre shop by a legally certified person & they even welded up a cracked rim,I repainted them. My axle shafts may be a bit bent as well but it wasn't the wheels & them which caused that vibration,I still need to replace that guibo because it does vibrate a little bit sometimes because it's split,the other one that I bought was warped & I was hoping that the new tailshaft wasn't bent. I think that the wheels got bent when Kevin Rudds people who were a Kidd whose a Walmsley tried to get me into a job at a timber mill in 2011 where the road was very rocky & not only that the local council was doing road works there & they didn't put road signs up to tell me to slow down & stop so I drove into a 1 foot deep cutout in the road then I had a tyre blowout. I rebuilt the suspension in 2012 because the struts & shock absorbers had blown out & the strut mounts & bearings were smashed,so they are the sort of people who think that I can't get jobs. Note the local roads aren't very good in My area & need redoing as well !

I want to see you do this same show; but tractors and farm-trucks and in-field conditions and fixes. It’d be wonderful. Between the chaos, your repair intelligence, and the muddy yokel row-croppers, it’d be a recipe for at least 36mos of good TV 😎

Vibrations are one of the hardest things to diagnose. All you can do is replace or repair the obvious but there is a good chance it wasn't causing the problem.

Missing a bent wheel is something that shouldn't happen, but always have to fix the obvious before you can fix the real issue!

I did! Your plumbing story actually helped me out, I had a leaking faucet in my tub and your story got me to get in gear, I called a plumber and he came by today to repair the tub faucet. Luckily, there were no further issues, but it was good to always get ahead of maintenance. Got my car booked in for an oil change along with my tire changeover. The mix of professional car advice mixed with life advice is a really helpful way to learn about cars.

Hitting a pothole is pretty easy to understand - change the wheel. How an axle gets bent is another To hear this customer recount her story is the best part of this story. Sherlock Holmes may not figure this out. Why two rims? Are both bad? I wouldn't want my wheels fixed under a warranty situation.

Seems everyone of these videos has a cliffhanger aspect where we're left wondering how the story played out with the vehicle, customer, part, or whatever. Great content without a satisfying endiing.

If there's one thing I've learned to live by over the years whether it be working on a car or troubleshooting and fixing computer software in my daily job, it's the KISS method. Keep It Simple Stupid. Start with the small, simple, basic things first. It's usually the simple things like a bent wheel in this instance. It will save you time, the customer money, and make you more in the long run as it will earn the customer's trust that you're not out to rip them off in which they'll keep coming back when they need service again.

Dave Love all of your videos but you could have isolated the leaking sink by closing the shut off valves and found the main leak first then on the side replaced the faucet. LOL Love your vids and look for more everyday. Keep up the great work and thanks for being so Honest. GRAY HAIR OLD MAN POWER!

Dave, always love your approach......give me data and what are the facts? Root cause analysis is the basis for corrective action!! Thanks for the episode, hope you'll share the feedback from the customer and how the dealer responded.

Dave’s Auto Center comes thru again. My shop repairs 5-10 bent wheels daily for dealers and tire stores in our area. We have trained our commercial customers to look at the wheels for problems FIRST before blaming anything else for vibration and noise. High percentage of the time it’s the RF wheel that’s bent…

As someone who's not a plumber I would have reached down and turned off the valves under the dripping faucet then looked at the meter. I like your use of analogy and the comfy way you talk with (not to) customers and that you don't do brain surgery with an air hammer.😂

Swap the right rear wheel for the left rear wheel, and recheck runout. If runout moves to the other side of the car, replace the wheel and job done. If it stays put, then something's wrong with that new axle shaft too.

My crappy old Hyundai's axles would vary day to day if you checked um. I found out one day that when your control arms snap the axle doesn't do much good.
