I wanted a bird all my life, tried it, ended up having to rehome Louie because I wasn't ready. Turns out what I needed was a nice male milk snake. Just keep a room warm, feed em twice a month, his vet bills aren't so bad, and for the love of all that is holy do not give them an opportunity to escape. If I had a nickel for every reptile my wife found hiding in the bottom of my underwear drawer, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that that's where they go

I learned that if they are infertile, as long as they arent cracked,they just petrify. So I have one of those old lady glass jars used for like candy, but instead I put my conure eggs in them. I keep the jar right next to my jars of feathers i collect from them.

@@NepetasShippingWall1642 as long as the shell is fully in tact, conure eggs specifically are so small that they just petrify. Not a single one that I’ve kept has smelled. If the shell is even slightly cracked when first laid, then it can grow mold or have other issues. But the person I learned it from had literally over 100 lovebird and conure eggs in a basket. And I have about 30 conure eggs now in a jar with zero issues

To be honest, if this EVER happens again, you can always see if theres any snake owners nearby who'd like them for their egg eating snakes. Most egg-eaters can't eat chicken eggs because theyre too big, and small eggs are hard to come by for the younger baby snakes!!

Okay, I am definitely not an expert on birds, but I think you can be proud of yourself. The fact that your girl was able to lay way more eggs than what is normal for their species without any issue, shows to me that she was given a very calm and safe environment where she felt relaxed enough to produce this many eggs relatively easily. As someone who tended to a gloster canary, I couldn't agree more with how birds make cute but tedious pets. Birds are lovely creatures, they really add to the atmosphere in the house and I miss my birb, r.i.p. But heaven knows how disturbed my parents were of the *smell*. They make good companions but the high monk that teached me to be patient human... was a bird.

yeah, my parrot(s.) who are both female, laid 8 eggs each, so i had to take "care" of 16 eggs, i put it in quotes because i did NOT wanna take care of 16 parrots. So i did the 2 "insane methods" of boiling them and smashing them, away from prime and bee (Prime is the name of my first parrot and bee is the name of my second, i got the names from optimus prime and bumblebee from transformers because they are my fav characters) as to not traumatize them, and i made sure that they had 0 place(s.) to nest AT ALL.

my family lost our bird to her not being able to handle laying eggs, we didn't find out until it was too late but she became a lot more affectionate before she died and it only made her dying even more painful since she started cuddling up to me when id be downstairs and it became really nice to have a little companion during my day. she was also friends with our bunny, she hang out in his cage with him sometimes. im glad tofu was okay, i wouldnt wish that kind of thing on anyone

@kitsuneWC nope! After a while, the females hormones will go back to normal and she will just lose interest in the eggs altogether, which is a good time to take the fake eggs away. I had a female dove who I let sit on her eggs because they weren't fertile and after a while she just went right back to her normal self

The way to check if the egg is fertalised: 1.Let your bird lay then for some time untill the fetus forms, which depends on species of the bird(about a week) 2.Swap with fake eggs. 3.Check the non fake eggs under a strong flashlight(if the shell is chicken-egg thin a phone flashlight will do) 4.If it glows yellow it's not fertilised, if it glows red it's alive. Sorry not sorry for any spelling mistakes.

As a bird nerd tm, thank you so much for not trying to raise those eggs! The amount of birds with serious health issues or premature deaths I've seen simply because they were raised by underqualified individuals is crazy. Choosing to not allow those eggs to hatch is extremely responsible.| For future reference and those who may be going through similar, please do choose to either smash or boil the eggs. Frozen eggs can actually still develop, rarely but possibly, when unfrozen!

I mean there's nothing more than a couple of bird cells loosely clumped together in there, it takes a few days before the blood vessel network in the egg even grows (the blood vessels aren't part of the bird, it just moves nutrients from the egg white to the fetus during growth). Eggs that you buy from the store might well be as developed as those eggs were, assuming she got to them within a couple of days. For chicken eggs, it's about 48 hours of an egg being sat on before you don't reall wanna crack it open to eat, that's the time it takes before the blood vessels even start developing.

Hey Jaiden! I’m a birb mom like you! I have 4 birds and have hatched/raised various clutches. I have some advice ! Since it’s tofu’s first clutch more than likely they’re duds! I also recommend you have your own fake eggs for the next time it happens. ( mine usually lay eggs twice a year) Each time they lay them quickly switch them out that way they don’t grow. If you have any suspicions of a baby bird in the egg you can candle the eggs. That way you can see if they’re a dud or they have life. For tofu when she starts laying get her cuttle bones and mineral blocks. This will keep her calcium up. Hope this helps!

I used to have birds and I miss them honestly cause of their personality, they were both cockatiels and one just love to nip and climb on us, which- your not supposed to do cause then they will think they are in charge👹👹 but the other was always just the one that just chilled and would only get upset when it was dark (we put a blanket on their cage at night so they would sleep but in the morning she would scream cause she wanted to play) but sadly my mom got rid of them thinking me and my sister didn't even take them out of their cage (we literally had them out most of the day 😭😭😭 and would make sure they were ok and fed give them snacks and interact with them)

Having just one bird preferably a budgie/parakeet isn’t bad they don’t have very messy poop compared to a parrot and if you get them as a baby they tend to be more friendly and easier to bond with, they also have cuter noises than a parrot but you don’t get to pet them like a parrot but it does depends on the bird, also if they bite you it won’t hurt as bad as a parrot they are needy but not as needy as a parrot if they are annoying you can just throw a blanket over their cage and if that quiet them down place them in a bedroom while watching t.v

As someone who raised baby birds because my birds had babies like... Oh my 6 years ago, great and all but it is difficult. i got some of my absolutely best memories with them but after my bird Jeuwl had passed (she lived for almost 5 years, she's a parakeet and their lifespans are 4-8) i was done, nope, no more, i still have a few from before but none that i hatched (3) I can't have that same bond as before, birds are the absolute worst because they hate everyone (but i still love them) and I'm soon going to give them to a new home where they can get the love they deserve and someone else can have that love that i used to have. Nature is beautiful 🎉 We did the same. I grew up on a farm and if we had too many eggs or they were gross (the hens would track in mud if it was rainy) we'd give them to the pigs or the dogs-especially if one of the dogs was sick. Sometimes we'd even give them back to the ladies, but the eggs have to be taken out of egg form first so the gals don't start eating their own eggs.

Bird Dad here! Ive raised baby birds since ive been 8 years old and i can confirm what you did was for the Best! Baby birds are SO time consuming and theyre so fragile. If youre REALLY curious to see if the eggs had babies in them put a flashlight against the egg! If you see veins and a nucleus it has a baby inside!

Or a chicken! Or finches! As someone who owned budgies, lovebirds, conure, quaker, they really aren't easy pets lol. That actually made me wonder if those really are the first egg Tofu has laid. From what I heard, it is relatively common that chickens will eat the unfertilized eggs they lay to get back the calcium they lost by laying it, so it could be possible that Tofu has laid eggs in the drawer, but ate them because they were never fertilized

@@billionai4871 This is vastly more common in chickens and somewhat rare in parrots (or at least "domestic" ones). I can't say why that is, but basically everyone I know who has ever owned chickens has had that experience, meanwhile I have never heard a first-hand account of that regarding parrots despite being in dozens of parrot groups online. Typically, parrots (again, at least domestic) will sit on the eggs for X time and then just fully abandon them, leaving them to rot. I knew someone whose bird laid eggs under their bed and they only realised when they started to smell a bad odour. Maybe it's an instinct that has been lost, but I still haven't heard of it ever happening.

Fun fact I had a bird growing up and overnight one day she laid an egg. We were seriously uneducated so we went “hey, let’s crack the egg open to see how healthy it looks” SO WE CRACKED THE EGG OPEN IN FRONT OF HER WITHOUT REPLACING IT. She laid another one the next day and we just, let her keep it. It wasn’t fertilized so it wouldn’t hatch but we didn’t know what to do. Anyway it rolled off the cage and cracked and she stopped laying eggs thankfully
