Pedestrian golden rules in Jakarta: - assume all drivers are idiots esp. motorcyclists - double and triple check that traffic has stopped before you cross a street, there's always that one idiot who wants to drive as fast as possible - be careful walking on pavements, either some parts are broken/holes or motorcyclists use them as shortcuts

@kennethkho71652 ай бұрын
If you are still thinking in terms of traffic, then you don't speak the same language as Europe or Japan. They care about the people walking the streets, people cycling, people transitting, small businesses, making the city smaller and denser, and they could not care less about how the cars are doing, because cars don't belong inside cities (they need to be limited to 20-30 kmh)
@kennethkho71652 ай бұрын
"BSD City" is the ultimate doublethink concept, it claims to be liveable in its promotional materials but it is every exact opposite (yes there is a scientific meaning of "liveable" in urban planning circles which means dense planning), and it is not even a city, i don't get why private actors are allowed final say in urban planning matters here

The media can also play a role by raising awareness of traffic safety issues and promoting safe driving practices like this video...

All those short clips with buses crashing on toll roads and trucks running into shops apparently don't do a very good job at actually teaching people why that happened in the first place. Really enjoyed the video! All I can say is: what can you expect when most of us driving didn't actually pass the driving test properly. A deadly combination of this and poorly enforced traffic laws make Jakarta mostly unwalkable. Our pedestrian infrastructure is still lacking too especially in certain parts of the city but I do feel like the overall philosophy of the city is turning into car/motorcycle-free traffic and focusing more on public transportation albeit the process is very very slow and long. Hopefully our next Governor will also make this a priority in their program. Terima kasih videonya, Mas :)
@johanstravel3 ай бұрын
Yeah, it starts early with proper education (driving lessons), then comes enforcement (which is lacking, but electronic fines are helping a bit). The infrastructure that's available is mostly abused on top of that. That's how you perpetuate a culture of not walking.

@00-_-_-_-003 ай бұрын
Well, Jakarta isn't build for pedestrians because Indonesians in general don't walk very much. So it's natural for them to put themselves in the position of motorists and what is convenient for them (like using the sidewalk as an extra lane when the traffic becomes inconvenient as opposed to thinking about how this recklessness would effect pedestrians). As someone who never owned a motor vehicle before, Indonesia in general is a hell hole for me. The pavements are worse here in my hometown of Bandung so motorists are less of a problem here compared to street vendors

I don't think that's the case. The traffic law from 2009 only mentions that red means stop, no exceptions. At least, as far as I can find. This would also be the most logical way to handle red lights in Indonesia as it's hard enough to get people stopping. Giving them a possibility to not stop legally will open up a whole load of arguments why they never have to stop.
