Wow, I didn't notice that. I don't always have cash on me (also I don't have a lot of cash in my bank account ll), but I try to make a point of at least smiling at, looking at, and talking to the homeless people I run into in my life. I've never been in that situation myself, but I have to imagine it's heartbreakingly dehumanizing to be so totally ignored all the time. You're almost a ghost! People will try SO HARD to pretend homeless people don't exist, either because they genuinely don't want to make them feel bad, or because acknowledging their existence makes them feel sad (and perhaps a little guilty)...but in another way it probably makes the homeless person feel even worse!

I hate most of the homelessness content. But like years ago I did see one video on KZbin where this guy went round and asked homeless people one wish, then he did his best to fulfil some of those wishes. There was actually a lot of people who initially wished to peace on Earth and similar ideas but my mind still thinks of the guy who asked for frosted flakes. If I remember correctly they wrapped it up nice for him and they got him a little bowl he could eat them with. The joy on this man’s face from a cereal he had been craving for ages lives rent free in my mind.

this pisses me off beyond measure. i feel like so many people think of the unhoused as a charity project. they’re humans who can have control over their own lives. just give them some money and go on your way. if you want you can give them basic stuff like a blanket and water. but they may not like the food you give them and that’s okay. like i said: humans who can have control over their own lives. i know it sucks when your ego boost is interrupted by a person having autonomy, but they don’t have to be grateful for everything they don’t even want/need. edit: one of my main points with giving them choice, is that they have the choice to buy drugs. if they decide drugs are more important than anything else, even food, then the drugs probably were. withdrawal is painful and medical care isn’t going to be an option to take away that pain. doing more may be the ONLY option. being houseless is also hard. if they’d like to live in bliss by taking drugs, rather than facing reality, they can. they don’t have the resources to healthily cope with the trauma being unhoused would cause. is them possibly doing drugs enough to take away their autonomy? what if they use the money for a bus ticket to visit a loved one, food they enjoy, sanitary and hygiene products? if you don’t have the means to help somebody get clean, the next best thing is harm reduction. that means the money for the proper supplies to get high safely, and yes, money to buy the drugs.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't give someone money if you want to but to make a demand of someone who is going out of their way to be kind is the definition of entitlement.. "Don't give me your shitty food, I have preferences ya know " well cool, get your own shit then. If you're homeless by choice and aren't expecting or wanting help. No problem, live as you wish as long as you don't hurt anyone. Also, maybe you can't buy anything with $5 but if you get $5 from 4 people, you have $20 which will buy you a few doses of just about any drug you want. It's not selfish or wrong of someone to not want their hard earned (or even if it wasn't hard earned) money going to support drug dealers and help them further destroy the community you are trying to help. What if the dose you buy for them, kills them? Now more than ever it's a possibility. Fentanyl is no joke and it's not properly dosed out all the time. One pill is not the same as another pill even if they cost the same amount of money. It's not harm reduction to just pay for addicts to use whenever and however they choose. That's enabling. More addicts die from not taking care of themselves than from withdrawal and even more than that they die from overdose. So no, the drug isn't more important. That's called addiction. It's your brain tricking itself into believing that the drugs are equally important to food, water, hygiene etc. That's actually the reason addiction ruins lives. Encouraging that way of thinking is telling someone that their tendency to self harm is coming from a place of truth and knowledge of self. That's lazy thinking and probably dangerous.

He’s been homeless due to drug addiction and disabled due to a head injury from skating for most of my life. I’ve always hated this kind of content for exploiting people in these situations. Why can’t they just help without a camera because they’re good people? But something changed when I saw the video of my brother getting pampered with money, brand new Vans gear (shoes, hoodie, etc) and a really nice collar for his doggy. But selfishly it only changed for him. The look on his face was incredible and he teared up, something I’ve never personally seen. Camera or not, it meant a lot to him to hear that the community had supported him. I don’t truly know the man filming’s intentions, it sounds like they’ve built somewhat of a friendship off camera and the man has helped him before. He even found old footage of my brother skating from when I was a baby, footage I’ve never seen before. It brought tears to my eyes because I’d never seen that side of him, he was so lively and talented. I’m torn. I’m glad my brother got help, confused why it was filmed, but also happy it was filmed because now I know where my brother has been camping out so my sister and I can go find him, and this sounds sad but, I now know that he’s actually alive and out there. It’s a very bittersweet situation, it’s not just black and white. Sorry for writing an essay lol this situation really impacted my family and I

This makes me so sad. I was homeless in the middle of winter in Wisconsin. I struggled. I was addicted to drugs. Started using them due to chronic migraines and chronic tinnitus on top of my CPTSD and other mental ailments, but...for the most part, I was really, really grateful for anything I was given. But if somebody pulled up to me being kind and I ended up finding out tbey filmed me and posted it on KZbin, I would be so ashamed. So embarrassed, so hurt 💔

Being disabled and chronically ill, it's really important to me to have a youtuber who talks about the blatant ableism in online content, and how exploitative that content is. No other youtuber is focusing on it quite like you (which makes sense, since you know what it's like to fill those shoes) but don't think it isn't incredibly appreciated. Thank you Jake.

I haven't been homeless, but I lived out of a van as a child, and had utilities and things turned off a lot, and an underrated resource is water! it seems obvious, but people forgot people might not have easy access to free, clean water. and of course, blankets, toiletries, gift cards (to somewhere like McDonald's, open 24-7 and has a public bathroom and inexpensive food, or grocery stores).

i work in an area with a lot of unhoused people and it’s frustrating that i have coworkers sometimes be like “nah man we gotta kick them out” like why. i dont care if someone sits in the lobby on a cold day with a cup of water like why would i care about that
@wooogie6722 жыл бұрын
it’s because a lot of people don’t view unhoused people as worthy of respect. most of us are taught the misconception that all homeless people are addicts, and that “those” type of people are bad people and thus don’t deserve kindness and respect from others. many people just stick to this belief because it’s easier to ignore them than help. i’ve fallen into this apathy too but from now on i’m going to try and help more even if my social anxiety makes things difficult

I was browsing the NeverStop merch website & I must say, I absolutely love the happy pills sweatshirt & plan to buy it next month or sooner if I am able. However, I actually made this comment to say that Hannah is the most beautiful model! I saw her on the NeverStop front page (and yourself as well of course). You two look like such a perfect match. Thank you for starting NeverStop, and I plan to support it asap! Ohh lemme climb up here on this soapbox, please...I 100% agree with you, Jake, when you said to *_Just give unhoused people CASH!_* That is what they need, anyway, not gift baskets. I don't want to hear a darn word from anyone either about "well what if they spend it on _____"! So what if they do? You GAVE them the cash, so at that point it is no longer your decision. They will spend it on what they need most at that moment. Addictions, even if someone is looking to get out of one, most of the time cannot be stopped cold turkey without serious risks; so dont "pre-judge" people. Either give them money, or dont; but quit putting "conditions" on what you give to people. Dont give with strings, nor a side of guilt; unhoused people already have enough of both. Have a great evening all! (PS: When I said "you" in my lil rant, I was referring to just anyone in general, but no one specifically.)

and re: the starbucks gift card, starbucks has taken outlets out of their locations to deter homeless people from staying there. while we are “trained” to only call the cops when there’s an emergency of someone getting hurt or stolen, i’ve *still* had supervisors say that we should call the cops on homeless people who stay in our cafe or outside on the patio furniture who aren’t even bothering anyone. starbucks is great for the free wifi, but it’s not a safe space for homeless people because of the disgusting elitism that people have.

Reminds me of a former job. A Scottish brewery was expanding into our city, they chose a fairly cheap property for their first college area pub. Said property was next to an empty lot where I'd watched homeless people just chill for YEARS. Yeah we were supposed to call the cops on the homeless people. We were supposed to ignore and even harass them. I couldn't. Because having been homeless in this city, I legitimately talk to those people every time I pass them. Idk what my point is. It's just really bothersome, I'm still bothered that I couldn't do anything to fix that situation. I tried really hard to explain to higher ups that being kind to our local homeless population and contributing to shelters would be more beneficial than criminalizing people. I realized I was fighting an impossible battle when they treated some random black man asking about our hours like he was a dangerous homeless thug. My guy was trimmed and clean, he was just genuinely curious about our hours. And they acted like he was gonna shoot us up, and like me answering his questions (what are your hours, am I allowed to bring my dog, etc) was tantamount to me revealing our location to the enemy Sorry oh man that's long. I'm just still angry, this was five years ago and I'll never not be angry.

As a former homeless person, I can say that cash is the best thing you can give. And give it directly to them, because all the foundations and charities have to pay SO MANY PEOPLE and so much of that money does NOT go to the homeless. Giving cash can save people's lives. Yes, some may spend it on alcohol or drugs, but the alternative could be stealing to get what they need, or having a lower quality of life. If you can, and you want to, giving gift cards, cash, and new socks, can make life a little bit more bearable for someone going through a rough patch❤

I don’t get why people are like “oh I don’t give homeless people money cause they’ll buy drugs or do this or that blah blah blah” like bro, either buy them food or blankets or just give them cash or gift cards to get food. At the point once you give them whatever you give them, who tf cares what they do with it ? It’s their stuff/money at that point. I promise you that giving them a couple bucks can make their day, as someone who literally was homeless on and off for 3 years, $5 bucks can literally make or break someone’s day sometimes !

I worked with homeless people and it's best not to give them cash in case they use it on a fix or alcohol, we do this as a precaution to keep them clean and able to care for themselves, like you suggested, we give them water crates and food that they can eat without cooking and if they have access to cooking facilities, we give them pots, pans and things like pasta. We also gave them a place to shower, get new clothes, sleep and even find them a residency and job if we can to help them out.

If someone is in active addiction, they are definitely trying to avoid going through withdrawal symptoms bc that's hell on earth even in a comfy bed I can't imagine what it must be like on the street. The toiletries and food are wonderful, but harm reduction is also important. We also desperately need better access to healthcare, mental health and addiction services. This is such a gross societal failure.

@@lacey892 Agreed, Australia is a little bit luckier than hospital visits are free, so homeless people do have the options to test their luck for treatment there. Giving people cash in general is risky but especially when homeless people have extremely high addiction rates.

When I was in 10th grade, we had a week-long excursion in Sydney to learn about the harsher realities of life, since we were sheltered rural kids from a private school. Amongst other things, we toured Kings Cross; historically known for addiction, homelessness, government housing, lockout laws, red light districts, and the famous "King hit". Our tour guide was a former addict and showed us everything from the methadone clinic, to the park a lot of homeless people sleep in, to the light-up memorial for underage gay prostitutes who were murdered in years past. We also visited a homeless shelter and got to talk to folks staying there as well as the owner, who used to be homeless himself. The most important things we learnt was that there's a myriad of reasons why people become homeless and that the best things we can do are treat them normally and help out when we can. For the week, we stayed in a youth hostel and were broken into groups of 4 or 5 that were given $100 per group. That $100 was all we had to feed our group for the whole week. My group budgeted ourselved well and, instead of blowing the rest on the last day, we decided to buy things like snack bars, tinned spaghetti, water bottles, and dog food and give them to homeless people. It speaks volumes about the impact that week had on us that a group of privileged kids decided to use their money on strangers.
