A big issue I have with this short film is how fatphobic it is on so many levels and the ableism as well. Ofc there’s the classic Shane level of fatshaming/& phobia in every piece of media he creates but him also trying to convince his love interest that she isn’t fat as if being fat is a bad thing doesn’t send a great message. Then also undermining the seriousness of ED’s is horrible. It’s also telling that the punchlines of the offensive jokes aren’t the stupidity of the characters making them, the punchline is the targets of the jokes. It’s one thing if the joke is that Gigi’s character is so cartoonishly mean and acts like a stereotypical bully in a 2000’s movie but that’s never the joke, it’s always “let’s point and laugh at this marginalized community”. It’s not only offensive, insensitive and telling of his views but also offensively unfunny. It’s almost impressive how bad of a comedian he is that his content isn’t even one of those things that are so bad that they’re funny. Jakes commentary makes it funny and entertaining though, I don’t know how I would’ve been able to watch awful content like this without a great commentator alongside it!

My whole job is costuming student productions, and even when there isn’t a dedicated production team there are dress rehearsals! Also, the fat suit prosthetics are truly awful. I’ve never seen good fat prosthetics on a face, I think it’s a mix of makeup designers and artists and directors not caring what fat people look like and it being very difficult to use any prosthetics around the jaw and cheeks and neck since that part of the face is so mobile and prosthetics are very very much not.
