My intentions are to give 100% to your company but I also intend to give the other company 100% to them." Surprisingly, even telling them, I received several offers. I told my first company about the new job at the second one, they were also "Just happy I'm not leaving, but if performance decreased then I'd have to decide what to do." My performance never decreased, they never noticed a difference and in fact I got a promotion. My second company was happy and they also promoted me within 6 months. I'm 100% remote (since 2020) but my 2nd "job" is caring for my kids. So while doing my job I do things for my kids instead of the idle work chatter. even go on breaks and go for walks. Sometimes I grab my laptop and go to the park...it's...amazing. I still do my job (probably better) AND I get to be with my kids/family. They could fire me for doing this because they do take some time away that I could -wasting time at my desk- working and in yesteryear plenty people had lost their job because they had family obligations. If you are still doing good work, it would be absolutely stupid for a company to fire you for greasing the wheels. It would be the ultimate "I own you" move and I wouldn't want to work anywhere that does that.
@michaelmurphy21122 жыл бұрын
There's a subtle difference between what you're doing and what's being done in the video (full disclosure, I do the same thing as you, so there might be some bias/justification). You're doing your one paying job and (probably) adjusting your location and/or hours as necessary to care for your children. You're doing the one job, but working with management (hopefully) to adjust your schedule. What it appears is happening in the video is he's simultaneously working two jobs, meaning, he "clocks in" for both at the same time and alternates tasks between them throughout the day, basically "stealing" from both companies. Now, I know there's some justification about being on-call while working for the other company, so assuming you can drop whatever you're doing and work for the other company at the drop of a hat, maybe. However most companies have a clause that doing this is cause for immediate termination. Now, if you're working one job in the morning and another one in the evening there's no issue, as they don't overlap.
@hallecute22 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmurphy2112 well it’s likely that he’s on salary, so as long as the work get dones the ‘clocking in’ doesn’t matter. It’s probably more project based so there would be no stealing of time lmao

Depending on the state he is in, he could be employed "at will". Meaning a company can terminate an employee at any time for pretty much "any" reason. One of the companies could pretty much just say "it's not working out, you're fired" and you would have to somehow prove they were firing you for something that is illegal on their end. As an older person in the workplace, I would always tell the new (younger) members of staff - Don’t sweat the small stuff. I had an example of where I sent an email from my bosses account to everyone in our data base - I was supposed to do that - I was not supposed to put a read receipt on it (I did this automatically without thinking). The minute I hit send I realised. Omg. I had the worst night possible. I made up all these stories in my head of how he was going to be so mad and I would get fired. Worst night possible. Came in the next morning. He walked past my desk, shook his head with a little smile, said you won’t do that again will you, and never mentioned it again. He literally had received 5000 read receipts on his phone from all over the world the entire night. The moral - worst case scenario rarely happens. my similar story... Worked at McDonalds for more years than I'd like to admit. While working there I persued an 9 month tech school... opening my own business...some temp jobs..etc. They all didn't pan out for one reason or another and I kept circling back to McD's. My motto was...never let go of a rung of that coorperate ladder until you're other hand is firmly grasped on the rung above the one you're at. I eventually got hooked up with a job in construction doing mostly painting. I worked this job from 7am to 3:30pm. Then I would start my McD's shift from 5pm to 11pm. I did this for A YEAR before I told my construction boss I was thinking of quitting McD's. I wanted reassurance from him that I had a future working with him before I quit. But he just sort of shrugged his shoulders and said "do what ya gotta do" Well I quit McD's and no more than a month later my construction boss more or less laid me off (just stopped calling me for work was the way he did it) Never told me that he was planning on retiring and just doing side work for freinds and family. So I went from working two jobs for an entire year to braving up and quitting one of them than instantly finding myself having neither job. Yeah... I suppose I could have gone back to McD's. They would have taken me. but I just couldn't do it...again. Eventually I kept hitting the classifieds and found a good medium between hard working labor and being under qualified for the white collar world. But my thing is this...holding on to a sucky job in fear of losing it because it's the best you've got didnt help me at all towards climbing that job ladder of success. Neither did working two jobs lol. But if you are a go getter and put yourself out there I think you'll find something...decent enough that can hopefully pay the rent.

It really depends though. I like that your boss didn't care at all because he's essentially doing it but not all companies are gonna be like that or bosses. Especially if you are put in a position to choose one company over another for non-compete purposes. In that case, there should be a precautionary step to ensure you work in totally different sectors and industries with your skill set as that will be the only way to really get around that. There are some that are just the devil where they only want you to work on their time and no one else's while on their clock and those are the companies to avoid like the plague since overemployment is very common and it's just gone digital in recent years.

What are some industries or companies you would recommend for this? Do you know anyone doing software sales remotely that found a way to balance the 2nd job and if so what was that industry/job?
@johnstonefield19352 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this is very odd and unusual. I wonder how much his channel/social media factor into this, if the companies are very small, and if Jake is doing something so hard to replace at both companies (which is foreseeable at old employer, less at new). Or maybe it's a area specific tech culture? Where I'm at no job would tolerate this, the "best" you would get if found out was a offer of a raise (and massively increased work) to quit the other. Even if they're 100% WFH and task/project work they would take this as meaning that they need to give you 2x the work you currently have. Especially if this information is cross team like this. Your boss MIGHT be cool with you just knocking out your work and doing whatever after, but now all the other team leaders will be talking about your team and your boss' boss will know. The team with "such a light load they can, and allow, their people to do the same entire job somewhere else at the same time". And your boss now has to defend you, and themselves, to their boss when they inevitably hear about it. Also nowadays almost every company has some kind of general "you MUST inform us if you make a single cent outside of here on anything" policies in place that would make firing you for this your fault, labeling it as a willful violation and conflict of interest/intellectual theft if they want to. I do think this kind of work culture and 99% of noncompetes are BS though, but that's the current reality.

Consider how healthy working relationship with your boss is at the job you currently have should influence whether or not you tell them you are picking up a second job. I've very rarely had to work in secret, and I've always been able to get said second job without retaliation and with them understanding. However, again, if your workplace is toxic, or has some of kind of rule against you working two jobs, prolly just keep it a secret. 2.) When you are interviewing for your 2nd job, you can use the fact that you are currently working one as evidence of your experience and work ethic. While some employers do get dissuaded by the potential conflict of interest, I have found that many are impressed with someone who is willing to work 2 jobs to better themselves, and are often pretty accommodating to make sure the two jobs don't conflict. However it isn't necessary to tell your second job that you have a primary one. Just make sure that you don't take the job without setting boundaries that allow you to make your first job. Prepare to come equipped with good white lies to back up your reasoning lmao

Unless you sign a noncompete, as long as your work isn't suffering or interfering there isn't much they could really say. Some management would be butthurt and fire you or ask you to quit the other job, but hopefully those managers like that are few and far between.

Yup, very true. It's more an unspoken rule or expectation that you're giving all your time and focus to the company.

The only thing that would change it is if you're hourly, and they claim wage theft because you're splitting some hours between the two jobs. Granted that's rare in dev/engineer land 👍

With the amount of over time I do every two weeks. I essentially work a second job. Lucky enough to have unlimited overtime for the last 2 years with no end in sight. Working remote has been the best thing for me.

I worked 2 jobs, and then 3 (long story). Would never tell any of the 3 employers that I had other jobs, because then they would forever be suspicious when I'm a few minutes late to a meeting or a little delayed responding to an email, etc.. Not worth the hassle, and not willing to risk finding out if any of my managers would be as cool as your was once they found out.

At one point in my life I worked 3 PT jobs and took college classes in between. None of them ever knew anything other than I was going to college. I used that to cover all sorts of deadlines. By Part Time I mean less than 40 hrs/week and no benefits. At one job I was pretty steady at 36hrs/week, another was 20-30 hrs a week and the third was all deliverables so I just made up what I thought that work was worth in terms of time. I did that for about 2 years and it took a toll but it kept food on the table and a roof over our heads until I had my degree. At another point in my life I took a full time salaried position while keeping my current position on a consult basis, there's a solid 6 month period where I was working both and getting paid full time for both and neither party cared as long I could deliver. The long and short of it is, as long as you get the thing your being paid for done no one cares. If your falling behind in either job you are not being fair to your employer and you shouldn't be double dipping. My grand plan for retirement is to retire where I am now, take on a new job (at nearly 2x the pay), and return to work at my place of retirement (remotely) until I decide I need to actually retire.

My girlfriend at 18 worked 3 Jobs. She was always open about her other jobs and employers loved her drive and she was able to keep that up for years until burnout happened.
