I first met your dad a s a kid at a QMS concert in NJ. Stayed inn touch and he eventually played on two of my albums and played live with me at the Whisky A GoGo. Duncan was so cool and an amazing guitar player. One of the most underrated in rock history.

Your father was one of a kind. He was a real musician. Listen to his guitar interplay on Calvary and Maiden of the Cancer Moon. Wow... he played guitar like a flamethrower.. but you know that. I saw him at a lot of shows and then when he put a group together in the late '90.

I am 72 and I agree with you. So glad to know I am not alone after all these years.....I listen to Happy Trails ALL THE TIME. I still have my original vinyl album, and about 5 copies of the CD. Wore out that old 8 track. Use to drive from Florida to New York when I was in college. I would put Happy Trails on and drive about 12 hours listening to it continuously (cause that is what 8 track did). It is ingrained into my brain cells.

Spirit was terrific too. 12 Dreams had a variety of individualistic and original songs. Clean, clear sounds on those records, everyone in tune. I liked all the popular bands from California in those days but some sound muddy compared to Spirit. Randy California! I only listen to Qucksilver these days and sometimes Everybody Knows this is Nowhere (Neil of course)

A Quicksilver fan forever. I saw them with War at the Filmore East in 1971, what a great show. Last saw a later incarnation of them in 2006 with Jefferson Starship. Gary Duncan was still killing it. RIP to John, Dino, Gary and Nicky. Nothing today comes close to this music.

You are very lucky. I saw them at the Hollywood Sport-atorium in Florida (I think that was it) back around 1972 or 3. Would give my left arm to have seen them do Happy Trails at the Fillmore when they recorded that album. Was, and still is, my favorite of all time.

Quicksilver was my favorite band, and John cippolena was my hero. I saw them every chance I got but there was a limiting factor: I was young, and I lived in berkeley. In 1968. I bought their 1st album and I was 13. I had been rocking out in golden gate park and the Haight Ashbury for about 3-4 years at that point and getting high all the time and selling weed. I appreciate this footage because it takes me back to a really happy time in my life, what would color the rest of my life for all time, and I wouldn't change a thing even if I could. From this time on I would be engaged in the protests in berkeley as my awareness of the world around us grew. Thank you quicksilver, and John cippolena ( and Gary) for the gift of a lifetime in helping me to see the light. I love you still.

As a kid I lived in Los Altos and at one point Los Altos High School was going to have a concert with QMS and Santana. I was excited about QMS, had never heard of Santana. I still rate the former as way more fun to listen to. I agree - hard to understand how they never broke out. 50 years later I'm astounded that they're even better than I remember.

I loved Quick Silver Messenger Service! The singer was awesome and the band was so good. Discovered them in 1969 at the age of 18. "What You Gonna Do About Me?" was appropriate in the 70's and 2020 that found this country in civil unrest, politically divided, violence and the historical pandemic raging on. This song is the backdrop for videos of this era. History does repeat itself as man cannot solve the problems on earth.

I'm 74 yrs old. In the-late 60's I spent practically every weekend at a concert hall in SF. Big Brother and Quicksilver were my favorites. Quicksilver never got the props because their records never showed just how good they were. A real shame.

Does the Longshoreman's Hall and Avalon Ballroom ring a bell? When I was 13, I'd catch a bus from Oakland to dance to the music at those venues and also go to GGP for the free concerts. Unlike Big Brother, Quicksilver was really tight.

I’m so lucky to have grown up seeing Quicksilver constantly as a teenager!! They were one of the best bands I’ve had the pleasure of seeing, John, Dino, Gary & Nikki were fantastic. Oh the happy memories they take me back to. I had just relocated to the Bay Area in 1975, at 20. I saw them at the Swing Auditorium all the time, the Swing burned in the 1980’s, but it was such a great concert venue.

Wade Older They were way ahead. I heard them in '68 and they still sound great. Later 2 of my girlfriends were with Cippolina & Freiburg if I spelled that right. It's a small world. I loved Winterland except for where I parked. Once I saw Malo there. I turned around in the crowd and by me were Malo's leadman's brother & father...Carlos Santana & his Dad. Cool. Loved the Old Filmore too with the little rooms upstairs. I never understood why Quicksilver Messenger Service didn't become as big as the Dead or the Airplane. And there was another San Fran band called Osiola and they were so excellent but only San Francisco seemed to know them. I love the special music sound of San Francisco musicians. Mix it with the Tulsa Sound (Cale, Russell, Clapton's old long-term band, Elvin Bishop, Steve Pryor) and your got some music to go to the moon! It's too cool to get Tulsa & SanFrancisco bands mixed up jamming!

I thought I was listening to one thing and then the whole thing shifted into something else. Great days. Nothing not one thing today is even close.

As to your question as to why QMS didn't make it as big as the Dead or Airplane, think I might have an explanation. Gary Duncan once commented that so long as we made enough for "pot" and food, we were happy. The Airplane were always very business minded, they and The Who demanded to be paid at Woodstock before they went on. And The Dead, despite being just as "crazy" as QMS, seemed to just keep getting better and to be able to change with the times. "Workingman's Dead" was a marked departure from "Live/Dead" but demonstrated a remarkable ability to write very concise, musical songs along with the "psychedelic jams". That kept them in good stead as the years passed and tastes changed.

One the Great All Time and Top 5 of My Progressives Rock! Moody Blues, Doors, etc. I saw them Twice in Concert! The first time I ever heard of them I saw them at the World in Miami Florida and the second time at the Fillmore in San Francisco! As I was there I was Talking to a Black Man many minutes during the Concert about Quicksilver and I asked his Name! He said his Name was Howling Wolf! The Great Blues Singer! It blew My Mind! I listened to his Music a lot over the years as he was one of my Favorite Blues Singers! Small World isn’t it!

I'm not sure people realize the historical importance of this footage but I invite any and all comments. Quicksilver made it's name from '66-'68 with the tandem guitar wizardry of Gary Duncan and much missed John Cippolina. Gary decided to leave the band (I have heard many explanations) and they released the legendary Happy Trails in 1969. The band foundered for a bit but John struck up a great friendship with the legendary keyboard genius Nicky Hopkins. The resulting LP, Shady Grove is a marked departure from Happy Trails but I think quite inspired. I have often called it Nicky's greatest solo LP with the remaining members of Quicksilver as backing musicians. Not long after Gary returned along with Dino Valente. I saw them at the Fillmore East in April 1970 and they were quite good, they benefited from Dino's songwriting skills but I found them a bit "top heavy". They recorded the two "Hawaiian" LP's but Dino's personality was abrasive from the start. First to go was Nicky and John followed shortly thereafter in 1970. John gigged briefly with Copperhead and a Welsh band, Man. Gary soldiered on with Dino Valente to do a couple of lack luster LP's. I don't believe Gary and John ever played together again until they tried a reunion in 1975, and I believe this footage, is the result. There are lots of "tapes" from the early years but any footage of them playing together is almost nonexistent - until this. And what exists is very brief and not terribly noteworthy. This is remarkably good if you can get past Dino's posturing. And Greg Elmore is a much better drummer than I realized. I listened to today's processed music and it's so sad.

I understand he was just that kind of man, always willing to chat about his playing and share any "chop" he had. A truly cool dude and missed. And yes, Gary is still gigging. It was "Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder" from Shady Grove that caused my father to have an epiphany and change his total attitude toward the music of my generation - he was a piano player.

Another truly distinctive thing about Cippolina was his playing with multiple finger picks. Which allowed him to play such intense power chords. Plucking the strings simultaneously rather than in succession, up or down across them. An amazing example is on 'Its Been Too Long'. He picks lead & plucks chords the entire song. And then there is 'The Fool'. Virtuoso

@@eastwest42286 oh come on. The Duncanites can always be counted on to weigh in. Duncan was an extremely gifted purveyor of standard blues guitar. Cipollina was unique. You say he was "solid". That's outrageous. Brother, there was no one before or since like him. You couldn't pick Duncan out of an audio line up. Cipollinas style is instantly recognized by EVERYONE. There is a reason Cip is a historical figure and Duncan a footnote.

67 years old,got into this group in the mid 60s,Who Do You Love totally knocked me out! None of my buddies knew about them. Deepest regrets I never saw them live. Imagine 3 guitar players of that caliber in one group. Cipolino was amazing.

I remember hearing these guys doing some really cool stuff like "What About Me" & "Cowboy On the Run" BITD, and the bands like QMS paved the way by going back to what's happnin'; "They Don't Know" is so American West at that top of the first hill run down the far side organ guitar vocal interplay between Felix and Gary & Cippolina. They always seemed to be on hand for all of the free concerts in Golden Gate Park. They had the right mindset. A couple of them played at the free Surrealist Solstice Jam at the park in 2017 celebrating 50 year anniversary of the Summer of Love.

Brilliant origional band. bought their double live album in the 80's and managed to get all their albums from then on. My favourite is the first lp. I was born in 65 and was a teenager during the vacous era of music this band was my pathway back to the San Francisco music from the Dead airplane real music and an era with a spirital sense we have lost in this plastic digital age where a sense of community has been lost ✌

Being an upper New York state resident back in the 1960's and thru 1977 never got a chance to see this band live yet was the only teenager in my social group that ever bought any of their recordings. First recording I purchased as LP back in 1970's was Just for Love, also recall buying their Shady Grove LP when I was on vacation in L.A. at Tower Records on Sunset Blvd. back around 1970. Always liked this band's music, one of the best U.S. rock bands from the 1960's and 1970's. Loved the LP album cover of Shady Grove, created by Globe Propaganda, who also created the LP cover for It's A Beautiful Day's first LP release. Was personally into career art training back then for Commercial and Fine Arts, that LP cover was inspirational as creativity.
