In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the release of the landmark Grateful Dead album 'Terrapin Station,' JamBase presents the 'Inspiration: Celebrating 40 Years Of Terrapin Station' video series featuring covers of each of the songs originally issued on July 27, 1977. For the “Terrapin Station Medley” several of our favorite artists recorded the seven parts of the suite at various locations, which were pieced together into a single seamless performance. The video features Railroad Earth, moe., Stanley Jordan, Strangefolk, Moonalice, The Mountain Goats, Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz, Jake Peavy, Holly Bowling, Poor Man’s Whiskey, Grahame Lesh & Kirby Lee Hammel, Eric DiBerardino and others.
Watch their collaborative performance of the album closing opus.
Video recorded and edited by: Jake Alexander
HSMF Playshop footage recorded and edited by: Teton Film Works
Intro music by: Holly Bowling
Outro music by: Grahame Lesh & Kirby Lee Hammel

The chick on the piano is freaking brilliant. The main criticism of the album, as I recall, was that section, all with a symphony orchestra. She does the whole thing herself, and far better than the original. Yea, I am on the bus with Holly Bowling.

I knew Jerry from the old days at the Dead House where Everybody was welcomed and Everything was shared! After Reagan ran all the people out of the Haight with the National Guard,I would run into him from time to time around the Bay area. And I would end up riding around with him in his Mercedes. "Jerry, why are we riding around like this and not going anywhere?" Jerry said, I have to do it like this because wherever I go people recognize me and a crowd gathers around me. Why are thousands of people following me around from all over the country? I don't get it I can't understand it! Why me? And he would shake his head. Maybe the answer is we are all going to Terrapine Station Jerry! Jerry, I love you and all the Dead Heads! This Vibe is Eternal ! It will never ever die!

That is Holly Bowling. Yes, she is incredible! 13:32 Totally appropriate the the San Rafael-Richmond Bridge is in the background of her segment. That is the bridge Jerry was driving across during a thunderstorm when he was hit with a bolt of inspiration for the song--he turned around and went home to start writing it down. At the very same moment Hunter was at home in SF when he was hit by a bolt of inspiration and he began to write down the lyrics.

He is amazing with one hand on the guitar! Holly Bowling, of course, is amazing. I love the different settings, from Jake Peavey's flat (presumably) to the sets at the music festival to, of course, Ms. Bowling outside! Her recent videos from Tahoe, etc. are striking. Plus STUUU and Lebo with a Townsendesque flourish to end the jam. Very nice work by all involved. Thanks again for doing this wonderful tribute.

Weir has rest knowing that other musicians would cease to replicate the dead in this fashion. Listen and appreciate is a solid idea. Mayer playing along, but not re-creating, is also a solid idea accepted by an original member, Bob. Please stop trying to replicate. Yes, other musicians have the chance to play with the remaining members, those musicians/artists have been allowed. Again, representation in the form of various covers joined together is a much transient sound. Example: A various number of painters get together with brushes and paints to re-create a timeless painting. My friend.. leave the timeless painting alone.

I honestly think that this medley is really outstanding, particularly the sections by: Railroad Earth, Strangefolk, Poor Man’s Whiskey Lebo, but Holly Bowling’s piano work is just ethereal. Am I a Deadhead? No, but I am an aficionado of prog- particularly the “holy trinity” of prog (Rush, Yes and The Moody Blues) and Wobbler.
