Biochemist and author Jessie Inchauspe (Aka - the Glucose Goddess) joins Jameela to talk about the many ways glucose affects your body. They define what glucose is and its function in the body, how glucose spikes can affect everything from mood to diabetes to PCOS, "glucose hacks" you can utilize to keep your spikes at a minimum, how we can empower people with their own bodies, and more.
⚠️TRIGGER WARNING!! Mentions of food & sugar & glucose, and how, if not regulated for some people, it can negatively impact their long-term health as regards inflammation or insulin resistance or diabetes or PCOS or cognitive function, and hormonal balance. If you are in any kind of ED recovery & it’s really hard to hear anything about food or nutrition or to even have to think about it at all, or feel that you can easily be triggered back down a slippery slope of any kind of disordered eating or restriction orthorexia, that is absolutely not what we’re trying to achieve with this episode. And so if you think you might be vulnerable right now, please turn it off! ⚠️

I'm 71. A year ago I was told that I had entered the pre diabetic stage. As all of my siblings are diabetic I was determined to change this. After a lot of research I came across Jessie and it has made all the difference. I've dropped 3 dress sizes without any problem. All I have done is follow the hacks. I haven't really changed what or how much I eat. In addition my rheumatoid arthritis is SO MUCH better than it was. This really is transformative.

What’s really interesting is that I’m diabetic, though I’m pretty sure I’m in remission at this point. I won’t know until I get my a1c tested again. I’ve never heard of Jessie Inchauspé until I first heard this discussion a few weeks ago, but pretty much everything she talks about doing I’ve been doing pretty much since I was diagnosed. No one ever recommended these habits to me, I just did them on my own because they just made sense and they seemed to be working. Also, another thing I have found that is good for regulating blood sugar levels is dark chocolate. Preferably something that doesn’t contain a lot of sugar. I’ve found a brand that is diabetic friendly and is sweetened with Jackfruit. I prefer the mint flavored because it tastes like a Junior Mint or a peppermint patty 😋

Fantastic content (as usual)! I'm an ancient 55 as of last week and have changed up my eating to suit my health in the last 7 months. And one of the big things that helped was the savory breakfast! I have chicken or turkey with pinto or black beans (plain) and some green beans. Some days when I have neglected breakfast pre-prep, I'll just do a bowl of my Kashi cereal... and I notice a huge difference in my energy for the day. I've reserved my cereal most days to an after dinner dessert if I'm craving a little sweet thing (and I have 1/4 to 1/2 the normal serving size). And I didn't realize I was doing another hack and my activity is usually an hour after I eat. I have been plagued with mobility health issues these past 2.5 years (thank you pandemic) and was told my nerve issues are probably because I'm fat (sigh). So I decided I will switch my eating, eat properly balanced food in a calorie deficit, so that if my mobility issues are permanent that I will give my body the best chance of dealing with any hardships it will face (like surgery or just falling down in the street and wishing to be left for dead because I'm too embarrassed to try to get up). This was a huge mental health shift for me over the past year. I've had to give up so much stuff because of my mobility issues (I don't own a car and walking has been my mode of transport for 5.5 years) that I was becoming quite depressed. I actually had cut out way too many carbs (accidentally listened to a keto fan) and once I added them back in I felt great, I could think much more clearly, and I wanted to move my body... but walking has been difficult... and I discovered rebounders/mini trampoline (with old lady grab bar for safety)... and I love love love it! Like a kid bouncing and running on it. Sorry for the novel, but so much of what you talked about here resonated with me, gave me some new tips/hacks, and also maybe this old gal can give hope that it is never too late to listen to your body! Off to follow Jessie on IG, now!!

Around min 17 they talk about insulin resistance and how unfair fat people are being treated. I am one of those fat women. I tried for years to lose weight, via exercising more and eating healthier. But I didnt drop one pound. Now I know why !

I’m so disappointed this episode got uploaded to KZbin even after the well-deserved backlash on Instagram. What your guest is saying is misinformation and quite frankly dangerous. You talk passionately about the toxicity of diet culture, beauty standards and ableism etc. yet this is the guest and message you platform on your podcast? Someone telling people what and when to eat to ”control” actual illnesses?? Without being a doctor or nutrinionist themself??? Hard pass. Edit: Just saw your trigger warning in the description. This is not only about EDs. Most of what she presents as facts ”based on studies” is not backed up by actual experts in the field of medicine and nutrition!!

No. Regulating your glucose is the key to good health. Her facts are based on actual studies. She is an expert. If you don't like it, eat all the sugar and see what happens. You have been warned.
