Gunsmoke. We watched it as kids. Still watching it as Seniors n as grandparents
@Zwei48153 жыл бұрын
Seniors tend to find themselves watching more and more television as they get older and find themselves less willing or able to do other things. They also have a tendency to reject watching new and unfamiliar television programming because the shows of their childhoods are much more comfortable and familiar, even if it's something they've seen dozens of times.

Two of my favorite scenes were from the old black and white episodes. The first one was with Matt and Doc sitting outside the jail when Chester walks up with a paper note and says "Here's a message for you Mr. Dillon"; then Doc says to Chester "well, you'd better sit down and rest; you've done your days work"; then Chester says "why aint you operating on someone; are your hands too shaky?" and Doc replies "I'm surprised you'd say something like that...I was about to buy you a beer!" Then Chester just stood there looking lost. It was great smart-ass remarks that real friends would say to each other. The second one was With Matt sitting outside again when Doc walks up to him. Matt said " Hello Doc, looks like you're gonna be real busy today". Doc says "really? Why is that?" Matt says "just the law of averages. You didn't do anything at all yesterday". .Doc just stands there in stunned silence. These two scenes made me laugh out-loud. The wise cracking banter between these characters seemed so normal that it could have been ad-libbed.

It cracks me up when a criminal is lying to Matt Dillon and instead of tipping his hand and calling him a liar before he can prove it, Matts' only response is to just stand there and say Ummm humm. Most people use that response to agree with the person they are talking with, but Matt Dillon NEVER uses it that way. He never says umm, humm, to agree with what he has just been told. Viewers always know that and most of the liars probably knew it too. This is probably one of my favorite lines that is frequently repeated in Gunsmoke and I sometimes wonder if this is something James Arness just started doing or was that written into the scripts (?) It drives my wife crazy when I do this to her which always give me a little chuckle. WRZ 2021-07-10

I love it too, and though I really have no idea if it originated with the writers, or with JA, himself, my guess would be that JA came up with it in his efforts to make Matt less "wordy". It was a brilliant touch, though, whoever came up with it!
