Gupta He's the most underrated Republican. Not the most underrated overall in my opinion. Polk is more underrated to me because he got EVERYTHING on his major agenda done in one term. He's one of the most successful presidents we've ever had, and it's a shame he isn't as well known as Lincoln, Washington, Roosevelt, etc.

Man he crushed it!! Not only did he do everything he said he would... his expansion of the US was critical... critical. Without it the nation would never have been a global superpower. All in one term. Legend. Fave from now on. 100%

It's just really upsetting that land came at him intentionally picking a fight with Mexico and blaming them for the attack while on the other literally commiting a 2nd trail of tears with manifest destiny not to mention being a warmonger with the Mexican war... It's good to look at success but it's important to study the effects it had on other groups of people and to study fully what had all happened in these times

The map at 1:28 suggests that the land immediately to the west of the Mississippi River was acquired during Polk's presidency.
@unadin45837 жыл бұрын
I think you mean the map at 0:54. That's a very poor graphic. As you pointed out, the land west of the Mississippi was already part of America. It came from the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. It should not be colored white but the same as the eastern part of the country.

Hmmm, "to get _exclusive_ rights to the Oregon Territory " The problem with that statement is it suggests that the Oregon Treaty of 1846 ceded all of the land jointly administered by the USA and British interests to the USA. . From a Whig point of view, the USA lost all rights to Vancouver's Island, New Caledonia, and the Columbia District of the Hudson Bay Company. There was no entity named "Oregon Territory" until more than two years after the signing of treaty, though one could argue that the word exclusive does apply ... to the portion of Oregon below 49°, excluding the Island of Vancouver.
@eunaekim92163 жыл бұрын
He would have liked to get the entire Oregon territory up to 54 40, but he didn't want to start a war with Britain like he did with Mexico, so he agreed to a compromise! This must have taken great mental strength!

@D3KA1236 Жыл бұрын
@arceisra9267hahahaha you're wrong Either you're an American or you didn't pay attention to your history classes at school. Mexico did not send the USA, Mexico was under the mandate of President Santa Ana, who had an ambition to have all of Mexico controlled. He was a dictator so to speak. When Polk was elected president, he promised your country more territory unless it had 2 coasts and he achievement invading the capital of mexico the city of mexico where they raised your flag but it was removed when zachary taylor and jose joaquin de herrera signed the annexation of california, new mexico to the usa so polk promised his promise to the american people
@jamesflynn8443 Жыл бұрын
When Texas was Mexico the Mexican government outlawed slavery. Illegal aliens poured across the borders from the US and its territories against Mexican law. Eventually the illegals (supporters of slavery, I might add) fought and broke away forming the Republic of Texas but the votes were stacked with the illegal immigrants who poured into Mexico's territory and forced the issue and legalized slavery in the Republic. Minus slavery as an issue it was kind of like what illegal aliens from the continental US did to Hawaii. Overwhelm the legal population and then outvote them. Polk just took land in the name of God's gift of manifest destiny. In many cases it was a shameful action which provoked or stoked historical problems in order to take land. Of course men like Lincoln were embarrassed by Polk and his actions. My history professor used to say that there was a reason why the full history of Polk's presidency is even now swept under the rug unless you really study about him. People would rather forget about what he did. It would be called imperialism if it happened today.
